I need help and advice! :)

Hello,
I am a student and we need your help and opinion :)

We are working on a product to assist senior citizen in mobility. This is our problem statement: In late adulthood, fine motor skills diminish over time due to aging, usage of multiple medication and other factors. How can we help people over 65 improve or recover their motor skills?

I appreciate your time and consideration.
I believe with your voice and our determination, we can create a better future one step at a time :)

Sincerely,
Prince

What is the hardest activity to do during the day?
Do any disabilities limit you from doing what you like?
Do you have any assistive equipment?
On a scale of 1 – 10, how mobile/independent are you?
Do you use your surrounding environment to assist you?
Railing, hand bars, tables, etc.
Do you need a caregiver to assist you?
Is there a certain time of day your mobility is worst? At its best?
How long does it take to get ready?
Which part of your body is most troubling?
Are there things you had to change in your lifestyle because of mobility issues?
Do you try to exercise?
If so, how often?
Are you motivated to exercise? Why or why not?

What is the hardest activity to do during the day? Empty my pet mandrill's litter box

Do any disabilities limit you from doing what you like? No, but I AM disappointed in my inability to fly.

Do you have any assistive equipment? An extended-reach grabber, but it's mainly used to torture the dog.

On a scale of 1 – 10, how mobile/independent are you? If 10 is very independent, then 11.

Do you use your surrounding environment to assist you? When I'm in ninja mode I become the night.

Railing, hand bars, tables, etc. Newel post, foot rests, chairs ... oh, are we playing Synonyms?

Do you need a caregiver to assist you? Only if she dresses up in her Naughty Nurse outfit.

Is there a certain time of day your mobility is worst? At its best? I find that I move the least when I'm sleeping, although I do toss and turn. I move the best when being pursued by bears, mountain lions and irate husbands.

How long does it take to get ready? If I have some good wine and primo weed, usually 15-25 minutes. She hasn't complained yet ...

Which part of your body is most troubling? To whom?

Are there things you had to change in your lifestyle because of mobility issues? Yes - I find it slightly embarrassing to try to fill my gas tank with gas, mainly because I don't own a car anymore. Management has asked me to not visit the premises.

Do you try to exercise? I don't try - I do.

If so, how often? Every day for the past 43 years. Except during Philstivus - I get a special dispensation.

Are you motivated to exercise? Why or why not? I'm a Taijiquan instructor - YOU do the math.

What years were your prime years? 1, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13 ...

What were you able to do? As much as I could get away with.

How old were you when your vision/balance/hearing/mobility start to decline? They haven't. I am the very model of a modern healthy gentleman.

What are you able to do? That depends upon how much you're willing to pay ...

What are you not able to do? Fly. *sigh*

How is your life today? Pretty good - how's yours?

What are you able to incorporate into your lifestyle? Small furry mammals, SuperGlue and sporks.

How do plan to manage your health from now on so it will not get worse? Sex and alcohol and drugs, not necessarily in that order.

I still call B-S on this! Phil, you obviously see it as I do and reading your answers made the thread worthwhile.

However negative it may sound...two in one week securing answers for research from this extremely small group. Ppfftttt!!!! For those of you kind enough to answer, you have a kinder nature than I do. I've been done in by telemarketing abuse!

Thank you, but I don't see it as necessarily being BS; once again it's just that a questionnaire like this, for me, is like dangling a worm in front of a hungry fish.

It might be extremely small, but it's still useful.

... why does that phrase sound so familiar?

Ultimately, I'm not sure I qualify for the survey anyway - I'm think I'm still a relative babe in the woods compared to what they're looking for.

I think I can save you an awful lot of time in research and paperwork Prince. A one week course in living as many of us do.

It will answer many of your questions from personal experience and gain you kudos for innovation and dedication to your chosen career.

Find a 2 yard length of soft rope. Place the middle of it on the back of your neck. Bend forward at least at a 45 degree angle. While holding that position firmly tie each end of the rope to the front centre of your belt, ensuring there is no slack.

Remain in this position for a week.

Under no circumstances may the apparatus be detached. Especially not to sleep! You must find a way of getting comfortable enough to do that in the position you are in.

Many of the study group have no relief from that position and to gain full understanding of the problems encountered in transference of pressure point unnatural stress to other areas of the body not equipped to handle it and it's associated pain, it is imperative that the researcher duplicate the condition.

All normal duties associated with independent living must be accomplished in this position. 'Assistance' must be limited to what a casual, working, or non resident 'carer' could be reasonably be expected to offer over a very long term situation and still have a life of their own.

You must cook, clean, wash and dress, launder, and shop for essentials to the absolute limit of your ability.

'Too hard' is not a qualification for exemption to require assistance, only 'impossible' qualifies.

The range of mobility, physical limitations, pain, exasperation, assistance required, mental attitude, change of lifestyle, difficulty of exercising, and which colour walking stick is best will be made abundantly clear to you without bothering other people by asking about their experiences.

Believe me you won't need the whole week to answer all your questions but it will ensure that you never again see the subjects of your research as numbers on a graph, lumps of meat to process as an appointment, or grumpy old buggers.

The absence of empathy in care professionals is the most frustrating aspect of aged care. I have spinal damage inflicted by a 20 something radiologist who simply had no idea that a quick tug to 'align' the spine of an osteoporotic person could inlflict the above 'rope trick' on a 'client' for life! I didn't even sue her, she was just stupid and didn't understand that not being able to 'align' the bloody spine was why I was getting the Xray!

She had just crushed my third vertebrae and asked, "are you okay to walk out and get dressed by yourself as we are really busy today? !!!" As I was already doped to the eyeballs for the previous 2, and by then running on murderous levels of what was probably adrenelin, I answered "NO, you've done quite enough for me already!"... and I did walk out, and I did dress myself... and I will NEVER have another Xray!

So... Never mind the numbers, the graphs, and the demographics Prince, .... just do the 'exercise' and find out for yourself!

If you make millions from the above advice PM me for an address to send the commission cheque. 10% will be fine.

Yours sincerely Grumpy.
