I Just got a Scary Message On My Phone

Lara

Friend of the Arts
I was in the midst of texting when all of a sudden, I didn't type it, but added to my text came "00 hello hello What are you doing with all my alarms". I deleted it. I thought maybe I inadvertently typed a 00 and that maybe that's some kind of code...so I typed 00 to see what would happen. Nothing happened.

Now I'm a little scared. It's kinda' creepy. It's giving me the heebie jeebies.

Lara, could it be something to do with alarm settings on your phone?

You may have gotten a cosmic signal of impending doomsday !
Thx KingsX, I feel so much better now

I don't have my alarm set for anything right now, but I just talked to my daughter who is more techie than I and she suggested that maybe I have my "Dictation" on? So if it hears some kind of shuffle in the background noise it makes the words that it thinks you're saying?

She doesn't have that on her phone and I have no idea if I have it on my phone. But I only have an iPhone5 so I doubt it.

But here's the thing about that...my 2 dogs were having their rowdy play time which is very noisy when they get into it, and my beagle barked his deep loud barks a few times. Maybe that triggered it?

That’s spooky Lara. I’ve recently been online and have had someone suddenly call me with a notice to view the caller. Of course I didn’t answer but I am forever trying to figure out how it happened so can relate. It’s spooky.

Do you have any apps on your phone that require microphone access? (when you install an app, it has that list of things it "needs", like contacts, wifi info, etc.) If yes, then you're audio can be picked up.
Sounds like it was a phishing thing, so wouldn't worry too much but would check the message history to see if anything unusual there.
And wouldn't hurt to let your internet service provider know about it.

One guess is that something you typed inadvertently was a text address to someone who has set their phone to set off an alarm when they receive texts. Did you actually get to "send"? Or inadvertently did send in the middle of your messaging? The "00" I understand is text language for being surprised.

I hadn't sent the message yet. I was right in the middle of texting my daughter and all of a sudden it appeared as though I typed it but I didn't.

And I wasn't texting her anything alarming. She had sent me a photo of a pretty painting she got from a garage sale. I texted, "Oh wow, it's awesome. It's a little like folk art. Very well done." Then the scary text appeared already typed in full, "00 hello hello What are you doing with my alarms?". Scared the life out of me.

I didn't know that 00 is text language for being surprised.

I do have a microphone in my phone. Sometimes I use it instead of typing a text but check my previous post for what I texted. It wasn't alarming at all. I don't know if the microphone in my phone was on at the time or not. I can't remember now but I think I was texting manually.

When you say "check message history", do you mean scroll back and read previous messages? There's nothing alarming there if that's what you meant. I'll call my internet provider. Good idea. Gmail, a week ago, alerted me to someone getting my password for my email account. I never called them. I just changed my password. Something's up....maybe.

Maybe somebody checking a new kind of advertising, if they
get an answer from anybody, they know that it works and will
then probably sell the software.

Were you using an "Instant Messaging" service/app or an MSM?
If MSM, then you couldn't answer anyway.

Don't worry about it Lara, words on a screen won't hurt you,
the troubles will start if you answer though.

Mike

Some time it could be Spell Check. It thinks it knows what you want to say and if you hit the wrong key it will enter it!!
I will try an example below..

Oo the same time I don't have to work tomorrow and I will see what I can do for you today or commute to work with the team.

The above was entered by just tapping the next word that came up..

Thank you Mike, Ken and beneDictus. I don't use Instant Messaging (I don't know what that is, I just send Messages on my phone). I only have typical Apps everybody has except my daughter added "Shazam" which is an App that when you hold your phone up to the radio station in the car it will tell you the name of the song and artist singing it. What is an MSM, Mike? I thought that was MainStreamMedia. I know, I'm pathetic

I never use the internet from my phone except GPS. Actually GPS is an issue. When Gmail alerted me a week ago that someone accessed my gmail account, they said it was in a town I had driven through the day before about an hour from home. I had not used my computer in that town or even gotten out of the car, but I had used GPS on my phone. Gmail also alerted me that someone with a new Apple phone from Atlanta GA (Im in NC) tried to access my account and Gmail asked if it was me. Of course I said no and changed my password.

I need to make some calls to gmail and apple.

That is really scary, Lara. I use my GPS in the car all the time. So that means that some hacker is able to always know exactly where I am?

Good question Lara, I got the initials the wrong way round, but MSM is Methylsulfonylmethane
something to help joints I think.

I should have said MMS, which is Multimedia Messaging Service.

Mike.

TY Mike. Yes, Sunny. There is a way to turn off "Tracking" in your settings but I did that. I think I must have turned it back on because I don't think GPS works when tracking is off.

Not to worry. This is the latest type of scam going on. Somehow they got a hold of my cell phone number and sent me a text to call a number which I am not familiar with.

Of course I didn't. I took the phone to my provider and showed them. I have now blocked all calls that I do have a contact with.

If you go on the internet there are all kinds of stuff.

I even had the ransom virus where they claim they are the FBI and lock your computer. FBI logo and all. They even access your camera and show you your room.

Some people pay to have their computer unlocked but of course they just take the money.

Fortunately I knew how to get rid of it without paying anything. I wouldn't pay those crooks .

If you are really worried you should record all your contacts and change your phone number. I'm assuming that's on your cell phone?

My provider charges $25 to change the phone number but I complained that i was going to change providers so they didn't charge me. I claimed it was their fault for allowing access to my cell phone.

.

Can anyone explain this ?

For years, sometimes when I have the radio on in my car, it goes all static as soon as I drive into the garage. On the days when this happens, I've tested it by repeatedly driving in and out of my garage. It's fine outside by all static inside. But that only happens sometimes, not every day. My garage is attached to my house and this never happens to the radios in my house.

A couple of months ago, I left my charged up cell phone in the car overnight the garage. I remembered it late that night but thought since the temperature outside was cool, the phone would be okay. The next day the battery was totally drained... that has never happened ever, even when the phone is left in the car parked outside for many hours in extreme cold or heat. It has only happened once, the one time I left it overnight in the garage.

Lara, please do put your spectacles on.......that text was from me and it read "0ooh, hello hello. What are you doing with my old arms". I was waiting for the answer, "Put your left hand in my right hand, your right hand around my waist, put a rose between your teeth and let's tango"............but that's OK, I get knocked back regularly.....ha ha ha

Seriously though (if that's possible for me), that text sounds spooky, I hope you work it out.

Cryptic emergency alert panics Oregon city's residents

May 30, 2018

" SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Oregon's emergency alert systems blasted a cryptic alert to cellphones around the capital city, panicking residents by telling them simply "Civil Emergency" and "Prepare for Action" and leaving off that the threat was toxic algae at a local water supply.

Officials wanted to warn Salem-area residents Tuesday night that elevated levels of a natural toxin caused by the algae bloom had made area tap water unsafe for children and people with compromised immune systems. But that information got cut off, and a more ominous-sounding default message went out in its place, said Andrew Phelps, head of the state emergency management agency."
