I'm Still Here

I have been reading posts here and hope to find a niche where I can fit in. I'm in my 70s and have lost all my longtime friends, most of my relatives and 2 sons. This is not what I expected at this age. I do have 2 dogs and 2 cats that keep me busy so I am not alone. I have many interests: my son, 2 granddaughters and 7 great grandchildren, genealogy, history, kayaking, Christmas decorating, vintage music and movies and, currently, getting rid of a lifetime collection of stuff. I have long wanted to go home to the small midwestern town I left more than 50 years ago and it's time to make it happen. My health is good and I believe I could have 15-20 years left if I'm lucky. I drive too fast, eat lots of dark chocolate, enjoy afternoon tea and love to hear about other people's lives, so I won't be bored in my last years.

I have been writing my life stories for more than 40 years, often in the middle of the night because of insomnia. I believe everyone has a story to tell and encourage everyone to write their own life story because no one knows your life better than you do. If you write it, you can leave out the dumb mistakes you made and concentrate on the fun times and accomplishments. I still have one more story to write and that is my own. Then the lights will dim and I can fade into the history that I love.

Hi paperback writer
A great introduction !!!
and also a Great song aka Beatles

Welcome to SF from the beautiful county Devon in the UK

Like Holly I’m curious where you call home now and where abouts you’re thinking of moving back to. Be as approximate/vague as you like. For example I say I’m from the eastern side of the San Francisco Bay. Close enough, I think. Anyhow welcome from here.

There is a feature here where you can open a thread in the diary section. I discovered that by coming across posts by Gary whose retirement dream centered on constructing his own cabin in the i Oregon woods and there is another I’ve found by a nice gal with a pet bunny, @katlupe. I just added to my own about my garden this morning. Maybe you’d enjoy starting one too.

Welcome, you sound like an interesting lady! I too am in my 70's so I can relate. I live in the Midwest, and I grew up in the mountains of Colorado. I have tried a couple of times to capture my life in writing, primarily for my kids and grandchildren to read after I am gone. But I don't get very far before I put it down and forget to come back to it. Maybe you will inspire me...

I lived in Silicon Valley for 7 years. Puerto Rico 2 years when I married a Navy man in the 60s. Now in NC. Want to go home to - drum roll - Iowa or maybe Kansas City. Not for most people, but my history is there and I want to be there too, even if it is only a few years more. Thanks for asking.

You are right about the song. Love the Beatles after all these years. I have a friend in the UK that I correspond with. She was a cousin to one of my childhood best friends and when my friend died several years ago, I inherited her cousin. Kind of a nice way to stay in touch.
