Is anyone beginning to Prep?

We’d be ok for quite a while. We have enough food in our pantry downstairs. We have access to free fresh water down the road. We have a generator for heat and air conditioning. It runs our heat pump, microwave, fridge, well pump, most lights and an outlet downstairs.
We have about 20 lites of gas stored in containers. We have a Woodstove with plenty of dried wood. View attachment 489189View attachment 489190
I'm coming to your place. lol!!!

Modern nuclear weapons are vastly more destructive than the 15–20 kiloton bombs used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, with typical warheads today having yields of at least 100 kilotons to several megatons. A single modern weapon can destroy an entire city, causing millions of casualties, with a far greater radius of destruction, intense heat, and radioactive fallout compared to the 1945 attacks.

What would you do if WW3 broke out tomorrow?" My answer was simply: "die hopefully when the nukes hit." I would just want to be as close to the blasts as possible and be done with it. We could all be wiped out in a few hours if the warmongerers aren't bluffing. As someone who is used to modern standards such as indoor plumbing, running water, electricity, modern medicine, wifi, and safe food, I would not want to be a survivor.
I totally agree!

The only country I would worry about a nuclear hit from is North Korea.

The newest possibility from the other bullies is EMPs (Electric Magnetic Pulse). I don't know much about prepping for this... But the sudden shake from it will take many things out of action. We have plenty of weaponry in case of home attack, but really need to look into EMP more.

The biggest issue with the "Prepper" mentality is that they want to hoard everything they think they will need. For the real SHTF scenario you need to have your great great grandparents hand tools and mentality. Can you plant a garden, Can your own food, cook over a fire? Do you have a draw knife to make a new axe handle? I just came back from a guys trip where they were amazed at my homemade canned SPAM. Should the power grid go down would you be able to dig through your freezer and preserve what in there? We can easily manage 2-3 weeks before the hard work begins, but in that time people will be going crazy. We have weapons and reloading supplies... but of course that also makes us a target.
We both grew up around self-sustained family and have built on those skills we learned from generation before us. We have the luxury of modern technology that makes it easier but retained the old tools and skills.
Our biggest SHTF hoarding.... couple bags of rock salt.
In all honesty...if we'd got to the stage where we were 3 weeks in and the food had run out and the means to make food..or purify water... or have some kind of safe place to sleep... then I;d want the marauding gangs to just take me out of the world... I'm too old at 70 years old to want to try and survive by hunting and gathering..

I grew up very poor, I'm capable of cooking on a fire... but if it got to worse than that where I had to start thinking abut hunting for food.. and hiding from gangs..I'd just want to be gone from this earth.. I;d stand under the next bombing target

WHY???? Generally if the grid goes down, a cellphone is useless... After Helene we had no phone or power 9 days. Managed that time with 5 gallons of gas and limited generator use.
true but a solar charger would also charge batteries.... which most people would need for various things, noneless than flashlights

It depends how far away from the nuclear bomb you are located – the further the better. If it hits close to you, you are toast. If not, get inside your designated shelter to avoid any radioactive material outside. I think the preparation would only be adequate if you had a fallout shelter where you could safely stay for a minimum of 2 weeks with enough food, water.

Yes. I've watched Walking Dead. I fear the gangs too.
..but we're not talking about apocalyptic war resulting in being Nuked, with marauding mentaly challenged walking dead gangs ... I'm talking about being bombed out of the blue..like Ukraine for example..where ordinary people were going about their business, and were bombed out of their homes and out of their jobs and out of their beds..by Russia.....they weren't nuked just because they were at war... and just because the USA is at war with Iran doesn't mean if it comes to something more, that a Nuclear bomb will be dropped.. far more likely it will start like the Ukraine/Russian conflict

My mother used to say that when she died she only wanted to go one of 2 ways, that would in her sleep or have a nuclear bomb land on her head... she got her wish she died in her sleep.

Yes. I understand. I didn't mean gangs of zombies. I mean the ones that break in and take what you've prepped. Now I know that's TV.
I think neighbors and friends here would pull together but there is that fear.

I totally agree with all that. The duct tape can be substituted with a spool of twine, but it's a perfect list, imo.

I don't have any water stored, but I have several water filters. And they're easy to make if you have access to sand and charcoal.

I used to keep several 5-gallon buckets of water on hand, but you're advised to either dump it or use it and replace it every few years, and I got tired of doing that. You're also advised to add a little bleach to it. I think it was one or two tablespoons for every 5 gallons of water. That's probly a good thing to do.
I've also heard you're not supposed to store bottled water on concrete . I haven't looked into this... I should do to see if it's true.

