Is it "PC", or common curtesy?????????

I would hate to be a public official, a boss, or a teacher these days. Even the ones with best intentions must feel like they are walking on eggshells all the time.

ah yes on arriving in HK for my first sojourn and job from UK - I was greeted by the head of dept whowas brit also who said " a world of advice davey - " somedays working in HK is like walking on eggshell" - gee whiz I cracked a lot of eggs!

Ah now we are getting somewhere - an expert - hi chic I am so tempted to say something about chics but see your VIP badge so dare not! - but I thought we still were in the age of Aquarius and everyone so far has been dissagreeing - where am I going around here?

No, you're right. Pluto just moved into Aquarius a few weeks ago. I'm not an expert but I do know what signs the major planets are transiting.

Sorry Davey, but I don't know what HK is.

I try to be sensitive to everyone, but I think the PC thing has gone too far. I'm gay and I can still laugh at funny stereotypes about my lifestyle. I've always found this particular PC video hilarious!

Right now I'm thinking of Australian comedian Barry Humphreys who died recently at the age of 89. His comedic characters were the very opposite of PC. They were outrageous.

Dame Edna would be well known to Brits and Americans. She started out as Edna Everage, housewife from Mooney Ponds and poked fun at the ways of women. For some it was offensive but most of us laughed at ourselves. Edna was a bit naive and said some very suggestive things by way of double entendres that had the audience in stitches. Totally unPC.

Edna evolved over time to become Dame Edna, Superstar, and Humphreys' wit softened a bit when he quit drinking but was still outrageous. She was much beloved and also hated by many.

IMO PC is found in the eye and ear of the observer. Some see it everywhere, others disagree.

We saw Dame Edna live. Barry Humphries was brilliant! Cancel Culture is even affecting comedians these days, so some of the old jokes would no longer be considered acceptable. Unfortunate.

wot have I achieved today well I have fallen in love with two female SF VIP's well at least I think they are [ are there any male ones by the way?] and a porcupine - not sure which one hurt the most?

@davey said: "well some of the uk comics and commediannes sound very foul mouthed to me but that may just be my wokism coming out?"

We all have the choice of ignoring them. It isn't wokism to take offence at foul language.
It is just a gut reaction.

It took me ages to accept Billy Connolly but I did eventually come to appreciate his sense of humour and I feel I understand him now as a person. I don't think it pays to write a person off completely and forever based on first impressions.

PC, as I see it, is common courtesy gone mad. When you have to 'walk on eggshells' in case you (unintentionally) offend some poor 'snowflake' then that's what PC seems to mean. Say the wrong thing and you risk being 'cancelled' or becoming a social outcast. There ought to be a bit more give and take in the world. People need to chill out. Yeah, well good luck with that, eh? ;)
I get confused because definitions are being changed on me every five minutes! What was wrong with "waitress" or "actress?" I am not being confrontational, I simply don't understand what is wrong with identifying someone by their sex! It is not belittling anyone! The change from fireman to fire fighter, and fisherman to fisher I can understand because it proclaims to the world that both occupations are open to men and women alike! The latest change that has me baffled is calling the homeless "unhoused!" Is there more dignity to the latter?

There are certain topics that are upsetting to some people. It's not that they are looking for something to take offense to, but it's a topic that in general can be upsetting. For some, more so than for others. I.E., physical/mental abuse stories of all types, shocking news or accidents, natural disasters, etc.

Then you have the ones that are just looking for an excuse to be a jerk or worse. In their mind they believe everyone should think, do or act like them without anyone questioning it. This is PC & it's not a good thing. When people go off on others because they're "offended" or can't take a simple joke, then it is them who have the issue. They need to deal with it themselves because the world doesn't revolve around them. They have no excuse, reason or right to take it out on others.

Things as simple as opening up a door or just being polite to others is common courtesy & shows you're being given respect from someone who doesn't even know you. Is it so hard to say thank you for it?

It's sad that acts of kindness & respectfulness are being demonized today.
If they have a personality disorder, then in their minds, the world does revolve around them. I noticed some of this pretty early with the pronoun stuff, the non binary. I've yet to encounter it in the workplace and I'm afraid to. I did encounter it in a thrift store which I posted about here. This individual didn't address me but was very rude to the elderly volunteers who run a long established and very liked local thrift store. Reminded me of my own mother who made scenes over her accent.

Common courtesy is one thing that we should all practice.
Oh, don't get me started on the PC-woke snowflake culture, I have absolutely no time for it.
This really is the thing. There are people dealing with all kinds of real problems. And even if they aren't, they are just living their lives. But some want whatever their woke stuff is to be everyone's priority.

@ Seadoug, HEE! I was unfamiliar with the PC babies until now, what a hoot. I love that just the site of Anderson Cooper calms them down.

radishrose can I butt in for a mo there doesn't seem anyway to send you a pm, or is there - but did you used to run a coffee thread on an early version of this site or have I got it incorrect? ta
you click on the posters' name, and ''start conversation'' but I think you have to be a member for a little while before you can send a PM ...or post photos
