Is this a culture thing? Using a company name or name of a place or thing to identify

Good morning! I am black and most of my activities are with black people. I work in a place that has all races. White, Hispanic, and from other countries. I hear them saying or using other peoples names to identify where or what they are talking about.
Example: Mike, is playing golf. I look and Mike is sitting down the aisle. Joan is wearing black. I look and Joan is wearing blue. They use our names to discuss what they and their friends are doing or saying. When they use my name I think "No I didn't do that or say that" but now I finally realize that is how they talk and they use third person a lot. It is strange

Never encountered that. In the Navy we all went by our last names because there were too many Bobs, Bills and Johns. Some got nick names like "Jim Dandy, Slim and Stainless."

Huh??

Well, teatime, I am also black, I no longer work but have a long and varied work history, I socialize with all types of people and I am completely baffled by your post.

I'm not sure how race fits in the conversation, but if the OP is referring to how some folks refer to themselves in the third person, then yea, I find that quite strange as well.

Thank you! I don't get it either

Nor do I, Jim.

I am thinking it means something like if I bought something at Wal-Mart. They would refer to me as Wal-Mart instead of teatime. It is a strange way of having a conversation. Saying Wal-Mart allows them not to say your name if they don't know it
