Ice Hockey Player Killed in Freak Accident

Have you actually watched the video? I have, and the fact is that the player whose skate cut the other player was falling backwards after colliding with one of his team mates, while both of them were trying to stop the forward who was carrying the puck to wards their goal area. While falling backwards, one of the defensemen's legs flew up into the air, striking the forward in the throat. No intent to injure. Now think about baseball, and the times that a pitcher has hit a batter in the head, with a pitch ? Is that an attempt to injure the other player ? You tell me. JimB.
Just a few times. At first glance it looked liked he was trying to push himself away. The falling backward would explain the leg in the air. I don't think cutting his throat was intentional.

The pitcher throwing at a batters is intentional and should be considered somekind of reckless endangerment. They know the damage 90 mph fastball could do so intentionally pitching near the body. If they hit the player it should be assault.

What I was really getting at was.......In both hockey and baseball, the players KNOW that they can be hurt during the game, and they consent to play the game. Just as MMA fighters and boxers KNOW that they can be hurt during a bout, and they go ahead and compete anyway.

I raced oval track cars here in southern Ontario for about ten years. I KNEW that despite the mandated safety equipment, such as three layer fire suits, full face helmets and HANS neck protection devices, there was an inherent level of danger in the activity I was involved in. We accepted that risk.

Racing on a track is a lot LESS dangerous than driving on the 400 series highways here in Ontario. On the track everyone is sober, is driving in the same direction, and is paying very close attention to what they are doing. No one on the track is using a hand held device, or trying to swat a misbehaving kid in the back seat. My car was hand built and designed specifically for oval track racing. It was inspected every time I raced at any track by the safety crew. JImB.

Jimintoronto. Watching the pregame activities tonight, it has occurred to me, how lucky you are to see the games on CBC. South of the border, we don't even get to see the anthem sung. We get a bare minimum of hockey related information. We really, really miss being able to get CBC. Really.

I get what you are saying, but the reality now is that NHL games in Canada are broadcast by The Sports Network (TSN) and only the Saturday night Canadian games are seen on CBC TV. The play by play and the color commentators are much the same as when it was "CBC"S Hockey Night In Canada ". The Leafs games both home and away are carried by TSN on TV, and Leafs Radio on "The Fan " AM radio stations. TSN is a division of Bell Canada Media, and they also cover the Blue Jays, and the Canadian Football League, as well as the Canadian NASCAR series races.

When I was running as an owner/operator with Dynamex Expedite in the 1990's, one of our big customers was TSN. We hauled a lot of their production equipment around both Canada and the USA in trailers. Entire trailers full of broadcast equipment that just had to get there on time. TSN does a very professional job of sports telecasting.

This years Leafs team is a mystery. The two top scorers in the league, but shaky goaltending, and a tendency to lose momentum in the third period. Tonight's game was the Hall of Fame Game, a lead up to Monday's HHOF 2023 induction ceremony here in Toronto.

Unlike other pro sports, Hockey has made sure that women are well represented in the Hall. This year's 8 inductees include 4 women who were national and Olympic hockey team players, most with multiple gold medals and IIHF championships. JimB.

Last night's Leafs versus Calgary game was a nail biter. Tied at 4/4 at the end of 60 minutes. Played 5 minutes of 3 on 3 overtime, with no goals scored. Then went to the shoot out format. Max Domi scored on the 7th round, for a 5/4 Toronto win. Joe Woll in goal for the Leafs. William Nylander ( who was born in Calgary when his Dad played there for the Flames ) continued his 14 game points streak for the Leafs. Austin Mathews and Mitch Marner continue to amaze the fans. Nylander and Domi are both second generation NHL players, with Fathers who were stars in the past.

Connor Bedard the young Blackhawks forward scored 4 goals in a recent game. His first month in the league at age 18, and he is burning up the place. He will only get better as he grows physically. JimB.

The Leafs-Flames game is what we watched last night. I think the best game we watched so far this season. We have our favorite teams, but will watch any good matchups. It's great to see Tie's son doing well. We enjoy seeing the sons of the players that we watched through the decades.

If you don't mind me asking...How are you getting the Leaf games at your house ? Do you have a sat dish, or an online streaming account ?. Here our Rogers cable network has 455 choices for $29.99 a month. I also follow the CFL Toronto Argos football team on TSN. This is the 150th year for the Argos. They were first set up in 1873 and have competed every year since then. This year they are 15 and 2, and they will be the eastern conference team in the Grey Cup game. This is the 114th year for the Grey Cup. JimB.

UPDATE

The player who cut the deceased has now been arrested for suspicion of manslaughter.

Arrest made after ex-NHL player Adam Johnson killed by skate blade in on-ice collision

This happened in the UK so what standards or processes they used to come to this conclusion unsure.

“We have been speaking to highly specialized experts in their field to assist in our inquiries"
Thank goodness that those who are investigating this tragedy are not as uneducated as I am about hockey

You seem to be implying that a professional hockey player with at least 10 years of experience would knowingly attempt to injure another player ? Why would you think that ? Repeat after me.....a TRAGIC ACCIDENT. By the way, this Canadian hockey equipment maker has sold out ALL of their neck protectors since this accident took place.

The player has been charged with manslaughter.

