Is New York Preparing for Nuclear Attack?

I am going to research how much power Timothy McVeigh used in his bomb when he blew up the Federal building in Oklahoma City. You guys got me started on thinking about nuclear power and now I can’t stop researching.
If you want to research how much "power" it takes to destroy something....check on the potential for disaster the next time the Yellowstone Caldera erupts....if/when that thing blows again, it will make nuclear bombs seem like big firecrackers, and spread so much pollution in the atmosphere that the earth would likely go into another Ice Age.

I doubt if I will be here on earth when it erupts, but hey, we never know. Of course, if I live long enough to see that, I will look like a fossil.

I was just thinking about nuclear energy when I realized that I live about 5 miles as the crow flies from 3-Mile Island. I was at home that day in 1979 when the sirens went off. I thought it was just a test, but if the siren blows longer than 1-minute, it’s supposed to be taken as the real deal. The Governor (Dick Thornburg) had not yet ordered an evacuation, but my wife went into action packing our bags. I thought she was leaving me, so I asked her what she was doing. She told me that if the Governor ordered to evacuate, we needed to be ready. I told her to go ahead because I was in no way leaving here. We talked about it and she decided to stay also.

So, to be clear, I am in no way pretending to be a Nuclear Engineer or Physicist, but there are different levels of a nuclear blast. One blast could destroy a city, one blast could destroy a state. If you want to quickly incinerate cities, states, etc., you may want to consider Thermonuclear or Hydrogen energy as your main source of power. It would depend on how many Kilotons you would want to produce as to which type of energy you would use. As an example; if you used several hundreds of Kilotons that would be equal to somewhere around a few million tons of TNT and while working for DuPont during my few years, I learned about the power of TNT.

Yeah, according to data, it would take a massive, sustained nuclear attack to destroy the planet. The planet would be altered after a "reasonably sized" attack, but scientists and the DoD purportedly have some basic plans in place to contend with the fallout (literally), and help stock and/or fund things like seed vaults, industrial-sized water purifiers, massive sun-shields, etc.

question for ya!
If the fear of a nuclear war is in the minds of man and this fear is sent in thought all over the atmosphere of the world,
if even China is planning destruction from it's "defense" ministers, the "expectancy" of torment and pain;
if this thought and fear permeates throughout the world instead of love, peace, joy, brotherhood; won't this have to
manifest into action?

I don’t think anyone will be needing those things if an all out nuclear war would take place. That’s just my guess.

Quite honestly, I think nuclear weapons are more of an intimidation tool than a real bomb. From what I have read, our early detection defense systems (satellites) are quite unique, in that if a nuclear warhead is heading for the U.S., we do have ways to intercept it. However, if several would be launched, we are limited to intercepting them.

I always thought that only the president could launch a nuclear weapon and in a sense, that is correct, but only after the order to launch is given and then it must follow a chain of I think two others before the launch can happen. This prevents a pissed off president from just going rogue and launching nuclear warheads. If the U.S. would ever reach DEFCON 1, it’s over for all of us. We were at DEFCON 2 during the Cuban Missile Crisis and DEFCON 2 on 9/11/01.

That other stuff you mentioned; love, peace, etc., doesn’t exist between countries that are not our Allie’s.

One of the prepper sites mentioned a relative on the police force that said there was some intel of a dirty bomb possibly being used in NYC. Have to take it with a grain of salt.... still, odd timing that PSA notice
?

In grade school (the 60's), we would all go down to the school bomb shelter for our nuke drills. I was convinced until about age 14 or so that the world was going to end very soon given these regular drills and the TV programming that had so much of a doomsday theme to it. The Twighlight Zone featured a number of doomsday episodes. Even the cartoons like Bullwinkle spoke of the evil Soviets (Boris Badinoff and Natasha). The Cuban Missile Crisis, although I was too young to understand it, had everyone in a panic too.

