You may have heard I lost hearing in my right ear a couple months ago. A blood vessel burst (that is a rare ocurrence). It can't be repaired.

I had my hearing test to confirm the hearing loss, and immediately saw an ear, nose & throat specialist. I got the new hearing aids two weeks later.
I'm celebrating with beer and pizza.

What a way to celebrate April Fool's Day, with some real good news.

I have worn my hearing aids for about ten years. I had a natural slow loss of my hearing. It has stopped, but I need hearing aids in both ears to hear well. After I got used to them they work well. It took me some time to get used to them. But, I am lucky that I can correct my problem and not have to live with poor hearing. Good luck with yours...it is not easy to get used to them, I think

That's cool! I need to see about my hearing. One ear hears less than the other quite a bit. Did the hearing aids cost you a lot?

I have some good medical coverage due to my being a senior, etc. Everything was free. We got the best they had to offer. The hearing aids work together with my iPhone. I can answer the phone using bluetooth and the hearing aids.

I have 95% hearing in my left ear. The right ear is totally gone. No hearing. The right ear has a microphone that sends sound to the left ear.

I'm winding down my day now. I had a beer and some chicken wings. I'll get more exposure time tomorrow. I will likely go and visit some friends.

After 46 years in the industrial field, mostly wearing hearing protection and other PPE,
have some limited hearing loss. I pay attention to background noises and correct it if
possible accordingly. Background noise interacts with spoken words sometimes.
I don't need a hearing aid yet, I pay attention closely to what's being said, trying
to limit the background noise or wait till it goes away. Few things have to decided
in the next few seconds is the thought! Mostly I can hear a comment across the room
at normal volumes. I turn down the volume, whatever, if there are important facts
to be considered, ideas, that sort of thing.

My brother-in-law has been fitted with new hearing aids. I asked my sister how it is going with him, and she said he refuses to wear them. What a waste of money, they cost him $3 thousand dollars. I think vanity comes into it with some people.
$3,000? For both ears or per aid?

If I were your sister I would start whispering with my back to him to encourage him to put the aids in. I'd point to my own ears when he complained about not getting the message. Might throw in the occasional shoulder shrug.

I'm not sure about vanity. With some older men it can just be antagonistic stubbornness.

We tried to install an app on my iPhone while at the doctor's office. My iPhone refused to work with the data connection.

I installed it when I got home. So far I like the hearing aids. I still need to spend an entire day getting used to them.

A close friend suffered an abrupt hearing loss like that. Total loss in one ear and partial in the other. He was in his early 60s and opted to get a cochlear implant. I found his experience to be very interesting.

The surgery to install the implant went smoothly, but I was surprised to learn that was just the beginning. For the next couple of years he was "learning to hear" again . . . training his brain to interpret the signals from the implant into sound. He was given "exercises" to do and there were a lot of visits to the ENT for adjustments.

In the end, he was very pleased with the result but it took a lot of effort.

Today is the start of my first full day with the hearing aids. The sound has actually improved over yesterday.

Yesterday everything sounded like it was coming from a cheap speaker. I appreciated the increased hearing ability. But I was worried about dealing with such cheap, tinny sound.

Today, all sounds are vibrant, and real. Fantastic. I'm thinking the hearing aids were not fully charged when I got them. I put them in the charger when I went to bed. I will charge them every night.

Ron, judging from your picture we are about the same age. I have worn my hearing aids for a few years. My advice it don't waste time "getting used to them"! Put them on and wear them except in bed, unless you need them to hear the TV or Radio. So many of us try to 'slip into' getting used to them. It really isn't the aid in your ear that you are getting used to, it is being able to hear properly again. And the only way to get used to that is wear them, all the time. I speak from experience; it only took me two or three days to wear I forgot I had them in...

Once you do this you will be amazed how much you are missing out on...go for it!

Oh believe me, I wear them all the time.... except of course when sleeping, or taking a shower, etc.

Warrigal: $3,000 for the pair. You're right about stubbornness.
