I was verbally Abused Yesterday

The way I handle those soliciting funds, on the street:

Excuse me, Sir, can I talk to you?
No! (I then walk away.)

Sir, can you spare a dollar?
I'm afraid you've mistaken me for your banker. I'm sure he's around here someplace, though. Best of luck finding him. (I then walk away.)

I have NEVER gotten into a confrontation with any street hustlers, and being in Austin, Texas, for over forty years, now, that's saying a lot!

I seemed to have kicked a hornets nest here just by
telling you what happened and I am now sorry that
I did.

Normally my answer would be NO, but sitting at a table
in company and being cornered by somebody demanding
that I firstly listen to her and secondly finance her next ???
all including expletives, none of you who think me wrong,
would be happy and you guys carry guns!

Somebody said that I should have called her madam, I am
afraid Laurie that she would think that insulting.

Mike.

You did fine Mike, especially considering you weren’t expecting it at all. Its so easy for any of us to offer advice and suggestions after the fact while we sit comfortably in our homes. Hindsight is always better than foresight.

You handled it well. It’s easy to say , just walk away but when you are sitting there with company chatting, its not as easy nor should you have to.

No, no, don't say that Mike. I'm glad you shared.

I for one take the word "abuse" very seriously. "Some of them want to abuse you; some of them want to be abused by you" just popped in my head. There are many unpleasant, unfortunate occurrences in our lives. I've lately seen homeless panhandlers who scare me very much, but still wouldn't call it abuse. Things happen. Wish they didn't, they still do.

Wasn't that a song by Eurythmics?

Where did you get ‘this’ information from?
From what I read , Mike, the Original Poster didn’t wish to give money to any panhandles.

I’m not sure how you came up with all this ‘additional’ information . 🧐

Sitting in a Costa Coffee shop with my friend Bobby,
we meet every Friday to put the World right over a
couple of coffees.

A woman approaches our table holding up a card
that looked like a credit card and said "I am in a
Premier Inn Hotel", I said good for you, but I spoke
over what she was saying, "and I need help".

This lady was not very clean and the young woman
who served the coffee was trying to get her out, so
I said "Sorry I don't speak to beggars", this set her
off and she started to shout and call me all kinds of
bad things, none that I would like to repeat here or
anywhere for that matter, she kept turning around
and throwing some new word, new to me anyway,
in my direction, the coffee shop is in a mall out in
the walkway, not inside a shop.

I am not callous and do give to charity, but at my own
time and choosing where it goes.

The staff in the shop were so grateful that I had upset
so much that she left, they all thanked me.

Mike.

Sorry Mike, but there was no need for you to call her a "beggar".

It wouldn't have killed you to politely tell her you had nothing for her.

Well Ladies I didn't say that I don't give to beggars,
I said that I don't speak to beggars, a slight difference!

When she said that she wasn't a beggar, I asked, "What
do you need help with"? She said that she needed money!

That is begging.

Hollydolly, the security in that particular Mall are nocturnal
I think, they are in an underground office at the other end
and rarely seen during the day.

Mike.

In my opinion you were as bad as her o_O
