Instant reactions to certain foods?

I can't do spicy food foods and sometimes I haven't realized the heat potential of some
foods or condiments and had some embarrassing reactions in public.

When DH and I began dating he took me to a Chinese place. I hadn't tasted all that those places
have to offer so he encouraged me to try the mustard on an egg roll.

I bit into it and reflex took over. Heat hit my tongue, I began gasping, I took a drink, the drink intensified the heat,
I knocked the glass over when I jumped up, hit my head on a shelf holding plants behind me and he
is hysterically laughing and apologizing between laughs.

He always warned me after about the heat content in anything I hadn't tried after that.

Want to share some memories about food that hit you badly suddenly?

What "hit me" suddenly with food isn't heat or spiciness, but the first time I found out I couldn't eat MSG. Like your own story, it was a Chinese restaurant and I ended up in ER the next night. Not from anything serious, but by a huge hive breakout and I'd had no idea what caused it... didn't even know what MSG was at the time all those years ago.

I enjoy hot and spicy foods, so that's not an issue with me.

There are some foods that really turn me off, like beets, turnips, boiled okra with tomatoes, oatmeal, and Brussels sprouts when poorly prepared or undercooked. If I go to someone's home and they serve any of those, I can't even take a small portion to be polite.

I also cannot eat uncooked fish: such as sashimi, or sushi, or raw oysters. Fried oysters are okay.

My first time eating sushi had me picking up a good-sized chunk of Wasabi and popping it into my mouth.

I truly thought I was going to die. Then I was afraid I was going to live....

I also bit into what I thought was a tempura green bean in New Delhi. I never found out what it was, but they could have dropped it during a war and exploded an enemy munitions plant, which was what I thought i had in my mouth.

I enjoy spicy food but I don’t enjoy heat for heats sake.

Some of the Italian style pickled hot cherry peppers are intensely hot but they can be tamed by seeding them and stuffing them with meatball mix for a nice appetizer.

My worst encounter was with a dried Chinese red pepper that I didn’t pick out of an order of chicken with garlic sauce, extra spicy!!!🔥

When my son was about 14 we ate at a Chinese restaurant, he wanted and ordered the Kung Pao Chicken, I told him DO NOT eat the dried chilis, he did anyway...shrug.gif

For many years I have been complaing about the craze toward spicy means better, it doesn't, spice/heat should never over power the taste of the meal, unless the meal is rat meat. So that's what I have an instant reaction to, if it's spicy hot I'm not eating it.

Speaking of heat in foods I saw this the other day when buying birdseed, perfect example of things going to far.

All my life, whenever I've tried eating food with any amount of flavor (espec. an acidy flavor), I get a stinging sensation in my cheeks right in front of my ears. And then worse gastric distress follows. So I've just about quit eating food with any amount of flavor.
I can tell you what that is... that's you parotid gland which are the largest salivary glaands, which sit in the face right in front of your ears and when they become inflamed ( parotitis).. you get that horrible stinging sensation if you eat anything acidic.. not just fruit, but anything that might have acid in like bacon for example.

if it's really inflamed as mine was where my face swelled up really painfully everytime I ate anything they have to remove the gland surgically... but you have to be awake during the procedure. It was a horrendous experience, about 10 years ago.... because the facial nerves run through that gland ! :(

I honestly have been complaining about this for years. I can't eat anything spicy and they put spice in everything these days.. even desserts.. and chocolate... It drives me wild...

The hot pepper is to deter squirrels from the bird feeders. The squirrels can detect the red pepper where the birds don’t. You’ve probably never fed the birds only to have big fat squirrels eating all the food. They are a real nuisance and chase the birds away.
Just look at Medusas Birdie Buffet. She’s feeding the birds sunflower seeds with hot pepper and the birds love it, the squirrel? Not so much. lol 😂

just an fyi, i don't like spicy food either.

my food thing is the fact that for some reason i don't understand pineapple upside down cake makes me gag. i can eat cake with pineapple stuff on top np. the upside down cake almost makes me puke. lol!

Horseradish!
I never had it until I came in the USA.
A long time ago, I ordered smoked salmon as an appetizer in a restaurant in New Jersey. They served me the salmon with a little cup of what appeared to me to be chopped onions.
As I like chopped onions on my salmon, I put a good portion of the cup on my salmon and took a good bite!
Well, it was pure horseradish! 🤢🤮😵‍💫
Never again!

I was told the hot in it is supposed to deter squirrels, I passed it by also, seemed cruel to me.

Speaking of birds and hot pepper: my late sister had an African Grey parrot who liked to nibble on the woodwork. He had really done a job on one of her door facings.

I read somewhere to paint the wood with hot sauce to deter the chewing. So she got something really hot and painted the door facing. Unfortunately, he took one taste and fell in love. He spent days licking the hot sauce off before going back to the gnawing.

Oh, well....

I love spicy foods and always have. Oddly enough when I met my husband he hated spicy foods. Now 36 years later he loves them, maybe even more than I do. We eat buffalo wings, blackened haddock, jerk chicken, chilli, spicy pickles, Indian curry! We’re constantly expanding our food choices to include more spicy foods.

The food that turns me off is blueberries, those healthy little gems that people and society rave about.
I can not stand the mouth feel, their mushiness. Complete turn off. Now, I'll eat the little baby ones, they still have some firmness, but I'll skip the big round ones.

I can't eat blueberries unless they are in something creamy like yogurt or ice cream. With me its the acidity but I wouldn't like them squishy either.

Well goodness, maybe I will try a a small bag and see then. The squirrels and I have a go-round every few weeks when one gets
really determined. Thank you

Goodness, I have read a few of your posts about health or body issues, you've had your fair share I would think. I hope this year will be a good healthy one for you.
