Is AARP a good group to join?

I enjoyed my grandparent's AARP magazine that seemed to be geared towards people of average means.

Today it seems to be targeted towards well-to-do people that are in denial about their age.

It's probably still of some value if you are a member of the target demographics.

Why does it bother you so much that it is an automatic payment?

Checks are slowly going the way of the dodo bird. Several businesses that I normally trade at here have gone to not accepting checks. I asked "why" at a couple of them and was told that (1) checks are a hassle for them in general and (2) they've been stiffed way too many times by either bad checks or forged checks.

Banks protect their customers from having forged checks honored, but the business which accepts them has no protection. And bad checks are almost always impossible to collect on.

My car insurance is much cheaper with them. Also get a discount with consumer cell phone. I like the articles in the magazine. So I stay a member.

Ah yes, checks are going by the wayside, but I still use checks to pay bills as I do not want to give ANYONE the ability to withdraw money from my bank account aside from me. Some bills I can pay by credit card, which I have no objection to since it gives you a chance to make sure the bill is correct and before payment and since you have some protections with a credit card. However, once money is gone through automatic withdrawal or debit card, you may have a devil of a time getting it back if it is in error. And . . .as we all know companies do occasionally make errors and also cannot always prevent hiring unscrupulous people.

I've been an AARP member for a lotta years, rejoining annually after being hounded, yet wondering why I do so. They target you beginning when you turn 50, and the ads and promotions are an unwanted pain. They do seem to pitch to well-to-do people, and often feature aging celebrities on their magazine covers and in their articles. Occasionally being a member can net you a discount at motels when you travel and other marginal perks which might be worthwhile for some...

Been there! Done it! Don't want to do it no more! We have a magazine here in Canada called "Zoomer". I have been a member for a full year so have read 12 issues of it but would never go back. Sometimes, I find copies in doctor/dentist offices. For some reason they try to ignore that you are getting older. It's all about "zooming". You zoom here; you zoom there. The adds for expensive products like perfumes are a real drag. They advertise expensive cars & jewels too. Really! It seems to be geared to celebrity types that refuse to admit that they are aging. The magazines is published in Toronto. A magazine for the rich & super rich. I think it's rather silly. I know a lot senior in our condo complex & they feel the same as I do. I would rather read this Senior Forum. It's much closure to the real world than this silly Zoomer magazine.

I joined AARP in 2012 ,enjoyed the website until the adminstrators kept changing the format which upset many posters including me.Many people left,I should of,but didn't.In early 2017,I was really po'd when a long time poster{been at website longer than me} in the entertainment forum 'stole' my original idea made it her own.I publically told her how upset I was she denied it.The next thing I knew I got a private message from one of the adminstrators reprimanding me,couldn't believe it. I soon cancelled my membership, all personal stuff in my profile. A couple months later,I joined SF
The only good thing I got from AARP, discounts at Walgreens

I agree with Robert, I do not want anyone to have access to my checking account.
