I'm glad newer appliances don't last long!

Oh dear, my phone (landline) is still in good working order, had it since 1968, it's one of those finger dial contraptions.
The radio is so old that it was called a wireless when it was new. It was grandmother's originally, runs on valves.
My record player (jukebox) also runs on valves, I bought that restored. My wristwatch is a manual wind-up type, had that over fifty years.
The old MG is seventy-six years young and my wife's VW Golf is over twenty-five years old. And I am older than all of them.

When I was searching for a new water softener, the choices for the controls are wifi or "dinosaur buttons". Needless to say, I got one with dinosaur buttons. I wish they had new cars with dinosaur buttons. I don't need anything that has the dash from the Millennium Falcon. Talk about distracted driving.

I had to pay special attention to my driving with the last car I bought while I was learning to "drive it." The learning phase is dangerous.

I wish I could find a toaster that toasts properly. One time it practically burns the toast, next time only one side toasts. Turn the bread around to toast the other side and then get burned toast again. It doesn't matter if I watch it like a hawk, it still happens.

Like others here, I have some of the same washing machine woes. Can't reach the bottom without standing on my head, not enough water, needs 2 rinses, etc. I can't wait til it dies a natural death and I buy a commercial grade Speed Queen. If it's good enough for hundreds of thousands laundromats, it's good enough for me! It will be worth the price.

this is what's making me a little concerned about buying a new car..which is what I've been considering for a while... I just don't want to have to learn a whole new bunch of stuff just to be able to drive. My daughter 's car a Toyota RAV 4 Hybrid, has every button and gadget in it you can think of.. she takes it all in her stride.. but I'm too old to learn all that.. and further I don't want to... I just want a car to take me from A to B..i n relative Ease and comfort..

This kind of brings to mind my experience with online banking. Cutting a long story short, the bank decided in its infinite wisdom to switch to an authentication method that meant you had to own a Smartphone (cell phone). Their app is the only way to generate the necessary code. It's a real pain, because honestly I don't have any use for a cell phone at this time in my life. Still, needs must....

that wouldn't work because the switches for the slots on the left which weren't working just wouldn't stay down... anyway it's immaterial..I binned it... and my new one arrived a couple of hours ago...let's see how long this one lasts..

I've taken the label off since I took the photo...(y)
I keep saying I'm going to get a new one but as long as this old timey one works I'll keep it.

If When we have to replace the stove or dishwasher in the near future, I’m debating the amount we should spend. Just never know how many more years we’ll be in this house. Don’t want to over spend.

I know your frustrations. I was given a 4 slot toaster a few years ago and the bread sizes today won't even fit into it. Not only that, when the slices pop up only one side is toasted. Grhhh!!!
Try using a toaster oven or counter top oven. The toast lays flat on the rack and toasts great on both sides with any size slice. Have had it for years and we make toast nearly every day in it.

I should mention the other appliances I've bought in recent times...the clothes dryer has been with us probably 6 or 7 years, it's a Kenmore, bought it at the Sears store directly. It has simple controls- that's a plus. On the negative side, the timer has the following settings: Less, Normal, More and Auto for drying.

If you put it on Auto you'll waste 40 minutes of electricity(and propane) and the clothes will still be damp. On More and on Normal settings the clothes will absolutely be BBQ'd, and wrinkled to death! Of course, on "Less" setting the clothes will be damp. So, in order to get the clothes DRY and not BBQ'd I have to eyeball a halfway setting between Normal and Less. shrug.gif

Another appliance that we bought just last year is our Whirlpool refrigerator, simple, has top freezer compartment. No problems at all, didn't need Bluetooth or WIFI, just a place to keep food cold. (y) The only drawback is that it didn't come with a built-in ice-maker. None of the top freezer fridges come with built -in ice-maker, just the side-by-sides, with I loathe.

I have the same dryer. I put it on auto and when the dial gets to "less dry" I turn it to 20 minutes (or 10 depending on size/weight of load)
That usually does it.
Ice makers are the #1 service call so you're better off to make ice.

I searched for a built-in ice-maker kit for this fridge, most manufacturers adhere to a "universal" design for built-ins, but Whirlpool doesn't, and I don't want the hassle of having to re-engineer my fridge for an ice-maker that won't just "drop in" install. I bought ice trays as one solution, but I also bought this counter-top ice-maker. It makes great ice, but I think it's design life is going to be only a couple years.

Which washer is best front load or top load
I didn't watch the video, but I think top loaders are best for the following reasons:
1. Top loaders less expensive to buy than front loaders
2. Top loaders [generally] require less maintenance than front loaders
3. Top loaders are less expensive to use, than front loaders
4. Top loaders don't get that foul odor like front loaders.

The general consensus seems to be that the front loader is better overall...

Several years ago there was an article in Consumer Reports that listed the pros & cons of top loaders and front loaders. Based on that information, plus my experience with repairing commercial front loaders, I prefer top loaders.

Here's a fairly recent CR article: 5 Things to Know About Front-Load Washers. It negates one of my arguments- "3. Top loaders are less expensive to use, than front loaders", but the article affirms that front loaders are generally more expensive to buy,and that they require more maintenance. Also mentioned was the odor issue, due to mold, which seems to be endemic to front loader construction.

Top loaders are a very rare beast in the UK... they were a thing when we were kids.. and our mothers had them, but almost everyone owns a front loader in the UK for the last 40 years :)
