I recently quit DoorDash and UberEats so I no longer needed my smartphone. I changed my banking info to the wrong account number and closed both accounts then deleted the apps. I deleted my Gmail and Google accounts. Dropped the second phone line and it costs me $10 a month for unlimited calls/texts and 2 GB of data. All of the two-step verification just to accomplish this was enough to make me wanna puke.

I then successfully degoogled my Android smartphone completely and it works perfectly. I might use it as a daily driver, if that becomes a burden I'll use my flip phone.

I have no Google, Apple, Amazon, Samsung, Microsoft, Facebook, YouTube or any tech accounts whatsoever. Like I said, an outcast from society. I just can't see how I can possibly function or even survive :ROFLMAO:

I would dearly like to know how you stripped your phone of all those annoyances. I'd do the same to my laptop as well.
 
The Android operating system has been taken over and corrupted by Google. Google does not make profit by selling expensive hardware like Apple or Samsung, they are all about advertising. This is why they are extremely aggressive with data collection.

I use ADB tools in Linux to strip apps out of a connected Android device.
It requires enabling developer options and then turning on USB debugging.

Some devices are locked and this doesn't always work.

I've often said I was born 100 years too late and the kind of things you described sound appealing to me. Well... I should say to a certain degree because there *are* things in the modern world that are of high value to me. One example would be the washer. Not quite ready to beat clothing on a rock down by the ol' mill stream yet. šŸ˜

Interesting but why?

I do my best to keep up with technology and select the options that have value to me.

Definitely do what feels right for you and your situation but it feels more like you are a rebel without a cause than an outcast to me.

Iā€™m glad that you ultimately chose to remain a member of SF and that you still feel some value or sense of connection to our little group.

Please, keep us posted on your new quieter less complicated life.

I agree, Aunt Bea, yes there are annoying things about all the things mentioned, but to me the good outweighs the bad.
 
I am beginning to find out about Google, or should
I say the new version, of Google!

My TV set, is an Android TV, I bought it a couple of
years ago, it was a very low price, on Amazon, until
Friday, all was normal, I was watching a recorded
programme from my BT/EE TV box and the TV set
was just a monitor, suddenly, I got an advert for a
shop somewhere in Alabama, think, I couldn't get
rid of it, by using the box remote, so I tried the TV
remote and got rid, with that one, then it came back,
on the other side of the screen, this went on for
maybe half an hour, when I got a message, it told
me that my TV was set at "Shop", I didn't set it, I
don't know how, anyway, it also told me how to
change the setting, which I did and all is well now.
Google must have changed the setting.

@outlander I would do the same as you if I were on my own, my husband is significantly younger so he is waiting for retirement to cut off everything but a simple phone. We are very much looking forward to going into that (what I consider into a ā€˜real lifeā€™). By then we hope to be settled in a home in a village where usually you can get all you need near by and help enough if we need it without internet!

In the uk many of lived through that already...beating the washing on a rock scenario... ( well washing clothes on a washboard, and feeding the heavy wet clothes through a mangle).. and have absolutely no desire to return to that...:D

I would like to do all of that with my android phone. I don't do DoorDash/UberEats, no banking apps, no gmail (I use hotmail but not much), none of those others you mention. I do use their websites by typing in the URL, but no apps. I also use google maps now and then, and the weather app ? that came on the phone.

Can your android still be used for texts?

Am seriously considering a flip phone.

Not considering the flip phone but the rest of what you listed is true for my phone. The only apps I use are maps and search. No other apps on my phone that weren't preloaded and many of those I got rid of.
 
Some folks have "all or nothing" personality. Guilty here, but not with computers and the WWW. I stay careful but sometimes I know I am taking a chance to be hood winked. But I also am 73 1/2 and don't give a "penny." :)
 
I use what's necessary and ignore what isn't. I update and restart my phone once a week. Sometimes games install automatically and I promptly uninstall them as soon as I see them.
 
A degoogled Android phone texts as normal, there are many third party apps for this.

Waze is a popular alternative to Google Maps for gps navigation.

A flip phone supports texting, but uses a T9 keyboard and physical buttons vs Qwerty keyboard and touchscreen. Some flip phones have predictive texting and a few even have voice to text. T9 texting is a learned skill that requires practice, but there was a time all cell phones used this before Android smartphones took over.

While I find more simplistic digital life appealing, this is more about protecting privacy. When I mention the "modern world" it is a reference to when everyone's life became dependent on smartphone technology and willingly gave away privacy for perceived convenience.

I do embrace electricity and washing machines :ROFLMAO:
 
I enjoy the benefits from my smartphone and other devices, so I I definitely would not be giving them up unless necessary. However, I have an iPhone and use only Apple devices, so I do not get all the problems that people have mentioned having with google or android.
My Apple Watch monitors all my health information for me, and sends it to my iPhone, so I can keep track of my heart, lungs, exercise, and all of the information about my health that is important to me.

I have never used DoorDash, or any of the delivery services like that, I make food at home. I do have Walmart+ and they deliver groceries, but that is another benefit that I enjoy, and something I would miss if I didnā€™t have it.
My Apple Watch is also like an emergency medallion, because if i fell or passed out, it would call for help for me, and the GPS would tell emergency people right where i am at.

So, with all the benefits, and no complications with my devices, I am really glad to have them, and not going to get rid of any , for sure !

I have to say everything else aside..Waze is sooo much better than Google Maps...

I should have posted something like this in one of the "biggest pet peeves" threads. I always uninstall them right away, too.

there should be a setting somewhere on your phone to not allow those to auto install. you may have to do a google search for it.

none of us died back in the day from not having a smart phone. i would go offline but it has become a necessity in my life since i live alone and have no vehicle.
