Is your home silent?

My fridge is silent..the only time it makes any kind of humming noise is if it's not stading on a level floor... I also only have silent radio controlled clocks...

However I would love to have a 'son''..in my case daughter.. or some family in the house.. making the noises they used to make...

I was not meant to be a consumer. I had a horrible time making it "in the world". I found a place to live away from the materialism so I got involved. It is very unique, and I expect no one to do as I did. I do love it though. Being a "monastery" we are trained on living in total silence. That is basic to our practice. Silence is not necessarily an exterior phenomena.

We can go silent even when there is noise around us. We do it all the time. We are selective about what we allow ourselves to listen to. That is as it should be. If one chooses silence, so be it. I am not sure one is better than the other. People have different desires and what pleases us varies a great deal. Cool.
 
I live alone so I usually have the tv on to help me be mindful of the passing of time. I dont mind silence but I tend to easily lose track of time.

The late husband snored something awful. Then he got a Cpap machine. But his mask would get loose and he would wonk. Wonk. That noise we make when we put a leaf between our thumbs and blow. So. I used to sleep with the tv on and Ive become used to it.
 
I live in an apartment building that is in the center of the downtown area so rarely as silent as would like. Before I moved here six years ago, I lived in the middle of the state forest and experienced many days of complete silence. In winter when it was snowing, it was my favorite time. Complete silence except for snow falling from tree branches or an occasional bird. Here I have other tenants making noise, trucks backing up to the stores, my refrigerator running, my computer's fan, my pet bunny chewing on wood or munching hay. I appreciate silence and that is why I like to get up before "first light" to have my coffee in the morning.
 
My condo complex is really well built and very quiet. Half of the owners are seniors. The guy below me has a toddler and I never knew it until I met him. He said she runs around being loud and I have never heard her.

He left a note on my door apologizing for having a party that lasted longer than 10 pm and I never heard that either. A few months ago I had a hearing test and my hearing is good. My friends here report that they canā€™t hear their neighbors either.
 
Itā€™s very silent. I live in the center of a metro area of one million, but this house is in a subdivision with large lots and itā€™s rare I hear a neighbor. The only children are in a house at the far end of the street. I used to hear the HVAC running, but this new model has a variable speed motor and usually donā€™t hear it unless I make a large temp change. And, I installed Pella windows years ago which really cut down on outside noise.
 
I got rid of my TV. One reason is because of the noise. I considered the news noise. But yes, I have fans and refrigerators and humidifiers, and things that make noise. I can live with it.

But when I lived in Montana, I had a friend and his family that lived on property that bordered a Wilderness Area. He was too far off the grid to bother with electricity, which is the way they preferred to live. He was an accomplished carpenter and their house was beautiful and spacious, not just a cabin in the woods. I stayed overnight with them on a couple of occasions, and I was amazed at what was close to true silence. When people were not talking, or doing something, there was only one source of sound in the house, a wind up wall clock with a very audible "tick - tock." It was so wonderfully peaceful that I have never felt more envious.

I commented on the quiet, and my friend pointed out that without electricity, the usual sounds in a home, which we become so accustomed to, are what most people consider silence. It was a remarkable experience to be there. They did have a refrigerator, which ran on propane, and that was out on their porch, but not because it made noise, which it did not. He told me why they kept it outside, but I can't remember why now.
 
I like it quiet and I also like music or the Boobtube on. So....both I guess.

ms gamboolgal can't go long w/o the TV on. Although we both like to have music on alot.

And i'm another Tinnitus sufferer here.
We keep fans going all over the house - because we both like to have air moving. But I imagine it helps with the Tinnitus to some degree.

Ha - I remember 20 some odd year ago asking ms gamboolgal if she could hear the sounds. She would get aggravated with me - it wasn't long before we figured out it was the dreaded Tinnitus.

Now I've no pets but as soon as I get up, the same old battery tranny (getting on for 40yrs old now ;)) gets switched on and stays on all day when I'm home, until evening when I put TV or CDs on.

But I do enjoy silence too, especially if I'm concentrating on something.

Sorry, but what is a "tranny"? part of a car? Transe*ual? (I don't get out much anymore..)

With my daughter and new baby living with me, my home is rarely silent. However, I do have quiet time to meditate.

I would love to live intentionally away from people but at this stage I cannot. I live like it here in that I rarely see people, Keep my small cabin type apt neat and clean and do as I please. I am not much of a consumer, so do not have a cell or use credit cards.

I rarely watch tv unless I find bad weather coming, or watch something interesting, like Great Courses on Discovery. I keep busy in the quiet with genealogy and knitting.
