I got my taxes filed, small [fed] refund [approx $800] this year [first one in quite a while] . So the check arrives & it's for , around three times as much...humm? I call every IRS number that even 'looked' like it might get there.....nothing. OK, so I deposit it. Later that same month I get another one [same amount] in the mail...hummm this ain't good . Same thing, hit the phone , same result. So deposit it as well.

Now at this point , I just know the wheels are going to fall off this wagon....oh-well see what happens?

Well today it happened .....large envelope , very official looking & reading letter basically saying we want it back..LOL!! No explanation...just a copy of both checks , and a letter explaining that . If I did not receive them?....fill out this form. If i did receive them , and cash/deposit them....return the same amount in 30 days or less.

So, guess I'll send a check tomorrow.....might even use a bank counter check.

Anyone ever experience this ??

Well it really won't 'cost' me money...as the money never was mine really. BTW I forgot to mention that I never did get my original $800 refund. After I make things right [I hope] ? If I do not receive [that] within a month? I am going to contact an attorney . I have copies of everything.

Reminds me of the Monopoly Community Chest card. Bank error in your favor-collect $200. Except the Monopoly bank never seemed to balance its books and ask for the money to be returned.
If it were me I'd use a regular personal check so that there would be a long lasting record of paying them back.

Did the letter mention the original $800 refund that they owe you?

Good point about the check.....On the original $800 ? No . as I told Keesha , if I do not receive that within a month, I am going to contact an attorney.

I’m not judging at all.
We get an accountant and get her to do it for us every year and our refund is usually about the same each time.
I’m very thankful for that because I really don’t like doing it.
I won’t comment on whether you need an attorney or not since I have no idea.

This was filed through a tax service. As for the attorney? I am only considering it due to no luck contacting the IRS. I'm sure a tax attorney has a way?

I'd check with the tax service first and see what they can do to help you get that refund. A tax attorney will cost you $$$.

Tax attorneys do not work cheap, and that's an understatement.

In thinking your situation over, RGP, you might want to make sure that the IRS checks were genuine. Scammers are everywhere and I do mean everywhere. Think about taking a beat before sending out any money. If it turns out that the checks were fraudulent and you're sending someone a check for $4800 out of your account? Well.. that could turn into a very sad story - $4800 worth of sad.

I'd talk to someone in the IRS before moving forward with this, using phone numbers you find on the IRS.gov website, not ones in the paperwork you were sent. Just a suggestion.

After I recovered enough from my stroke to return to work, I notified SS that I had and to discontinue the disability checks I was getting. They kept sending them and I kept documenting my calls to them. I finally set up a separate bank account for them as I knew they would finally ask for it back. They did and acted like I was trying to scam them. I sent them a check for $15,000 and a copy of my documented calls trying to get them to stop the payments. I sent it certified so I would have proof they got it. That shows you what a mess they have there. People told me I should not have said anything but it was not mine and it was a big help when I could not work. It is no telling how much of that is happening!

Thanks for the extra thought, however I am trying to take the extra precautions you mention......if I could get someone to answer the damn phone. I have talked to several machines....but so far no people, since the first call to the tax service, and she was no help.
I'm pretty sure that it is legit....8X11 envelope , double copy of everything , including the checks both sides , showing my endorsement etc.

I'll keep trying the numbers provided..as well as those shown on the web-site.....leave additional messages ....hope I get a human here sometime?

As you noted, I still do not know the status of actual refund I am entitled to !? And this is July for pete's sake.

I received two refund checks from the IRS about 40 years ago. I called and asked what to do about the extra one. They said to wait until they contacted me about it. So I just sat on the check, didn't cash it, and sat and sat and sat. Every month I'd call and ask about check. Same response every time.

After a year, I put it in an envelope, attached a letter and sent it back. Never heard another thing. I still wonder if they would have ever caught it.

Early 80s one of my hubbys coworkers and his wife were do a refund of,ball park,240.00,a check came in the amount of 2400.00,the wife who was the money manager of the household deposited it into an interest bearing savings account, remember those???
Long story short, they found their error about a year later and demanded their money back with interest, they returned the original amount, called it good and the matter stayed resolved.

Same here, Keesha, except that one of our daughters does our taxes. She's been doing them for the past 10-15 years and as in your case, the amount is pretty much the same each year.

Here's the latest & I hope the last...

Believe it or not, the IRS returned my call. The short version is .......Block made a mistake on my return, causing me to overpay for the year. They {IRS} refunded me the mistake amount . Then, I did not deposit it quickly enough.....so they sent another check.

IRS lady said just return the amount of one of the checks...and we're all square.

I started going to Block, when the electronic filing became mandatory...Perhaps I'll start doing my own again?

What a happy ending this is! Thanks for letting us know how it turned out.
