It’s reported that the driver obtained his CDL in California. He couldn’t speak English, which is 1 of the qualifications to receive a license. The driver will be extradited back to Florida for trial. At the time of the accident, he was attempting to make an illegal U-turn on the Pike.

Setting aside the illegal turn he did what many other drivers do and that fail to account for a safe stopping distance. Too many think one just hits their brake and the stop is comlete. I see with tailgaters in particular.

But this was a highway. He had to know a car going 60 mph would need well over 100 ft to stop. Or the heavier and faster the vehicle might require more. That all should have been part of his training especially for a cdl

It was a tragic event and it does sound like the man should not have had a CDL but it sickens me the way the governor and lieutenant governor of Florida are piling on and using this as a photo op to promote their agenda.

Apparently all you need is one anecdotal incident of a certain demographic committing a crime and you can extrapolate that out to mean that all members of that demographic are criminals.

I never needed any special training to know what a safe following distance is. The problem I have is that every time I leave a safe distance between me and the vehicle in front of me some yayhoo takes that as an invitation to slide in there.

People do kill others on the roads. No argument there, but how stupid does a person driving an 18-wheeler have to be to attempt making a u-turn on a turnpike? I don’t think there is a low enough IQ number to support the stupidity.

I believe there is a pretty heavy fine for making a u-turn on the turnpike. From my home in Virginia at that time, I drove north to Pennsylvania to get on their turnpike to drive to Pittsburgh for a Steeler’s game and got a ticket for speeding. I was going 88 in a 70 zone and it cost me $305.

I had driver training with any job where one stood a chance of even having to drive their car somewhere stopping distance is usually a covered topic albeit short and generic. Same for those who have to take driving classes for a dui, too many points, insurance reductions etc.

That u-turn must used up both shoulders of the road as well leaving the van with no out.

Sadly this wouldn't the first stupid thing done on a highway.

When people miss exits I've seen them stop and try to back up as I've seen other stop a lane or two over waiting to cross over to the exit-with a vehicle full passengers including kids.

The Democrats aren’t pure of heart either!

Imagine how much they could accomplish if they worked together on something important for Americans without fussing about party affiliation.

Wow! An "Illegal"? Say it ain't so.

I just can't remember the last time I heard of a "Legal" killing someone in an accident! 🤷‍♂️

However, if the illegal wouldn’t have came here illegally, it’s highly probable these three people would still be alive. I doubt if any professional truck driver here in the U.S. would even consider crossing the median on a turnpike. When I saw this on CNN, the reporter stated the driver showed no remorse and supposedly told the police that he did nothing wrong.

This driver could not speak English or recognize road signs.

That highly reductive though. I mean, it's like saying, if there was no idea of a God, likely millions would be alive today. It's simplistic, and the conclusion is something we could never know. Still, Americans kill other Americans much more frequently. I wouldn't draw too many conclusions from that.

This was totally an “accident” that never should have happened, and would not have happened if the driver could read and speak the English language.
He has been here for over a year now, and was licensed by both California and Washington state, even though he could not pass the CDL test. And was then hired by a trucking company, who probably was aware of this and hired him anyway.

He was in the far right lane and made a left hand turn across the left lane of the highway and then into the dividing median that is between the lanes going each way, so it was not at any kind of designated turning area.
He literally turned in front of the minivan that was in the left hand lane, cutting the vehicle off and sending the car right under the trailer of the semi, killing everyone in the car.
If you watch the video, you can see he is standing there and not concerned about the deaths he caused at all.

This same driver tried to take his loaded semi across a rural bridge with a weight limit of 6,000 lbs, and it caused the whole bridge to collapse into the river, so another accident caused because he could not read the road signs, but fortunately, no one else was hurt in that accident.

This is certainly not the only time this has happened, and the regular truck drivers are probably the most upset by this because they are out on the road all the time, and more apt to become involved when one of these accidents occur. This is another one caused by a foreign driver, and there were several cars as well as several semi-trucks involved in this crash.

This is more about how he obtained his license, how the system broke down. IMO those that allowed this man to have a CDL license should be investigated.

I think he drove for 3 years before this accident. In good conscience is it right to blame the man for wanting to earn a living? I'm more inclined to blame the people that made it possible.