OK, so while I was in college studying aviation, we did touch on Atomic energy. a nuclear bomb and an Atomic bomb are ‘basically’ one in the same. The difference in the the two bombs is how the atoms are split . One by fusion and one by fission. For me to go any deeper, I would need to fill a page of worthless information that almost no one would care to read. However, if you want to dig into it, I am sure that there is plenty of information on the web.

When I worked for United, my home airport was Washington. From time to time, I would stay in D.C. just as a matter of convenience. To pass the time, I would visit the Smithsonian. This place is huge. There is a Nuclear and Science section in one part of the Institute. I don’t know where you live, but if you really want to explore more about Nuclear Fusion and Fission, that’s the place to start.

In college, I took a double major in engineering; Design Engineering and Aviation Engineering. My first consideration after college was to be an Aerospace Engineer and work for NASA as a Propulsion Engineer, but I learned soon enough that I just wasn’t as smart as I thought I was. When it came to remembering formulas to come up with the needed amounts of propulsion to lift off rockets with boosters to get the shuttle or whatever vehicle is attached into space, Man, I was lost in space myself. I ended up working for DuPont.

I have been to the Smithsonian [years back]. I would luv to go back .... but as you said, that place is huge, and walking through it no longer appeals to me.

It now takes a few days to really see it all and take time at the exhibits.

So,so true ..... I visited Mt St.Helens ..... in 2000 , we dodged a big bullet there.

Maybe not a bad idea in this day and age! Better to be prepared than not. Maybe all the major cities should do the same. If there's a nuclear attack on N.Y., parts of N.J. would definitely be adversely affected. In the article linked below, there is an interactive Nuke map accessible in the paragraph that starts with "To help people understand.." Click on the words "an interactive tool" underlined in blue, to put in your own parameters. I always wondered how a nuclear strike would affect us. Below is the map using NYC.

We were shown one video of one set of 7 of rounds of underground nuclear tests in Nevada. I really couldn't see much after the explosion, but I could almost feel the power of the blast. There was a small mushroom cloud above ground, but not as big as it would have been had the test been above ground. We also watched a video of a Russian test taken by satellite from near the Marshall Islands. The water was steaming hot and it looked like a giant crater had been created in the water. After several hours, I couldn't tell that anything had happened, except the Russian warships stayed in the area to keep any other ships away until radiation levels returned to normal.
No, I never carried any nuclear missiles or bombs onboard my plane.
Nuclear weapons today are only used as a threat, but I would never trust Putin not to use a low grade nuke to scare Ukraine into submission. Anything is possible with this rabid jackal. He's like a mad scientist were anything is possible.
I also agree with Biden not to give Ukraine any of the F-16's that the Air Force is retiring. At least not at this time. Russian has used their MIGs in Ukraine. There are those in the military that think differently, but Biden understands that giving Ukraine such a powerful plane would be taken as an escalation of the war by Putin and that may be the key to draw us into their war. It's really a high risk move. Most U.S. citizens are opposed to intervening in that war. We have too much to lose and very little, if anything to gain because we have very little interests in that country. Of course, those of you that were in Vietnam remember Johnson saying that his reason to escalate the war was to stop the spread of communism in that part of the world. How did that work out?

I watched the news on News Nation and they told the story about New York putting out a PSA (Public (Service Announcement) about what to do in case of a nuclear attack. I had to kind of smile a bit when they said either to stay indoors or get indoors. I don’t know the real reason for doing this, but I am sure it may scare some people. Although I never did it, my mom used to tell me that back in her day, they were taught to get under their desk if they were in school and just like a fire drill, they had nuclear attack drills or whatever they called them.
We did a whole unit on what to do in case of nuclear attack. It included how to take care of pregnant women. I remember thinking that we were too young to do that, and that those pregnant women would be like the rest of us - obliterated. We did not learn how to assist in a birth, which was odd -- I was eager to learn information about that to answer some of my own questions (like where did the baby come out).
