I Need Help With A Hiking Term

It’s when you are descending and you’re screwed! You slid down a bit but cannot get back up, continuing down is certain death. Stuck! What is this called? Thank you.

I don't know what anybody else calls being stuck, but I used to call the process of getting yourself out of a situation like that "backjacking".....laying on your back and, depending on whether you're on scree or solid rock, doing the "earthworm" maneuver to make progress back up the slope by either digging in your heels or putting the soles of your boots flat on the ground.

I did everything possible to not GET myself in that place but sometimes what happens...happens.

All in my younger days, of course. Now, my efforts are directed toward getting myself out of the lounge chair without making too many embarrassing noises.

Tried to look it up, but online hikers' dictionary has some 300 entries, it is 7:30 in the morning and we're going on a day long shopping trip. Maybe you can ask one of the AI search things, i don't like dealing with them. Edit: Just after posted saw Hollydolly had provided it!

The term not nearly as important as your response: solving the problem. Do you have cell phone signal? A hiking partner on safe ground? Just don't panic, be still and consider carefully before taking any action.
