R.I.P. With Us In Spirit Only
I am sure none of us are dumb enough to go for it but in one day alone (yesterday) I received two telephone calls from "officer whatever" threatening me about "my case". If I didn't call him back yesterday it would have serious consequences. First of all the IRS are not in California (209-251-2637) most don't speak with a heavy British accent and the IRS NEVER calls and threatens. They do all their business by mail or certified mail. I suspect this is an offshore scam funneling their calls through the California number.

If I had more time and patience I'd mess with these cretins a bit before hanging up on them. I used to think who would be foolish enough to fall for something like this, but then it happened to my elderly inlaws several years ago. The old "grandma, this is Billy and I've been arrested and need bail, but please don't tell Mom" scam. They were so convinced it was our son, that they were about to send money via Western Union. Thankfully, the woman at Walmart cautioned them and smelled a scam.

If they didn't have success with some folks on these scams, they would give up. Wish there was a way to trace them back to the source.

I just recently put my landline phone back into the house. The next day I had the call from the IRS and not recognizing the number let it go to voice mail. Some foreign sounding person left the IRS message, I googled the number, a scam of course. Now six weeks later I have blocked twenty- five numbers on this landline of various robo calls. This phone allows 250 blocked calls, I will have that many soon at this rate. Five years ago when I had the landline I never got all these dumb calls. What is up with this?

They called me once a long time ago, said I owed back taxes (which I knew was BS), and if I didn't send them money a sheriff would come to my house, take away my car and home and arrest me. I let him go on and on until I couldn't take anymore, and told him off saying he's the one who's going to end up in jail, he's nothing but a scammer. Then I went to the website 800notes, looked up the number and saw a bunch of others with the same complaint, I posted mine there too.

Now that I am home most days, I marvel at the number of scam calls that come in some days. There's the "I'm calling from Windows", the "I have an arrest warrant", "solar power", and assorted other annoyances. Thank goodness for 1800notes to check these as they come in.

Down here we are no getting calls from an officer (?) stating that we did not show up for Jury Duty and the court has issued a fine, pay up or go to jail.

I have gotten those also and then I turned around and blocked them. I've been blocking numbers and some area codes for about 4 years now and the calls have really decreased to nearly none now. I LOVE IT!!!! I check my machine daily to see if it has blocked any and most days, it is none and I haven't gotten any new ones either on those days. So, there is hope! Give it time and keep blocking and yours will eventually get less.

This IRS scam has been around, in various forms, for years. There must be people dumb enough to fall for it, since it seems to continue. Lately, we have had an increase in solicitations for "helping wounded veterans"...from organizations I've never heard of. Usually, we don't pick up the phone when the Caller ID shows a number we don't recognize. However, when I do answer one of these calls, I ask them to send me a copy of their annual statement showing how much actually goes to the intended purpose, vs., how much is bled off for "administrative" charges. That is usually enough to get our number removed from their list.

I don't answer numbers I don't recognize, particularly from other area codes. If I do pick up and it's a scam (particularly purporting to be from the feds), I report the call and the number that shows up on my caller ID.

My new phone system tells me who is calling so I don't have to answer and tell these scammers to shove it any more. The "iRS" has been after me recently, too, as well as some warranty extension types...

Now I feel left out... No IRS calls.. But I have gotten the "This is Microsoft and we need you to log on to your computer" thing.. Could hardly understand what he was saying...

I put myself on the National No Call list, still got these calls, but very few. Since I dumped my land line I don't get any.

Will they be calling my cell phone now? They never did before.

1 ditto.gif..Been on the no call for about 4 years..No problem..Only few and far between on my cell and then I don't answer unknown numbers except when I am selling something and then those are local callers..

Quicksilver, I've gotten that "Microsoft" call also. The guy had such a thick accent that I could barely understand what he was saying. I think he said I was having a problem with my Windows. I hung up immediately; don't know why I answered the phone in the first place. But it did give me a chuckle; yeah, he really sounded like a Microsoft employee calling from WA state!

Yey! I just got my first IRS phone call! This was a recording telling me the IRS was about to file a law suit against me and I better call the number they gave..... which I didn't... I was tempted to so I could play with them, but decided to just hang up..
