Illegal Immigrants in France and the U.K.

What is going on in the U.K. with large numbers of illegals trying to enter that nation via the tunnel at Calais, France? Do any of the UK members here have any info? Several reports about this are showing up on the U.S. news, and it appears that there is a major migration of Africans trying to enter Europe...and ultimately the U.K. It seems that the US is not alone in having illegal immigrant problems.

Same problem in the UK as you have in the US.

We have made our country too attractive to them and our wishy washy politicians won't stand up and be counted.

No objection to genuine asylum seeker but by far the majority are just economic migrants, simply seeking better wages and a better lifestyle without spending fifty lean years working towards it.

Oh I have plenty to say on this subject but I'm not going to start, or I'll never shut up...and I'm serious!!

Unfortunately the illegal immigrants are asylum seekers who are leaving horrible war zones and places where they will likely be killed or die of disease or starvation. They have risked their lives to arrive on the shores of western countries who can't send them back (too expensive anyway). They connect with their refugee groups and somehow find their way to other European countries and are now even entering the UK (the very idea!).

Of course people who live in those countries will resent the immigrants because it means they will have to pay a bit more tax. This has always been the case with all immigration waves, especially after WWII. The people who are already there don't want the new comers, no matter who they are, the the established residents hate immigrants. It is a fact of life. It shows how territorial, greedy and selfish humans are and unable to share even with those who are the most vulnerable and needy.

The world is a mess, overpopulated, rife with war and violence. We need to share resources and move over to help those in need, as others have moved over and helped us in the past (even if it was our great grandparents).

I think there was a fatality at or near the tunnel as well. I saw Spain had to clamp down over the last year or two. European countries are much smaller than the US many with fewer resources. Unchecked/unbridled immigration is bad any where.

Technology which many of the migrants have access to reduces patience to do things the legal way in an orderly fashion. Bureaucracies came about for a reason besides political power & employment. A process keeps things under control. Word gets out/back that a comrade made it and didn't wind up in jail or deported triggers a frenzy/mass exodus. The European countries seem not to play pc games with issues like this. They don't like line cutters either.

Merkel makes tough but accurate call.

I remember seeing this a few weeks ago and surprised that no one posted here but German Chancellor Angela Merkel told an immigrant they couldn't stay-to their face. She made the tough but accurate call. You know what it might not have the desired thing to do or say but sometimes people need to here the truth. The girl might have been upset then but would be flat out angry if the written or implied promise of a better place didn't work out.

To top it off I believe that immigrant got to stay after the pity party she got online in particular.

A German MP from Angela Merkel’s party has put his money where his mouth is by welcoming two asylum seekers into his home – and urged fellow citizens to do the same.

Martin Patzelt, a member of the Christian Democratic Party (CDU) and advocate of more humane refugee policies, now shares his house with two men who have fled from Eritrea.

But the MP's calls for Germans to take in refugees has seen him receive death threats amid increasing tensions in Germany over immigration.

The two new housemates, Haben, 19, and Awet, 24, live in the attic level of the home Mr Patzelt shares with his wife Katharina in the village of Briesen, Brandenburg.

Mr Patzelt and his wife started chatting with the two men at the local church and invited them to dinner. The two refugees later asked whether they could move in with them.

Just think how much money would be freed if stellar CEO's were not paid millions a year blus bonuses, factor in the insane tax exemptions/overseas dodges, of the giant corporations, and the super rich. This is commonplace amongst western countries, regardless of the obvious negative repercusssions for the little people such as you and I. Can anyone spell greed? Can anyone spell ostrich? By all means, reject the poor, the needy, the asylum-seeking refugees, who have the audacity to wish to taint the lives of the self-satisfied, people of countries not war-torn, not starving, not proponents (outwardly) of sanctioned torture/disappearances. How rude to be alive when no one wants you! History is rife with the hostility/prejudice/violence/murder/exploitation visited on immigrants, initially viewed as a plague upon the land, who later proved to be valuable additions to the populace. Remember the Algerians who bled for La Belle France? The Gurkhas who did the same for Great Britain? Many of them became/were immigrants. As a child of immigrants--as is every Canadian who is not First People in origin, I am appalled and ashamed at how childish, arrogant, greedy, and cruel human beings remain. Angela
Merkel, shame!!! Send the Palestinians back to Gaza, we all know they deserve it!!!!!

