Insurance Horror Story, With Bill of $898,984.57

Dignity Health stuck new mom with bill for preemie, until ProPublica asked questions

ProPublica may have saved a young family from financial ruin while illustrating the harsh realities of today's health insurance landscape. The story is about 30-year-old Lauren Bard, a nurse at a hospital in San Bernardino, Calif., who gave birth to a baby some three and a half months prematurely last year. Three days after the birth, Bard called Anthem Blue Cross, which administers her health plan, and added her daughter to her coverage. All was well, except for one problem: She was unaware of a technicality required by her employer, Dignity Health.

Wow, hooray for ProPublica! Dignity finally came through, but I wonder what ProPublica threatened them with to make them change their mind. I would have loved to be a fly on the wall!

Maybe I'm missing something in this, but what's wrong with Medicare for all, with the option of allowing private insurance to fill in the gaps? That's what I have now, and it works very well. My medical bills are usually zero, except for eye vision tests, which are not covered for some reason, but they're pretty cheap. And my dental coverage is crappy, better than nothing, but just barely.

But for everything else, I rely on Medicare and BC/BS. Why are people so afraid of Medicare for all? The all-important bogeyman of taxes, as usual?
