I have great news about my diabetes

You might remember that I was diagnosed with Diabetes back around May of this year. I've made excellent progress in that regard. I had my A1C checked a couple months ago. It was 5! My doctor was pleasantly surprised. He asked what my secret was. It's very simple. I just stopped eating all the excess sweets. I do eat desert at lunch. The doctor cut my insulin dosage in half. I'm happy it was so easy for me. I just can't handle counting carbs and stuff.

that is terrific, but I am a bit confused. My A1C has hovered between 5.9 - 6.2 for the past few years. I have it checked every 6 months and my doctor says I am pre-Diabetic since the A1C is between 5.7-6.4. My level dropped to 5.5 at my last test and the Doctor said I was no longer pre-Diabetic. If your level dropped to 5, why are you still taking insulin? A 5 would indicate you were not diabetic. Is the continued insulin at any level being used for other conditions? The only change I made that must have been significant, I stopped drinking any diet colas or using artificial sweeteners. The rest of my diet and activity levels remained the same. Go figure!!

I barely understand the principles involved with the A1C reading. The Doctor was amazed at my results, and said I might not really have Diabetes. But he went ahead and reduced the insulin by half. I will see him again in December. I really want to stress the fact that I didn't do much to achieve this "condition." I just cut out all the sugar crap.

In the months before my hospitalization I was spending around $200 a month on "crap," including 3 pounds of jelly beans, large boxes of candy bars etc. I was binging junk food. That drove my blood sugar levels up to 615! So maybe that was a temporary thing, caused by the binging?!

Sounds great !!

It still amazes me that just what ? .... 10 or so years ago we almost never heard of/about diabetes . Now .... that's all we hear . Pardon my skepticism .... but I think someone found a cash cow.

Yes, they tell me i have it ... last A1C 6.5

Have ya noticed ? Much of the time in the case of many health problems , the answer to 'treating' them / controling them are simply to give up what we enjoy. Sweets, alcohol, caffine, fats , red meat , tobacco , white potatos , etc & so on.
In other words .... stop enjoying much of what we actually enjoy and we will live longer .

If I need to give up that much ... ? Do I want to live all that long ?

I agree, I am confused as well. I take tradjenta for my diabetes and walk 7 miles a day to keep my A1C in check. Last test was 6.7. I get insulin only when in the hospital. I am surprised you are still taking insulin and not a different drug for maintenance

I agree, and don’t forget salt. Course since we can’t have potatoes we don’t need salt. 🥹

Diabetes has been a part of my family medical history. One brother died in his 30s from Diabetes (back around 1987). The other brother is grossly obese, and doesn't take care of himself. He's in a nursing home, bed-bound.

Sounds great !!

Interesting. I've known diabetics all my life. Neighbors, coworkers, you name it.

I do think the numbers have gone up in recent decades
though, because of changes in eating habits and perhaps food quality.

"They" are nuts. Many experts in the field will not consider someone over 60 diabetic even with an A1c of 7.0.
But, as you said, that would spoil the cash cow.

You have a choice. Getting rid of tobacco might not prevent your inevitable death, if you've been using for a long time, but at least your breath will be better. Everything else; in moderation...portion control.

Yeah, they told me I was prediabetic
I think it was 5 something
I asked who wasn't 'prediabetic'
The doc got a bit snippy after that

That was eight years ago
Since then, every checkup has been in the 'normal' slot

Don't get me started on the medical profession