Bee, your post made me weep, good for him! Death threats, Indeed! Why am I not surprised? This man is a true Christian, while so many others pay lip service--providing it does not inconvenience them, or heaven forbid, cost them MONEY!

The EU rules state that illegal immigrants should make their case to stay with the first EU country that they come to, however they are massing at Calais trying to enter the UK instead of applying to France, when they are already there!
The French should be investigating their claims and processing their applications in Calais, not allowing them to break through into the tunnels to get on trains or hiding in the backs of lorries waiting at the port.
I think that at last, that is what they are starting to do.We are a small country and are overstretched already in many areas with both EU legally living and working here, asylum seekers both genuine and bogus and other economic migrants.

I understand the refugees land in Italy or France, however, those countries are claim to be full and have made their rules are rather lax on purpose, in order to let the refugees slip through to other countries. They can't deport them because it would be too costly, so they 'let' them disappear to wherever they can find a place to live. I agree that the UK is small and maybe overstretched in the big southern warmer cities. But I see lots of open land in the big estates owned by the very wealthy, everywhere - UK, Europe, U.S. In fact there is lots of actual physical 'room' for them, so what is the real problem?

It's not simply to do with land whether or not land was available to build on Cookie, we're stretched to breaking point with our hospitals and schools. We're a tiny Island compared to France Italy, Germany and Spain...we can't cope. The whole of the Uk would fit inside oregon...we have 64 million people living here...Oregon has 3.5 million...just to give you the idea of the size comparison..

The UK is only 2/3rds the size of Germany... Italy is a 5th bigger than us... france is over twice the size of us... Spain also double our size with a lot less population...Netherlands and Denmark also almost twice our size ...

I understand what your saying, holly, that the infrastructure will be stressed. Scandinavian countries are out, although their doors are open, its too cold. I wonder why they have decided to head for the UK in the first place though. Heading east is out, heading north is out, Spain probably won't take them. They really don't seem to have much choice. I guess its watch and see what happens.

Once a migrant reaches the UK there are several things that can happen:

  • If they are found at the border they can be handed over to the French authorities
  • Once any criminal investigation has taken place the individual is passed to Immigration Enforcement officials who assess their personal circumstances
  • If they are deemed to be in the UK illegally but do not claim asylum the Home Office will serve them with a removal notice
  • Either way they could be detained until that happens

The UK actually ranks 7th out of 28 EU member states, the latest figures show.
Germany topped the table with 97, 640 new applications between January and April this year.
This was followed by Hungary, France, Italy, Sweden and Austria.

Yes but that's legals, those who have been granted refugee status. Our problems is with illegals, and with EU citizens who have free right of access all areas and all facilities.

It sounds like the U.S. and Europe share many of the same problems with these illegal immigrants. Short of building a 20 foot tall fence, topped with razor wire, around the entire nation, this is a problem that is only going to continue, and probably get worse. The ultimate answers probably lie with these 3rd world nations taking action to give their own people a decent life...not too likely, given their histories.

Exactly. Old axiom- Give a man a fish he will eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he will eat for ever. Where the heck is the UN or WHO in these countries. I saw the other day where the UN actually wants to inspect some US prisons and yet seem to be doing nothing in many of these third world countries pumping out immigrants by the tens of thousands.

Yeah...the UN....a bunch of goofballs sitting around "Talking" about problems....kind of like our Congress. Prisons in the U.S. are like country clubs compared to some nations...and even the poorest people in the U.S. and Europe live like kings compared to what some of the poor in these 3rd world nations have to contend with.

"Short of building a 20 foot tall fence, topped with razor wire, around the entire nation,"

If a 22 mile wide and 207 foot deep moat (the English Channel) doesn't do it, then a puny fence has no chance!

I am just thankful that I haven't been in that position to risk my life to escape from a country and hopefully enter another where I will be safe.

According to the news, they are stacking up at the Calais entrance to the Tunnel, and trying to hop on any vehicles they can to get into the U.K. If that's whats happening, it would seem that the French could be rounding them up.

Many of these countries have to learn about birth control. Far to many kids.
