Looking back many decades to women's struggle for equality what do you think of the current portrayal of women as brutal fist fighters beating and killing just like their male counterparts? Women fights in schools and in public are maybe even more numerous than men's. Are they copying what they see in the media? Maybe I was born too soon for it but it isn't something I feel comfortable watching knowing it is done for money and ratings.

I'm old-fashioned like yourself, FM, and nothing is more off-putting to me than seeing a woman fight, professional or otherwise.

Nothing about that sort of thing (in my eyes) reflects womanhood whatsoever, and I feel the same about the male equivalent.

IMO it's just one more classic example of where the world is going, and the speed at which society is swirling down the toilet.

Put me down for not liking fighting of any kind: war, wrestling or boxing. When they have fight scenes in movies, I just fast forward. It's too boring! Ditto for those silly car chases in some movies. Boring! There is nothing like a good intelligent conversation to pick up my interest. If you ask me, "Make love, not war."

The only thing that I disagree with is the thread's title. Believe you me, Americans, you don't have the monopoly on loutish behaviour. To show you an example I went on YouTube. The vicious fight between three women on London's streets was so violent that I had second thoughts about sharing it. Unbelievable.

As for women (or men) fighting, some people have long been willing to do most anything people are willing to pay for, however base that might be. Just as with (other) sports, many, many people prefer to pay other people to participate, while they just sit back and watch.

Pretty sure its not

I imagine there's a few aggressive wimin that have cashed in, however

Nothing wrong with women in professional fighting. Why shouldn't women have the same opportunity to be as stupid as men & damage each others' brains?

Totally agree

I've been in quite a few scraps
Bars, mostly

Happy I can still put two thoughts together

I can't knock boxing, as I was raised in it

....rather early on

But, yeah, it is a brutal sport
Makes no sense

Professional wrestling is stooopid

I grew up in an environment where it was expected that you, a male, would stand up and "beat the crap" out of anyone doing a woeful wrong. Fortunately, this wasn't what girls did as they could have beat the crap out of us since never hitting girls was ingrained. :)

I can't say that I'm a bit surprised, Horseless.

The hatred and lack of respect in this world today is beyond words.

Try Walmart on a Black Friday. Youtube is full of videos of men and women fighting over some cheap no-name TV they would never even pay attention to any other time of the year. Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving when retailers drag out all their junk and mark it as being on sale. It is the stuff that never sold during the rest of the year, but suddenly people simply MUST have it, even at the expense of dignity and civility.

I suppose, like the occasional win in casinos that brings people back hoping for another win, retailers will put something worthwhile amidst all the junk. Usually, when this subject comes up, somebody will jump into the thread and tout some great deal he or she got, but there is a calculated reason for that happening, just as with the occasional win at gambling.

Though I oppose needless, excessive violence, I don't mind seeing women portrayed as being tough and capable of handling themselves physically.

What I do hate, is that they always use these skinny, willowy little fashion model actresses to portray supposedly tough as nails gals (usually cops) who subdue burly men twice their size when in reality, the actresses who play tough gal roles, couldn't handle a typical high school kid in a confrontation.

If Hollywood wants to portray female characters as being tough and capable of taking down bad guys, then stop conforming to the old stereotypes that say every female character must also look like a Playboy centerfold.

Give us real world female characters who are believable in these roles.

I doubt that the Japs had love on their minds when they bombed Pearl in 41. And please explain the love Hitler had for the Jews in Europe.

Our young people are being exposed, more and more, to violence as an accepted form of resolving issues. Movies, video games, TV, etc., etc., all seem to have violence as a core part of the program. People are increasingly being brainwashed into thinking that violence is acceptable. As other social issues continue to increase in future years, I see nothing but an increase in "people vs. people".

"Are they copying what they see in the media?" Hard to say, kind of a chicken vs egg / art imitating life thing. That said, I think media has an enormous influence on young minds.
I don't like MMA fighting, it's pretty obvious to just be gratuitous violence without any sporting merit. I do think that martial arts matches are legitimate, and don't mind seeing female participation.

Personally, I feel very uncomfortable with any kind of fight sport. I don't like the fact that someone could get maimed for life, or possibly lose life, just to provide me with a few minutes of entertainment. But, that's just me. To be honest, I haven't noticed many female prize fighters walking around Walmart. And I don't believe the "world is going to hell" notion. Women have been commiting murder since time began, so a little street fighting isn't going to get in the way. It's probably the same percentage of women, who have always been fighting.

Agree with all you said, Fuzzy.

My sentiment to a T, Nathan.

Anybody who thinks women fighting is something new has forgotten the "skag fights" after school in the 50's and 60's. I'll admit, they were rare at my school, but they did happen occasionally among the rougher element. Two girls going at it over a boy or an insult or something stolen would always draw a crowd......the girls because we were disgusted and the boys because....well...a blouse might get ripped off and they might get to see a brassiere or even a ………...
