Stephanie and Eliza
Apart from your own, what's's a name you have always liked?
I actually like your name Sunny, it's a pretty name but I understand you disliking it so much when no-one else was called that, and you get a reaction every time you say it....I've never liked my own name, which is one of those extremely unusual names gotten out of a name dictionary. My mother wanted to name me after a recently deceased grandmother, but she didn't care for her mother's name, which was considered old-fashioned then. (It's come back into favor recently). So she found a fancier-sounding derivative, which nobody has ever heard of, and nobody ever "gets" the first time I say it. I always have to hear, "Oh, that's unusual!" and then have to get into the spelling-and-derivative discussion.
So, why didn't I ever change it? Probably because of a gut feeling that it would be disrespectful to my mother's feelings. (I am an only child). But now, in retrospect, I probably should have changed it to my grandmother's original name, nothing disrespectful about that. Not doing it at this stage of the game, but sorry I didn't do it much earlier.
I’m just happy and so are my sisters that we weren’t named for our maternal grandmother...Ethel.
She was born in Hungary and lived most of her life there and Ethel in Hungarian is Etelka which is a tad better.
Nobody called her that though...everyone except family called her “Babi”...pronounced BAWBEE.
Have no idea why.
My mothers name is just as bad...a Hungarian name that nobody ever pronounced right.
Ildiko....pronounced EELDEEKO.
Her best friend called her Hilda![]()
Both my grandmothers had the same name...so I was given it as my middle name... !! Very common name from back in the day.. but not one I would have wished to have as my first name..
BTW my sister's middle name is Patricia...and my elder brothers' daughter's first name is Patricia
My Parents didn't have a name picked out for me before I was born. They lost my twin in my Mom's 4th month and they didn't think I would
survive. When I was born they named me after the nurse. So I became Barbara Ann. When I was old enough to go to school there were 5 Barbara's in my class. I was the only one with the name Ann added to it so it got me out of the group if the teacher called Barbara. I only had to stand up if she said Barbara Ann. My Mom had my older sisters named picked out years before she was born. Her name is Charlotte.
I was alright with my name but I always liked the name Stephanie so that is my Daughters name.
