I Wonder How Many People Are Addicted To Soda

Paladin1950

Still love 50's & 60's music!
I was at my local Price Chopper yesterday. I was waiting in line behind this man with glasses who looked like he was in his 50's. His shopping cart was loaded with soda. He had at least 2 twelve packs of Coca Cola. A couple of twelve packs of Pepsi Cola. Three or four other types of soda. The cart was loaded with 12 packs of soda. His whole family were probably soda addicts. He just didn't look well to me. I wonder why?

If someone drinks a can or two a day, that's nothing. Although, I never would. But with this man and his family, they probably have soda for every meal, and throughout the day. There is absolutely nothing in soda that your body needs, which is why I haven't drank any in years. Some people spend as much money on soda, as others spend on beer and cigarettes.

If a person doesn't spend any money on beer, soda, or cigarettes, can you imagine how much more money they would have in the bank?

Perhaps this guy was having a party or contributing to a food pantry?
first thing I though too that he may have been buying for a party...

Also here when we see people buying things in bulk, they're often small shop owners...

However that said, my good friend Jen, was totally addicted to coke for many years.. she drank at least 3 cans of coke every day... yet she had/has beautiful teeth..she's not overweight.. has great skin...

I imagine many people have had periods through their lives where they were drinking from cheap cans. :) I know we did for at least 15 years. I probably would have 4-5 sodas and about 5-6 beers a day. I also started weighing over 200 lbs. That took a few years for me to bring down to 180. There is a price to be paid for over indulging.

All of that soda might not have been just for him, but he just didn't look very healthy. You could tell that he probably does drink quite a lot.

When I was in high school, there was a fellow student that was overweight. I didn't realize at the time that he drank a lot of Pepsi. A co-worker of mine years later, told me that he once worked for a local store, and this person who was now a man, drank nothing but Pepsi. He said just about every day, he had to deliver a case of Pepsi (24 cans) to my old classmate. That meant that he had Pepsi with all of his meals and in between.

He became an out patient in the therapy department at the nursing home where I worked. I was shocked at his massive size. He also had one leg amputated at the knee. I heard from one of the therapists that he might have to have his other leg amputated also. So he switched to Diet Pepsi. It was too little, too late. His organs started to shut down and he passed away. He was only in his late 40's, like I was at the time.

I could care less what others imbibe. Personal choice. But there is this:

According to the American Kidney Fund, a recent study suggests that drinking two or more carbonated sodas, diet or regular, each day may increase your risk for chronic kidney disease.

It's concerning to witness such heavy soda consumption. Beyond financial costs, it's the health toll that worries me.
I hope they consider healthier options for their well-being and pocket.

Many.

I knew a person who gave up sugar soda and that's all she had to do to lose 20 lbs. I have seen men on TV saying the same thing. All they did was stop drinking Coca Cola and they lost weight.

Well, I drink a can of Coca Cola every day, and yes, it's the fully fueled one. Is it good for me? Absolutely not. But I really love my glass of Coke, and I forgive myself the sin. I tried diet - not for me, I'm afraid.

I was always concerned about diet sodas which several people I know drink. The addition of aspartame doesn't sound healthy.

There is plenty of information out there that suggests diet soda's are no better for you. Personally, it's a case of drink a sugared soda, or don't drink one. I'd not switch to diet.

When I was on the road in the US, as a Expedite Freight owner/operator based out of Toronto, I was amazed at the number of people who drank Mountain Dew for breakfast at the truck stops. Huge amounts of it, along with huge plates of grease laden eggs, bacon, home fries, and meat patties. I was eating cereal with milk, 2 slices of whole wheat toast, and one cup of coffee. I learned that many of the US brand soft drinks are high in caffein with Mountain Dew being one the most caffein loaded ones. jImB.

When I did my drastic diet change to many vegetables and minimum processed foods, the one thing I still abstain from completely is soda. I will drink plain carbonated water, however. I am sure that a few cans a week would not be a problem, I just would rather have an occasional dessert instead.

I am convinced that excessive soda is a major factor in the worldwide obesity epidemic.

If you are trying to lose weight or control your blood sugars diet sodas are definitely better than sugared ones.

I see no problem with either. In moderation, like everything else.

I've had my blood sugars tested a few times in recent months (while they're looking for other things) and they're actually good.

Still, I can't justify drinking a full-powered Coke on health grounds. It's a luxury. A cheap luxury. I'm not proud of it, but damn I love the taste. :D

thats good Vaughan - so I guess if you have normal blood sugars and you are not trying to lose weight - full coke is ok in moderation.

It probably would be for me too - but I do need t o watch my weight and my calorie intake - so when I drink soda, I opt for a no sugar version.

I would drink the equivalent of about 3 cans per week - that comes under moderation to me.

I quit drinking coca cola many years ago. Now, I just drink ice water when thirsty. I do have a lemon juice frozen bar once in awhile.
