Interesting notes on wild birds

We have a lot of mourning doves nesting in our yard here in Colorado, love them. This is a Red Tailed Hawk from years ago in my back yard, found that not all of them actually have the red tail.

Those are the ones who keep yanking my pony tail trying to get my squirrel that is under my hat!!

Here in Central Florida we are spoiled by the presence of many birds.
We have the birds of prey (eagle and hawks), huge vultures, sandhill cranes, blue jays, red-winged blackbird, American white ibis, Carolina chickadee, tricolored heron, Florida scrub jay to name a few.
Our community has nature trails, lots of trees and lakes that attract a lot of wildlife. Our county gets many migrating birds as well. Some birds just get a rest and move on, some others stay for a little longer. I enjoy watching them.
In my yard, I attracted the hummingbirds by planting the bottlebrush trees.
Last spring, we got some mockingbirds that had babies and attacked me each time I got close to their nests to check on the babies. (One had fallen from the nest, I rescued it, it lived!)
We also have cormorants and ducks. Interestingly they don't seem to want to move even if they find themselves near a huge alligator!
A while back, I got a book on the birds of Florida to try to identify some of them. We have a neighbor that is very knowledgeable on birds and once in a while organizes nature walks through the community and I enjoy sharing her studies.
The county parks organize them as well, and every year we can participate in a bird count.

What a wonderful listing of the amazing variety of wild birds that you get in that area that is almost tropical.

Thank you for telling us about your area and the interest that you and others have, in your local nature bounty!

Home from hospital and rehab, now
I can once again, watch for wild birds out my window.

Today i enjoyed seeing some goldfinches in their duller winter plummage ,

As well as a few of the fore mentioned woodpeckers in above posts.

Downy woodpeckers, one male, with red spot on head, others without it.

I marvel at how clean all the wild birds appear to be, despite living outdoors in winter.
