Is this a problem? Communist China buying farmland in the United States?

Is this a waste of energy thinking about this?

Almost 200,000 acres of U.S. land, mostly farmland, has been bought up by the Chinese Communist Party.
Some right outside of the Laughlin Air Force base in Texas.
I think this could be a national security issue and a food supply issue in the future.
From what I understand, there are no restrictions to prevent foreign countries to buying up land in America.

Do you think I'm making too much of this? You see, I think we will one day go to war with Communist China.

I don't think so. I was recently talking to an old friend. I asked after his daughter and he said that she's working as an executive admin for a high-ranking Chinese government official and that they're purchasing acres and acres of rural farmland. kinda scary when you actually stop to consider the implications...

East Asians are among (only Ashkenazi Jews have them beat) the most intelligent people in the world. Adding some to our population seems quite alright to me. More than 1/3rd of Microsoft employees are Asian.
You are not seeing this as I am. I see CCP involvement esp. when the wealth of these ladies is relevant. I see this as sinister, as potential spying. It's not like they are emigrating, they're setting up a plant. IMO. Born in the USA and trained in China to one day return.

Do you have a problem with the US buying in other countries?
Do I have a problem with the US buying in other countries? No- Not in the least.

But these people are not buying in the US. They are buying the US. We are giving away our most valuable resource. Our land. Oil, Natural Gas, Wheat and the land to grow it on. Plus we are educating them so they no longer have to buy our goods. They now sell them to us. Do you think the electronics in those billion dollar jets (and your car) are made here? Shoot - We even import steel. It's foolish. This is how wars are lost, and countries fail. We are becoming a subsidiary of China and India. But I can't do anything about it... I'm an old guy.

Carry on.

Sun Tzu:

"Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win.”

"The greatest victory is that which requires no battle.”

"The whole secret lies in confusing the enemy, so that he cannot fathom our real intent.”

"Great results can be achieved with small forces.”

"To know your enemy, you must become your enemy.”

"To win one hundred victories in one hundred battles is not the acme of skill. To subdue the enemy without fighting is the acme of skill.”

This is what I think will happen but not necessarily in our lifetime.

Communist China will become the new economic superpower.
America will bankrupt itself in dishonorable disgrace.
Our Constitution will hang by a thread.

As I said before, individual thoughts from the minds of men
can change what is preset to occur.
and Yes, I HOPE I am wrong!

You may be correct, but from what I have read …
https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/8329147/chinese-migration-scam-pregnant-women-us-anchor-babies-busted/
It seems that the Chinese government is not behind this birth tourism, but rather Chinese operators in the US who charge wealthy pregnant women a huge sum to arrange housing and the US birth, which by the way, is not limited to Chinese pregnant women. The idea being that the children will eventually sponsor their parents immigration. In any event those children won’t be in a position to do this dastardly deed for another 20 years, so I suggest we relax and let a US of the future deal with what may or may not be a problem.

Not at current levels. They are likely testing the waters with modest land purchases, watching if there are political and societal reactions, lest some entity restrict their game. Given the trade imbalance, they have our dollars to do much more.

Just an interesting update to the topic of China buying so much land here in the United States for agriculture and also owning land for wind farms.
This picture shows the places in the USA where China has bought land for agricultural or industrial use. Super-imposed on the map are some of our military and defense installations .
You can see that China has been buying land surrounding some of our military bases, and probably this was done on purpose, not just for agricultural reasons.
I am not in favor of selling American land to any other country, and especially when it potentially endangers our military bases.

In 2015, the Canadian Federal Government passed a new law that prohibits foreign buyers from purchasing housing in Canada. This law applies to any person or corporation that is not Canadian. The law was recently extended for another 2 years into 2025. JimB.

I have a family member who owns farmland in Kansas. They received a petition that is set up for Kansas farmland owners, agreeing they will not sell their land to the Chinese. It also gave information on how to verify a buyer to assure they were not acting as an agent for China. I do not know how this can be enforced, but at least we know there is an effort to voluntarily block these sales.

Due to recent prejudice laws, you need to be extremely careful about who you refuse to sell to. If they have a promising case of you not selling to them because of nationality or race, you can find yourself in a serious lawsuit. It was explained to me very carefully by a 30 year real estate agent. It is expressly forbidden in the real estate contract. I don't like it, but it seems that it is now the law.

Really ? With 50 different US States, what "Law " would you be talking about ? The way to deal with a hostile buyer is to keep refusing their offers and ask for MORE money each time. JimB.

Realtors are a powerful lobby, they no doubt pushed for the law so as not to miss out on "their" commissions...

In the United States, home buyers and mortgage borrowers are protected from discrimination under Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, known as The Fair Housing Act. This legislation prohibits discriminatory actions based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, or the presence of children. For instance, when selling a home, it’s illegal to refuse to sell, make housing unavailable, or offer different purchase terms based on these factors.

You may be able to successfully get around it, but I was told that one needs to be very carefully of any smell of discrimination. Just sayin'

The Fair Housing Act was created back in the 60's because of racial discrimination that was still very prevalent. At least that's my understanding. Not sure when real estate contracts started emphasizing caution because of it.

Happens everyday in every field. But of course we'll pass more legislation. If the laws could prevent anything, and I got a penny every time a law was not followed, I'd have enough money to share it with all members here and make all of us rich.
Just my personal opinion, but I don't regard the law as a bad one, but in some instances, l would agree that sometimes even a good law can result in unintended outcomes. This may be one of them.

Government can always seize the land if necessary. I'm sure it is being watched.
Yes, eminent domain. Why do we need wind farms anyway? Why not plant more trees???
I believe laws don't solve any problem. People working and pulling together solve our problems. :)

I think that too in this case. Although legislation, with powerful corporations fueling their actions, seems almost invincible most of the time. It would be great to see that trend reversed.
