I think what America lacks today is a sense of honor.

I think politics has ruined this country. There was a time when the people would vote for the better person. I wish parties would get rid of their platforms they say they will protect. Not everyone in the party thinks the same. There are Democrats that believe the border should have been kept closed and there are Republicans that believe in pro-choice on abortion.

People want to vote for self thinkers. If we didn’t have the two party system, our country would be better off. I also strongly favor term limits. It seems to me the longer a politician stays in office, the richer he becomes.

Someone recently said to me "there are no good people anymore". I don't know that I would go that far, but things have changed for sure. I used to expect people would do the right thing. Now I just hope they will but don't put much faith in it.

Ethics used to be taught in college. While it is still available in some colleges, it is not a required course in most. I wish it was.

I agree in the sense that ethics/morals are no longer virtues that we treasure and want to teach or pass on to the younger generation. All of our time is spent pursuing our goals which usually involve business. When we are through with business, we are pursuing pleasure. The content within each human is rarely thought of. The quality of the persons character is excluded in our lives. Without that we really have no role models or a connection with behavioral guidance.

I don't think there ever was this past great era when there was no corruption, dishonesty, etc., and all lived in peace and harmony. So, when exactly was this heavenly period?

4,000 years ago, ancient Egyptians complained of corruption and tomb robbing. There's going to be a lot of "the place is going to hell" rhetoric, now that we're in an election year.
I agree. Read American history and it's one story after another of gettin' and gettin' and gittin' some more. There are some bright spots and outstanding human beings along the way.

With all that gettin' and gettin' and gettin', where is the care for the least of us?

Not thinking just of America, but looking more at the current International scene. Do you think some citizens (the supporters) admire & envy a leader or politician known to be untrammeled, selfish, and disdainful? Wishing they could be "successful" in the same manner?
Yes. Many, many people want to be RICH. Doesn't matter what generation we're talking about - Boomers, Gen Z, Gen X, all of the above. Many have decided the goal of the Game of Life is to Get Rich. Many do not care who they trample along the way to that goal, which is another age-old condition.

IDK - maybe because I had a dad who saw real war, not videogame war, but the real thing with the blood, guts, bombs, plane crashes, fire and terror, and he just wanted PEACE after he left that and returned to civilian life. Maybe I absorbed that kind of goal-ideal from him? IDK. Or maybe it's because of my bad marriage and the afterwards that I just long for peace, not riches. (I have read that is actually quite normal in America - most of us long to get to the middle class and stay there - that's why inflation is so painful. It is a threat to that secure status.)

I've noticed that often about Vietnam Vets too, even the homeless guys. They just want freakin' PEACE. Even if its just peace in a tent in the woods, they want peace.

not just America - ya don't need to feel alone - its a planetary scurge imo - we have all become too smart for our own good as me old granny used to say - a planetary malaise - we'll need some out of space visitations soon!

Sadly Vintage, in so many instances, you are right. There are still many who have integrity and moral compasses, however. Too bad more of them are not in positions of authority.
I think many of those good people do end up in leadership positions but then find in order to be successful and remain in their position they need to keep compromising their ethics.

Yes, and no, for me.

Politics are a necessary evil. We need a government to help us run things. We need laws, we need enforcement of said laws. We need basic societal controls. We need protection from nefarious companies, countries, and so on. Governments are essential.

What has gone wrong is a lot of things. For example, generally speaking, in any given election, 50% to 60% of the people will get the government they voted for. The remaining 40% or so won't. It's called democracy (or a Democratic Republic, if you prefer). It's always been this way. Yet today, that's become almost juvenile. Loses simply aren't accepted, and people continue to fight as though every day is election day, even when that event was only yesterday. So any division and/or anger generated from the electoral process just goes on and on and on and on.

How many times do you see someone labelled a "leftie" or "woke" over something or other? Because, you know, an opinion on one, two, or even three things totally defines you as a person. It's lazy thinking, slang. It's the kind of thing I saw in High School.

But my main point is - it's not the parties. It's us. It's the people of our countries that don't simply allow this to happen, but participate in it. No-one is getting elected without being voted for. We should love our neighbor, even if they support a different party. We should stop looking for easy answers to very complex, generational issues.

Look at the problems of today: Stuttering economy, homelessness, prices, illicit drug use, housing crisis, to name a few. NONE of these are new. Economizes go up and down based on global markets, and your pain should be measured in those terms. Homelessness isn't new, it's been a thing in the US since it was discovered! Illicit drug use has been a problem since forever too. We're more organized now, it's easier to move things around, but it's still the same old problem. Housing never keeps up with demand, because if it did it would tank profit from buying your own home, so it see-saws.

What's new today is that people can express their anger more widely, and largely anonymously. So all the nastiness comes out, oozing from their fingers for us all to see. Ultimately, it's down to us to try and fix it. Or probably more properly, for the next generation to have a go.

I think I assumed most people had strong ethical values from their upbringing. Maybe that is the minority.
I think it is the minority. Even my memories from way back, and it certainly seems true today, is that the main thing that "good" parents have taught their kids was how to make (or marry into) plenty of money. Still seems true today (except when you've got parents who aren't teaching their kids sh*t, of course).

What shocks me is that ethics has to be taught in college. I think I assumed most people had strong ethical values from their upbringing. Maybe that is the minority.
I used to use a program called Character Counts in my classroom. Character Counts!. It used to be popular back then. I think it has fallen from favor in classrooms now but I don't know why.

IMO this is a GREAT idea. If I were school board director of any elementary school, I would try to integrate this system into all the curriculums. It would become the atmosphere of true learning from the ground up.

When all we hear is how terrible things are, what can be done? (Sigh) How about those of us who know better, work a little harder to personnally live out our ethics? It works, honest. Start with giving your fellow man a break.

A good friend told me one time, 'All absolutes are false'. I think that applies to this thread. I think there are still more good people than there are bad ones. Seems to me that our instant communications be it text, or social media or 24 hour news channels simply give the smaller group of bad persons a larger audience. There are bad people, and it pays to be aware, but I think it is a worthwhile thing to learn to read people. That little voice in the back of your head is worth listening too.

We've had term limits at the State and local level for decades. All it did was put more shadowy puppet masters in control and reduce politicians to brainless puppets fronting for them.

Yeah, that's what certain people want you to think. People who want you to conform to their brand of anger and fear. In the US, money talks, for sure. If you're rich, you have influence. Corporations want to make ever increasing amounts of money at the expense of all else. It's a system. If you want it to change, the system itself must be altered. Things like getting rid of political contributions by special interest groups. It apples to both sides of the house.

{shrug} the DOW closed at >40,000 last Friday (5/17). Things can't be all bad.

YMMV
Look at it this way. With prices inflated, and there just might be a little gouging in the mix, a company that simply maintains its historic profit margin is having a great year. Hence the earnings reports and dividend payouts will be up. At the heart of the matter is the fact that wages are not keeping pace with the rate of inflation, and the typical family's financial position is going backward. When you see reports of numerous jobs available and unfilled take a look at what those jobs are. The old saying, numbers don't lie, but liars use numbers.
