I just won the lottery, what should I do?

How many of you play?

It would turn our lives upside down if we won big.

Your thoughts?
It would turn almost everybody life around. Minimally, it would change life's path.
I play maybe $20/yr.
I see no great detriment in people playing realistically and with an expectation of a $1 thrill at 7:59pm, PT.

I would move to another state and change my name. I would hire a financial advisor, a lawyer, and a CPA. Given that I had enough money, I'd set up trusts for my kids, which paid them money every decade. I'd do some other practical stuff. Then I'd set up a foundation to pay all college and living expenses for single mothers or fathers who have children. That would be the only criteria, of course. The beneficiaries would have to be smart, motivated, and poor. IOW, this would be their big chance. Also, they would have to major in something they could do to make a good living for themselves.

We have a imaginary plan for our imaginary win. Buy a home in each of our favorite places. Hire a guy to drive us and project us. We would set up a Foundation to award grants to entrepreneurs to grow their small businesses. And we would buy land.

Under ten million I'm giving the ticket to my two kids to split, but charge them a dollar each to cover my cost.

Ridiculas money? Help the family, some friends, charities, the usual. Oh, I'd buy a new tractor for myself.

I'd let my son sign the back of the ticket, as if he himself bought it. After he settles with me, I would set about hiring an astute, funny travelling companion who would see to all the hard stuff about being me and then we would GO! but not for too long. Don't want to miss my grandson growing up.

I don't play. If I did and won, I'd refuse the money as my life would be miserable with it. One has to go into hiding, and do a complete turn around in life style when huge amounts of cash are forthcoming.

It's different if one only wins a couple of thousand, for instance.

"Full disclosure", here. My ex had a gambling addiction, which lead to us breaking up. So, I'm anti-gambling. I'm also dirt cheap. I wouldn't mid winning a few extra $ billion. But the thought of 'loosing' $1 on a ticket- OH NO. Yeah, there is a 'chance' of winning but in truth how much of a chance- one in 3-4 billion. There is a "chance" I could become the world's greatest actor, singer, dancer, ball player, politician, artist and alligator wrestler, but I don't really think I'll have build a huge fireplace mantle for all my trophies, do you?
Well "Chance" is something you can't be ready for. The professions you described can be attained by hard work, dedication and desire

I once had 12 trophies from bowling. I didn't win by chance, I earned them. But I tossed them as 1. Dusty 2. Glory days fade away.

Not me, I'd like to give it a shot!

Not so much as to make me buy a ticket, but if I find the winner on the ground I'm keeping, and perhaps squandering the money.

To be honest, the first thing you should do is hire a law firm -not just a lawyer. And depending on the size of the pot, hire multiple law firms. The chances of winning may be billions to one, but the odds of getting sued is about 99.99999%.
I win frequently but never enough to change my life for the better and present me with the opportunities I wish for because I'm nowhere near done yet.

I'm already in hiding. It would be easier with money.

I once inherited a small amount of money, and a dear friend borrowed some. I never heard from her again. I've learned my lesson in that regard.
