I need a new mattress

18 years ago, we bought a new mattress for our bed. It was a very traditional one with pocket springs and lambswool stuffing, but it needed to be turned over side to side and top to bottom every few months. Initially, this was no problem although the mattress was VERY heavy. There was an expected life of around 20 years, and until recently, the mattress provided a very comfortable nights sleep. Now, turning the mattress regularly is necessary to maintain the comfort and support and for two 70+ year olds, this is a struggle. We've just turned it and hopefully it will last till we get a new one.

There are so many different types now so we'll visit a few furniture shops to see what's available. As the saying goes, you need a good bed and a good pair of shoes - if you're not one, you're in the other.

And those memory foam ones? Oh boy are they heavy. I don't have to flip mine but I have figured out how to turn it without killing myself. I'm probably going to need to replace it in the near future. I am not looking forward to it. Like you said, there are so many different constructions out there now.

I bought a new bed and mattress just over a year ago... The mattress is very heavy, but with a struggle I've been able to turn it on my own...

The bed & mattress were not cheap, the mattress is Orthopdedic...

Previous to that I'd had Tempur mattress..for about 3 years , and it was horrendous for making me sweat. I;d wake up in the morning drenched like I'd been swimming, so that had to go...

After major back surgery in 2016, I bought a Purple Mattress (brand name). The inner construction is called GelFlex Grid. It was delivered rolled up in a plastic bag, and it sort of pops open and flattens out when you cut a slit down one side of the bag.

Anyway, it's still super comfortable. You don't flip Purple Mattresses over. In fact, only the UP side is quilted. For no particular reason except habit, I've turned it a few times so the foot end becomes the head end, but you don't have to do that either, because GelFlex Grid is guaranteed to maintain it's shape for 10 years - 10yrs for the cheaper ones, and at least 20yrs for the higher-end ones.

I bought a cheaper one. I got the full-sized (aka double-sized), and paid only $169.00 for it. One-hundred and Sixty-Nine bucks! Plus tax. For a mattress, that's fantastically cheap. And they tossed in a whole set of sheets and pillow cases for free.

Purple was a new company then, just launched off a Kickstarter. The same mattress goes for $1,100 now, and the high-end ones start at $1,800. First-time buyers get $500 off.

I've hit that 10 year mark, and the mattress feels just a bit soft right where my butt nests. Butt it's not a big deal...yet.
I'll def buy another one when the time comes.

I wish they had handles on the ends as well.

I'm thinking that I just tried one of these out the other day...Does it looked like a waffle cut? I happened to walk in to the store ...killing time while out walking and the place had an odor to it. From the beds? I laid on a couple and every time I raised my head, I got dizzy. Don't know if it was from the bed or the smell of all the beds!

Anyways, the bed cost over $4000 !!! The girl gave me a bottle of water for my dizziness and I left the store.

p.s. Glad it works for you ☺️

Yeah, the smell comes from the gel stuff it's made of. It goes away after you open the package and let it sit for an hour or so. It's probly what made you dizzy. I've read some people are even allergic to it...they break out in a rash.

It's an awesome mattress, but I wouldn't pay 4-freaking-thousand for it. I probly wouldn't pay 2 thou.

I'm going to go check out the pricing again...but I'm pretty sure that's what it said.