Not doing anything special. Earthquake preparedness keeps us well stocked, as I've described in threads like
Do you have enough food in your house?.

This morning I ordered an extra case of dog food thanks to @Teacher Terry's comment. Between that and his dry food, Ozzy-dog would be set for at least a couple of months.

We have 90 gallons of fresh water on hand plus a backyard swimming pool, a very deep canned & dry foods pantry, full freezers with food that will last longer than a couple of days because they're heavily stocked with fruits, veggies and starches. All told, I might have a pound of frozen meat (that I've been gradually cooking and feeding to Ozzy) and a couple of pounds of shrimp.

Our RV's fridge can run on propane. The tanks are full, so anything needing refrigeration could be shuffled into that fridge/freezer.

The above said, if all hell breaks loose, having enough food and water will likely be the least of my concerns.
other than checking if family are alive.....I think if all hell breaks loose, food and water will be your ONLY concern...

2 car garage.... wish we had a basement.
In the Uk during WW2.. many people had basements in their houses, and could retreat to them during the bombings of our towns and cities.... today houses are built with no basements...

During the bombings while everyone retreated to their respective safe places, shelters, underground train stations, basements etc... my father who was a teenager.. said that as soon as the siren went off in the middle of the night , he just rolled out of his bed and rolled under it and continued to sleep, because he had work to go to in the morning and needed the sleep. he said if a bmb hd his name on it , it would have got him wherever he;d been hiding

I see I avoid a lot of stress by not watching the news. Why would there be a world wide war? Last I heard it was Ukraine vs Russia, and the continuation of years worth of Iran shooting missiles at Israel and Israel eventually retaliating. I guess people out in public were talking about US shooting at Iran.

So are we expecting China, India, and Europe to suddenly start shooting each other? Canada and Mexico shoot at USA? What are we prepping for exactly?

yes they are talking now about China & Russia coming to the aid of Iran against the USA... this is very serious .. the ex head of Nato said yesterday that this is the closest the world has ever come to WW3

Hunting? I'd eat dandelions. My parents ate mushrooms. They went on their honeymoon to Italy on a moped and they plucked mushrooms there.
I saw on youtube that a Greek pastor said that churches should get their own farms cause famin was coming and several people on youtube said that we have to hoard cause Joseph did that too. But then I thought: Ehhh Joseph made sure there was food for the whole country and other countries. Not just me me me.

What use is it if I hoard an insane amount of food for myself and you see your neighbours starving while stuffing your mouth full. Oh you have nothing? What a pity. Munch. If it's true wouldn't it make more sense to warn farmers and people in the government. Oh by the way I was looking it up online. Our government has a whole plan already. They said that we have to have enough for 3 days.

72 hours?... that's what our govt said... they have no more idea than you or I ?... look at the way Covid was handled... don't panic they said there will be food for everyone... there wasn't..shelves were stripped, and there was no deliveries for days at a time.

Only people who could queue up at a supermarket and get one carton of milk or one toilet roll doled out oneat a time. could have them. there was no hiome deliveries, people who were sick or disabled or without transport, went without.... and so if they don't stock up in preparation they'll be without any supplies in the event of a war breaking out...

Bay milk was almost entirely unavialable and was beinng sold at extortionate prices online..

Ask anyone in the US who suffered through Hurricane Katrina or Helene when their homes were blown apart.... if 72 hours supply was enough...it wasn't...

Believe me if you went to the homes of your govt members they'd be far more prepared for a war than they're telling you to be...

..

Governments have the right I think to commandeer a person's hoarded food to share. Not sure they ever do it tho.
AI Overview Yes, during World War II, people in the Netherlands and other occupied territories were forced to share food through a strict system of rationing and distribution. This was not a voluntary act of solidarity, but a forced measure imposed by the German occupiers to manage and control scarce supplies.

Here are the key aspects of this compulsory food sharing: Ration coupons: Almost all staple foods (bread, meat, butter, sugar, coffee) were rationed. People received ration cards and coupons with which they could buy a limited, equal amount of food. Without coupons, there was no food for sale. Compulsory Surrender (Requisitions): Farmers and producers were required to surrender their crops and livestock to the government, which then distributed them. Withholding food (black slaughter) was punishable and severely punished.

Objective of the Occupiers: The control of food was intended to supply the German troops and the population in the Third Reich, while the local population in the occupied territories received only the bare minimum necessary to survive. Fair Distribution?: Although the system was intended to distribute food "fairly," in practice it mainly led to general shortages and ultimately to the Hunger Winter (1944-1945), during which food rations fell far below the subsistence level. After the war, rationing remained in effect in the Netherlands for certain products well into the 1950s, as food was still scarce.
