Yep, it was a pretty big deal back in 2005. Couple of filters, some heat, and you could make your own fuel. Then, folks got wise and started charging for the oil, and large corporations started getting contracts with restaurants for the oil to re-sell and that pretty well squashed the concept of inexpensive homemade fuel.Very entertaining! When I lived in Chicago I recall hearing a story about one of the early advocates of using deep fryer oil to power diesel engines--now known as biodiesel. A man in Wisconsin set up a system in his garage and started going around collecting the used oil from restaurants. He mostly got his oil from Mexican restaurants. Wherever he drove it smelled like tacos. And no, I'm not joking.