The player has been charged with manslaughter.
Perhaps you should do a little research about what such a charge actually means, under British law. The Crown Prosecution service will review the charge as laid by the Police in Yorkshire, and decide IF there is sufficient evidence to go to trial. Being charged does not automatically result in a prosecution going to trial.

In general, in British law, for a criminal conviction, the Crown needs to prove three parts to the offense. Motive, Means, and Intent. If one of those factors is not provable, the case will result in a finding of "not guilty ". In this case , the Crown Prosecutor will have a difficult time proving "intent ". The accused has the right to choose to be tried by EITHER a 12 person jury, or by Judge alone. If I were this man's defense council I would advise him to go for a trial by Judge only.

My source...About 20 years of being a licensed Private Investigator here in Ontario. During that time period I testified in all 3 levels of courts here in Ontario. The rules of evidence and the Canadian Criminal Code in Canada are very similar to those used in The United Kingdom. JimB.

The player arrested for manslaughter is Matt Petgrave.
Some stat facts that may provide insight into his game mindset if not intent ...

3ice described Petgrave as “the EIHL’s most penalized player” while playing for the Sheffield Steelers.

Euro Hockey listed Petgrave as the league’s penalty leader for 2022-23 for the EIHL. The page says he had 129 PIM or “penalty infraction minutes.”

Although that site doesn’t list the infractions, it’s possible to find old box scores showing Petgrave’s penalties. For example, he accrued a penalty for “tripping” in 2015-16 for New Brunswick, according to a box score for that game. He had a penalty for “holding” in 2020 while playing for the Utica Comets, in another example. He was called for “spearing” in a 2022 game with the Sheffield Steelers, according to the Elite Ice Hockey League.

From 2013 to 2017, he was listed as having 328 career penalty minutes, according to Vredshockey.com.

In 2010, Petgrave was suspended for five games, according to the Canadian Hockey League, which wrote, “Matt Petgrave will sit out the next five games for an infraction in the third period of last Saturday’s 9-4 win over Sarnia.”

In 2018, the ECHL announced that “Brampton’s Matt Petgrave has been suspended indefinitely and fined an undisclosed amount as a result of his actions in ECHL Game #963, Brampton at Kalamazoo, on April 7.” The ECHL is a mid-level professional ice hockey league based in New Jersey.

That same year, he was suspended for one game, according to the American Hockey League, which wrote on its website, “Laval Rocket defenseman Matt Petgrave has been suspended for one (1) game as a consequence of a slew-footing incident in a game at Toronto on Mar. 28. Petgrave was suspended under the provisions of AHL Rule 21.1 after being assessed a match penalty. He will miss Laval’s game tonight (Mar. 30) at Binghamton.”

According to the U.S. Hockey Rule Book, “Slew Footing is the act of a player using his leg or foot to knock or kick an opponent’s feet from under him.”

A statement on the ECHL’s website said, “Petgrave is fined and suspended under Rule #28 – Supplementary Discipline as a result of his actions at 3:46 of the third period. Petgrave will miss Brampton’s game against Adirondack today (April 8) and any further discipline will be announced at a later date.” That article did not provide additional details.

After reading what Naturally posted about this guy what a horrible person. Unfortunately someone lost his life because of him.

I have yet to see good video on this. Either the websites load real slow when trying to view it or there seems to be one taken by a cell phone cam. Have to wonder what authorities are looking at.

Obviously the FOUR on ice officials that were present at that game would be questioned by Police, as would the members of both teams, which would number 20 players on each side. Plus the team Managers, and assistant coaches of both teams all of whom would have been standing behind the two team benches as the game was being played. So right there we have about 55 individuals who were within about 60 to 80 feet of the incident, when it happened. For those that don't know, a standard hockey rink is 200 feet long and 80 feet wide.

Naturally needs to educate himself about what penalties are normal in hockey games. Tripping, holding, and interference are found in every level of hockey, from 10 year olds up to adult pro leagues. All of those infractions result in a two minute penalty.

How about this for an idea ? Lets WAIT for the case to make it's way through the courts ? I am perfectly happy to let the UK courts decide if this situation was a criminal act, or not. JimB.

Hockey games in the UK are not usually broadcast on television, as it is considered to be a minor sport there, in terms of popularity, and fan numbers. Any video will be examined by the Police in Yorkshire as a part of their investigation.

AS I pointed out above, at least 50 or more eye witnesses would be questioned. The 4 on ice officials, the team players on both sides, and the team managers, assistant coaches, and the team physical trainers all would have been looking at the action on the ice. The video that I have seen shows the player who died was advancing the puck into the other team's end of the ice, just in front of the player benches and about 30 feet from the side boards of the rink. Everyone on the ice, and the players and support staff on the benches, would have had a clear view of the action. JimB.

In your opinion. JimB.

South Yorkshire Police Investigators aren't looking for opinions, so yours nor mine doesn't matter.

“Our investigation launched immediately following this tragedy and we have been carrying out extensive inquiries ever since to piece together the events which led to the loss of Adam in these unprecedented circumstances,” South Yorkshire Detective Chief Superintendent Becs Horsfall said in a statement. “We have been speaking to highly specialized experts in their field to assist in our inquiries."

Just the facts ;)
