The mass slaughter happened on 7 October. Remember the beheaded babies and people trying to hide in their homes being burned to death in their safe rooms? And the ground invasion... well, they're not going to sit there and make tea and crumpets to serve to the next round of baby killing women raping monsters to break in, are they? What would another choice be?

The only mass slaughter was by Hamas against innocent families in their homes & young people at a gathering in the desert. Very slowly we are learning of how these people died at the hands of terrorists. No one should forget what happened that day. The terrorists who did this, along with those who have supported them, need to answer for what they did.

IMO, what Israel is preparing for is justice for those souls who were murdered & tortured.
 
Israel will use novel “sponge bombs” as it fights through the network of Hamas tunnels under Gaza.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has been testing the chemical bombs, which contain no explosives but are used to seal off gaps or tunnel entrances from which fighters may emerge.

The IDF has not commented on the use of the so-called “sponge bombs”, which create a sudden explosion of foam that rapidly expands and then hardens.

Its soldiers were seen deploying the devices during exercises in 2021. The army has set up a mock tunnel system at the Tze’Elim army base near the border with Gaza.

Troops are likely to face a bloody battle through the tunnels known as the “Gaza Metro” when they launch their expected ground invasion. The network is thought to be hundreds of miles long and dense with traps.

It is where Hamas has taken many of the 200 hostages and where its leaders will hope to survive the coming war.

Israeli soldiers blinded mishandling new “bomb”​

The “sponge bomb” would prevent soldiers being ambushed as they move further into the network, sealing off gaps through which Hamas could attack.

Contained in a plastic container, the specialist devices have a metal partition separating two liquids. Once this barrier is extracted, the compounds mix as the soldier positions the “bomb” or throws it further ahead.

Specialised teams in the IDF’s engineering corps have been grouped into tunnel reconnaissance units and equipped with ground and aerial sensors, ground penetrating radar and special drilling systems to locate tunnels.

They have also been issued with special equipment to see when underground.

Standard issue night vision goggles need an element of ambient light to work effectively, but with all natural light blocked out when moving underground, troops will rely on thermal technology to see in the total darkness.

Novel radios, optimised for working in the extreme conditions experienced underground, have also been developed.

There are potential complications with the underground arsenal, however. The “sponge bomb” - technically a liquid emulsion - is hazardous to work with, and some Israeli soldiers have lost their sight through mishandling the mixture.

The last I saw, more than twice the amount of Palestinians have been killed than Israelis. Innocent people, including little children, are being killed on both sides. Israel says they are targeting Hamas but everyone who died in Gaza was not Hamas. Many, probably most, were normal people going about their daily lives just like you and me.

IMO attacking Palestinian civilians is like killing Joe Blow after Peter Brown terrorized your home. Joe Blow had nothing to do with it. Subsequent attacks did eliminate some Hamas members. I have no problem with Israel (or anyone else for that matter) wiping out Hamas and other extremist groups because what they are doing is terrible. What I have a problem with is punishing innocent people for what Hamas did. Palestinian citizens are without basic necessities like power, water, food and medications. Then there was a delay in getting supplies to them. Death, destruction and horror on both sides. It's heartbreaking and truthfully...scary to see.

This is the most terrible manifestation of inhumanity on all sides.
There are such hard hearts on social media.
I know what happened on 7 October was utterly wrong, utterly terrible. But more killing will result in everyone dead.
Where can this possibly end?

"Hard hearts on social media ". NO, we are sensible practical, and pragmatic realists who don't accept the nonsense put out by the leftist apologists for Hamas. In this situation there is no "middle ground ". You either support Israel fully, or you are a Hamas stooge. JimB.

I'm having trouble understanding why people forget (or purposely overlook) the fact that Israel told "innocent Palestinians" to leave for their own safety... and told them where the safe areas ARE... and dropped pamphlets saying the same.

There seems to be a huge lack of critical thinking skills in today's world. Someone tells me to get out and tells me where it's safe to go, and even indicates a time line, I'm not going to sit there staring at the wall and wait to be killed! But that said, some have not been allowed to leave so doesn't that make their captors mass murderers for their own people, too?

Everyone knows war is hell (General William Tecumseh Sherman) but sitting around holding hands and sharing a sandwich isn't going to happen.

There is always death in war. The difference in Israel and Hamas is that Hamas terrorists sneaked into Israel to brutally rape, kill and kidnap unsuspecting civilians with direct orders to target children.

Following the terror attacks, Israel officially declared war. Deaths of civilians in declared war, while heartbreaking, are expected, especially in this one since Hamas has historically used civilians as human shields for its above ground command centers.

And never forget that the horror you rightly feel at the footage of dead, wounded and grieving civilians in Gaza is an important part of PR against Israel for Hamas. They want people of Gaza to die for that end.

The time to stop this was before it began. Don’t sneak across another countries border to slaughter their babies, rape their women and kidnap their citizens. It’s a little late to mourn the innocent now.

War is hell and that’s why responsible decent countries don’t make sneak attacks on other countries families.

That’s why responsible countries don’t harbor murderous terrorists.

You expect Israel to do nothing and wait for the next terrorist field trip to provide more dead babies, raped women and another music festival slaughter. How many more will they take across their border next time?

It’s not a game where you stop when you reach the number slaughtered by the invaders. The need is to wipe out the nest so the babies still living can live in peace.

And what Kate said. How much warning did Israel get from Hamas?

I meant on BBC News groups that I sometimes read comments on. There is do much hatred on there from both sides.

The Palestinians allow Hamas to operate in Gaza. They are not innocent anymore than the Germans or Japanese of WWII or the Southerners of the Civil War. The only reason radical Islam continues to attack innocents is because we have lost our willingness for decisive victories in war.

Every single death in this conflict is on the heads of Hamas and those who support them.

Both true. The poster I answered listed recent events between Hamas and Israel with the question "What will end this?"

I know that long term, killing there wouldn't end with Israel's destruction. Next would be Christians in the area, women not abiding by the 'dress code', Shia vs Sunni, suspected apostates and on and on.
