In the USA about 12 percent of Police officers are women. In Canada it's 23 percent.

Pennsylvania is making an effort to get to 30% females by 2030.

Domestic situations can be very dangerous. We had 3 police officers killed in York County last September or October answering to a domestic situation. Three police officers in one call. The shooter was waiting for the local cops to show up. A PSP Trooper killed the shooter.
Yes, I remember that, and I hear you on the danger of domestic disputes. I guess I was thinking more of interventions before things hit crisis stage.

Bottom line @jimintoronto , if more women applied for the job of Law Enforcement Officer, there would be more female law enforcement officers. It's as simple as that.

Female officers are a must in some situations, such as when a female in custody has to be searched, when a subject will only speak to a female, or a suspect will only negotiate with a female.

However, there are also specific situations that require a female officer be accompanied by a male officer when, normally, only a single officer would be needed. That's a departmental policy that increases costs, and it varies.

I don’t disagree with you, but just like what is being debated now with sports and not allowing genetic males turning into transgenders participating with genetic females, the argument is that females are not as strong as males, so there is a distinct advantage.

If a female is sent out on a call that may be a domestic issue or a felony in progress, a male is generally sent as a backup. I rode with a new female PSP Trooper that was only 5 feet 3 inches. She did well, but there were no physical encounters. Our female Cadets are taught martial arts just like our male Cadets.
There's been a lot of discrimination in PD in area I lived in nearby for many years, but they never went THAT far!!!

I never forgot my first encounter with a female Police officer.. We were teens.. and we'd got involved in a bit of an afray... something and nothing...and ultimately we didn't get charged with anything.... but the police arrested all of us.. a big group...

My sister who was just 14 at the time was standing next to me and my brother and others as we got searched.. of course we'd never been arrested or searched before and we were all complying with orders in a line ... .. and this female officer stuck her hand into my sister bra.. my 14 year old sister said''take your hand out of my bra''.. and the Female officer drew back her hand, and hit my sister full force in the face !!:mad:

That's definitely horrible!!!
There'll always be those who 'throw their weight around' and mistreat citizens just because they can. And it makes the majority who do their jobs correctly look bad in comparison. Individuals like you described should have been reported and FIRED.

yes... but back in the day..we just accepted what was dealt to us... we'd grown up taking corporal punishment from teachers...as well.. even tho' we knew it was wrong.. there was no-one who would take our side against the police

if it happened today however it would be very different..

Unfortunately there are still those who still do not understand that kids/children are People..

My overall reaction- which I'd say in person if it ever came up- is "Pick on somebody your own size, you dam*ed bullies!" because that's what they are, and that's all they are. 😔

What would you say about an Officer who was called to an attempted suicide who was 14.
She made it through it and that Officer stopped one day a week on his shift to sit on the front porch
and check in with her and see how she was doing on his lunch break. He asked her each time if she
wanted him to stop by until finally she said "Thank you, I think I am fine now and Thank You for caring"
All they really all bullies?

If, because of a word I used, you're directing your post to me, read my previous posts.. MOST officers do their jobs, and often go above-and-beyond.. my last post was directed to HollyDolly and the situation she described.

Thank you for clarifying it, this last sentence did hit me very wrong Pick on somebody your own size, you dam*ed bullies!" because that's what they are, and that's all they are. 😔 because I read it as meaning ALL, My son was that Officer I spoke about and I had went to a Community BBQ for the Police, EMT's and Fire Dept and the father of that girl found my son and was thanking my son for
his compassion and helping his daughter get past it. So that sentence I read as a generalization of meaning ALL police. Maybe it was the Mom in me, maybe it could have been phrased better so it would point out Officers like the one holly mentioned were bullies. But thank you for getting my BP up I needed a jolt anyway today.

Well, actually, the last post she made was mainly referring to school teachers.. but I stand by what I said regardless of who anyone is- teachers, police, or anyone else.

And, like I said, MOST are good people who do their jobs correctly, and even go beyond what they're required to do.. including a member of my family.

"Right on!" to your son for doing the right thing, too.

Still surprised that dry humor is way over some people's heads. I could write that the Earth is flat and some people would flip out.
As much as I dislike 'pop-psych,' making insulting comments and then calling it a joke is known as 'gaslighting.'

This is a very familiar theme with Jim. Many of his threads and posts pit the US against Canada, with Canada always being portrayed as tiresome as shining example and the US as the patheticalso-ran.

Most Americans love our neighbors to the north, me included. I'm not sure why Jim is so insecure about his country but repeatedly seeing us in competition is tiresome.
Agreed and it’s as tiresome as a one-trick pony

Many will disagree with me, but I just do not think the average female is a suitable candidate for police work - or fire fighting work.

Agree 100 %..... my ex was a firefighter, and he and the other guys hated having women on their watch ! they were a liability they didn't have the strength needed physically or emotionally..

It's certainly clear many individuals here think women are wimps, tramps, or both..
to say that's insulting is an understatement.

(and I'm not going to waste time to see how many LOLs and snide remarks come from this)

I'm definitely not a wimp....much less a tramp.....

I am very strong... but I know my physical limitations as a woman.....

My DIL began with Fire Dept, then after getting married and having a baby she could not pass the physical exam
to save her life. So she went to EMT. Which turned out well because Son was not liking her wanting to be away
from home for days at a time with a new baby home. Stuff happens to women through the years too.
