An iconic and historical ocean front restaurant the Cliff House will close forever due to the pandemic and federal lease issues. Was around for over 100 years, rebuilt a couple of times and over looks another historical site-the ruins of Sutro Baths.

Fascinating video history of the Sutro Baths which mysteriously burnt down in 1966

The original Cliff House mansion... what a dream it must have been to call home!

It is sad, I heard this on the radio.

I also found out from my stepfather last evening that he got a letter. The one room school house he went to in Swanton California (up the coast from Santa Cruz) that was now a private home, burned. I was very sorry to hear that.

I remember that restaurant from my first visit to San Francisco in 1979. It knocked my socks off. Sorry to see it go.

Well, if you are in favor of all the lock down ? Thank yourself.

Hell, let's remove all the china virus scare, lock everything down, and starve everyone to death.

I have driven past the Cliff House more times than I can even count (it was on my weekly commute for 18 years),and went to Ocean Beach many, many times over my lifetime. But I never have stepped inside. All I ever heard was that it was mediocre, overpriced food. Sounds like it WILL reopen, with someone willing and able to sign a new lease. Then it will probably be just as mediocre but with even higher prices lol. And it won`t likely happen until this pandemic is over.....

Alot of fancy or well known restaurants are mediocre. It's the name one pays for. Sometimes it's location, the view, a novelty, unique dish, gimmick etc. I've eaten in some very touristy restaurants that everyone couldn't wait to get into and other rather expensive restaraunts and their food was mediocre and way over priced. If one is talking about the name, location etc more than THE food yes mediocre and over priced should be expected.

They have a tourist location here. It should be more boardwalk or bazaar oriented when the next set of business go in there. Go back to the days of the Sutro Baths. Or have an low budget/economy menu along with the more pricey stuff.

There was a time back in the 70's and 80's when it was still quite good. I went there a few times during those years when I wanted a special experience and I was never disappointed, a little lower on cash but never disappointed. My last trip there was rather lackluster and happened about a couple of years ago.

I'm sure that some other restauranteur will decide to get a lease on it. It's view is still magnificent even if the service and food weren't up to par.

My favorite memory of the area has nothing to do with the Cliff House but with the X-Games when they had the street luge course going down past the Cliff House.

That`s one of my favorites as well-although my all time favorite memories of the area are being dropped off for the day at Playland at the Beach! Hours and hours spent at the Funhouse-only our firstborn kiddo got to experience a bit of the magic-the rest were "born too late"....
