If you were tired of living alone, which would you prefer, a husband/wife, or a roommate?

I've been living with my wife for 64 years! Man and wife is always the best living arrangement!
No I totally disagree... Not ALWAYS by any means..... 50 % of the divorced population would attest to that

You're lucky to have been able to live harmoniously for almost all of MY life.... but that's not the case for most people...

The bottom line is that for a single older widow to find someone to drag him out from under his rock of long days of loneliness without giving up his 30 acre forested hideaway for an apartment in town (no bloody way) is next to impossible even with the offer of ZERO rent.
Have you tried finding something that's at least a little closer to town? You don't necessarily have to size down to a tiny apartment. Maybe a nice house on a lot less than 30 acres? (I'm reluctantly living on "only" 1 acre and it's not only plenty of room, it's too darn much room!)

I'm not tired of living alone. I would share it with a canary though :)

I've said somewhere recently about coming out of a relationship where we didn't live together ie he had his place, me mine. It was a happy relationship, and we still have a happy relationship, just altered 'cos of circumstances.
You can interact more with a parrot. Ours was 45 years old when she passed.

I’m kinda in this situation myself, living alone for the first time in 40 years. Good thing that I’m introverted and mildly socially phobic! I think what I’m looking for is a “loving friendship” kind of thing, someone to take out to dinners, watch movies with, go shopping and day-tripping with, but have separate houses, with availability upon request if agreeable. Is this within the realm of the reasonable and attainable? I dunno… 🤔

There's a lid for every pot 🫠 Definitely thinks it's attainable.

A lady of course. Sharing a room or home with another man would be worst than a nightmare for me.

I have always respected women much more than men. Why? Men cause wars. Men with grey hair drive around on motorcycles and make horrible noise. A lot of men have some sort of weird "macho" hangup! Women are always better at conversation and a lot more social than men. Men mostly talk politics and football. BORING! That's how I see it!

Right now I have 3 roommates. I wanted to keep it at 2 and have an empty room between them. But a few surprise expenses forced me to reconsider.

They are all guys, no two alike, and I probably wouldn't have chosen them but they came about much like stray cats do. We get along well and help each other out. I am grateful.
