Is the term 'redneck' an offensive term?

If your not born into a redneck family, the learning curve on becoming a redneck is steep.
There was a time I was not a redneck; I was attracted by their language, explanations and folkways.
Their a subculture with many branches.

There are racial bigots within all groups, rednecks are tagged with being racist.
Unfortunately, it appears to be true.
We equate it with ignorance, it's changing, but slowly.

Redneck, like some other "derogatory" terms, is only offensive when it's used in a way that is meant to be offensive. But it can also be used as a term of endearment. It depends on who is using it and toward whom it's being directed and why.

It's pretty much the same with "the N-word". Some black people use the term with their friends or family members because close relationships transcend that sort of thing. People who know each other well and have developed close personal relationships can call each other just about anything as long as it's done in the right spirit.

Tell Mr. FastTrax that the correct form of address when requesting a person to look at something is
'Slap a eyeball on that', not Looky here.
Geezz, yankies

I was about as Redneck as a Yank could get when I bought a RAM. I had hi-rail equipment installed on it last year and it never rode right since. too much weight on the chassis and suspension and when I lost the vision in my left eye while cruising at 60 on the highway and sideswiped a tree that was all she wrote. So now the Stinkster is driving me around in the SUV I gave her. Can you believe she won't even let me drive the SUV I gave her? When I told her that Peter Falk and Sammy Davis Jr. had only one eye and they drove. She said Papa if you actually think those 2 millionaires drove their own cars I got an Escalade at Massey you can buy me. Deal?

IMO; most offended and (offensive, IMO) "PC" (Politically Correct) people need to grow a thicker skin... (remember "sticks and stones...").

"...I could make a redneck joke, but I are one!"

Enjoy!

I see it as a self deprecating term used by southerners to describe themselves and nothing more. I just assumed the red neck came from being out in the field farming all day.

adjective: self-deprecating
  1. modest about or critical of oneself, especially humorously so.
    "self-deprecating jokes"

Nope. Most who use it to describe themselves are proud of it and it isn't limited to Southerners. More rural than South.

Redneck is absolutely derogatory. The difference is, rednecks refuse to fall for that crap and be "hurt" and instead embrace it.
