Is it still an issue, wearing Red or Blue in California?

Most Los Angeles residents recommend against wearing red in and around the city and its suburbs.
The colour is widely associated with the Bloods gang, which is responsible for violence, drug dealing, and other major crimes along the west coast.

Although some red clothing shouldn’t make you a target, it’s not a good idea in L.A. This is especially true for tourists who may inadvertently walk into the “wrong neighborhood”. That said, the prevalence of gang colors isn’t as strong as it once was. It’s not as common to hear of mistaken identity attacks due to clothing colour.

If I wore Red in California would I be "Got rid of"

I'm not in California but it's just as bad where I am. I gave away all my red clothes a few years ago but this has gone on a really long time. Red is just a color and I'm not getting any younger. So going forward I think I'd like to make myself happy before I die and wearing red could be part of that which I hope nobody kills me for. What do you think? It's a fun elegant color and I do miss it after going without red for several years.

Don't believe all that you hear or read. Seriously.

Edit: OK, look at this: If you are a young black person that in fact lives or frequents an area in So. Calif. known to have active street drug gang activity, then you would be well advised to avoid wearing red or blue bandanas or sports jackets. That's a fair and accurate statement.

If you're a white person dressed like they just finished shopping at The Gap:

...you probably won't be a target, and you probably will be far away from the Crips & Bloods turf as well.

Use your street smarts and don which ever colour you fancy.
Do not let anyone dictate how you live.
There is no chance of you wandering the back streets of suspect neighbourhoods?

It's summer, and it's hot -- wear WHITE and be practical ...

Every big city in the USA has neighborhoods that are dangerous! Elderly people, dressed in any color are best served by staying out of these neighborhoods, especially at night. You will be at risk of being mugged and robbed at the very least...wearing gang colors would only increase the odds of being attacked.

This is city survival 101.

No, I'm never in a bad neighborhood voluntarily but am aware of how violence can spill over when people get seriously riled.

All too real Holly. Numerous people have told me this.
Most certainly would not go wandering alone at night in these place.
That is the reality of America today.

I genuinely find this kind of stuff amazing. Almost like watching people talk from a parallel universe.

But saying that, I remember being in London with someone from the US. We were walking together and heading towards Leicester Square at night at about 11 pm. She couldn't get over how many people there were in the street; she had never seen anything like it. Her eyes darted around as she tried to look at everyone.

A single black man, walked along the same pavement and walked toward us, there were white people walking with him. This American person I was with jumps into the road as the black man walks past us. And I'm left thinking, "What the hell is going on here?!"

Old white people exiting a bank or ATM machine can sometimes be a problem.
I agree. It should never be at night, and be careful during the day. I have a routine: big purse, but money in my pocket and this is done before leaving bank. If I take ATM, I go into bank to hide the $.

Yeah, what was that? Did you ask?

I did, she said she doesn't see this where she comes from. She was from Detroit.

I do remember being driven through a particular suburb of the Detroit area, a suburb where even police are afraid to drive.

Doesn't see what? A black man in a Detroit street? That's unlikely. Most of Detroit is black.

No, overall, don't see this amount of people at night. As for the place she lived, there were no black people there, or at least I never saw them. From what I remember reading when reading about the development of her own suburb, black people weren't allowed to live there. Grosse Pointe.

Ahh. Grosse Pointe. Unofficially not allowed to live there. Hush. A white secret.

If anyone thinks they don't show up in "small town America" I'll assure you it's not true. The Crips & Bloods moved in around 2008... because the semi-small city just two miles from here had activity. They needed somewhere to live. That said, I would have never thought of not wearing red because of that (it's not my color, so I don't anyhow) and I feel extremely safe here because the bad stuff happens in the other town and MY town is awesome and safe.

If some of the other inhabitants are questionable, it doesn't bother me 'cause I don't get in their faces (Or at least I think I don't... I wouldn't even know it but I love my town and the other residents.) 🤷‍♀️
