I live in Oregon and have been to Texas. I have relatives there. I would agree with your assessment. Where in Mexico did you go?

The 1st winter we spent at a small beach community of Puerto Progresso on the Gulf of Mexico. Being there all winter gave us many trips to Merida, Cancun and we even spent time in Campeche.

Another winter was spent on the west coast. We spent time in Puerto Vallarta and found it perfectly touristy and perfectly safe. Then we flew to Guadalajara and spent a part of the winter at Lake Chapala where there are thousands of Americans and Canadians. Many are retired there full time. The Lake Chapala Club is a wonderful place with a huge English library, video rents and a place to meet other expats and "chew the cud." I recall enjoying many nice cold beers at the American Legion. Wish I was there now.

I would not go to California where it seems the crazies rule.

Seems the folks in Texas are smarter than them folks out on the west coast!

@Packerjohn, I bet there are people in both Texas and California that are a whole bunch smarter and have better manners, than some folks from Canada.

I might add that, yes, there are places in Mexico where tourists are "strongly" advised not to go. Many of these places are close to the US border. Apparently, 25 Canadians have died in Mexico since 2016. That's about 4 people every year. A miracle, I think, because 1.9 million Canadians go down there every year.

Hack, in the city where I live, we have had almost 50 violent deaths in 2022. The population is almost 700,000. A little simple math will tell you that you are a lot safer going down to Mexico than walking on the streets of my Canadian city.

Now, talk about that "windy city" of Chicago. About 1,500 folks met their end violently last year. Facts like these makes Mexico seem like a pretty nice place to sit by the ocean and drink beer while those up north are freezing their buts shoveling snow. Adios amigos!

When I was doing all my motorcycle touring, I would loved to have visited Mexico, but the gangs and the crime level was just too intimidating - especially for a woman traveling alone..

I was in Cancun, Mexico City and Juarez. Cancun was nice. Mexico City was too crowded, really over-crowded and Juarez, I went there only because my Grandson was at the Army base in El Paso (Ft. Bliss) and he wanted to take his grandmother and me over to see the place. IMO, it was dirty, smelly and over-crowded.
