It Must Be Said

From the time I was old enough to speak in a moderately coherent fashion, if I had something to say, I said it. If it got me into trouble, I didn't mind. I said my piece and if what I had to say offended anyone, I would apologize for it. But I still said my piece. Now I have something to say so here goes.

Some time shortly after I got here, I was Moderated and had a post deleted because I said the name of an unelected person who is acting like a politician. A few days later, I said something that was also deemed political, and I was Moderated again. Then I saw a thread about magazine covers. So I posted a cover of a Time magazine and because it had a painting of Trump on it, I was banned for a few days. I understand the reasoning behind the no politics rule, but I felt that was a bit of an over reaction.

But this isn't my forum, so I let it go. And then as time went by, I realized that even though what I had on my mind would probably offend Matrix. If it does, I apologize. But I believe it needs to be said.

I have said a thousand times over the years that I was a forum administrator, depending on where you are in the world, you may have a right to free speech, but the owner of a privately owned and operated forum is not required to provide you with a soapbox for you to exercise that right. I have no problem with anyone's forum rules as long as they make sense. But if they don't make sense, I will always say so. And this no politics rule does not make sense. I could see a rule about not having Political arguments, as such a discussion would be bound to have various rule violations. Hate speech, personal attacks, etc. But a complete ban of anything remotely political? That's a bit much.

Looking through the list of the forums here, at least 1/3 of them have subjects that are based on politics and can easily lead into political discussions because of their very nature.

For example, it does not make sense to me to have a forum topic of Current News & Hot Topics, in a time when politics dominates both. With a strict No Politics rule, technically people can't talk about Social Security or Medicare, two topics very important to Seniors, because that would be against the forum rules as the policies of Social Security and Medicare are governed by Congress, thus are political. No discussion about taxes, that's also political. You also couldn't talk about the legalities of being Homeless because that is Political. You couldn't talk about the housing shortage, because that too, is political. I could go on, but I'm already old...

So why are there forums for politically based programs such as Social Security or Medicare if you have a no politics rule? God knows that every election cycle, disabled people and Seniors worry about whether they will lose their Social Security and Medicare benefits. I know I do. My medical bills for a normal year as as high as $60,000 to $80,000. My three month stay in three different hospitals in 2023 cost over $400,000, which Medicare paid for all of it except 20% on the first procedure. I would probably have a heart attack if I got a bill for $400,000.

My suggestion is instead of a complete blanket ban on all things political, in addition to the standard rules on such things as hate speech, personal attacks, etc., you just add "No Arguments of Any kind Allowed, Period" to those standard rules. After all, the following covers so much that the rest of the standard XenForo rules are essentially just saying the same thing.

"Any problem posts/threads will be removed, edited or locked, and the user's account may be terminated without notice."

As a forum Administrator, I always said that I would treat everyone fairly, no favoritism, no bending the rules, and all rules applied equally to everyone, including all of the people I chose as Moderators. I did treat everyone fairly, all across the board, and I let people speak their piece, even if I disagreed with what they said. I never agreed with a policy of "What the Administrator says is final." That is not diplomatic or fair to anyone. So my solution was to take a vote on anything someone wanted if I disagreed with it, and whatever the outcome, I agreed to it.

I would create a poll, with a two week duration, and post a notice about it. Then see how it turned out.

However, as I said before, this isn't my forum. I can't make such a decision. But if this no politics rule stands as it is, I won't come here as much as I did before, if at all. I like this community and other than the no politics rule and the 130 word maximum for paragraphs (which is too small), I like it here. But I don't like it so much as to forget about my principles.

In the meantime, if anyone wants to talk to me, send me a PM. Assuming the notification thing works as advertised, I'll reply in kind. Always...

Matrix, if this offends you I am truly sorry. But there's a lot of things I'll do and a lot more that I won't. I hope you understand. If you don't, that's ok. Just ban me and get it over with. No hard feelings...

People get nasty when they talk about politics — thus the "no politics" rule.

If it were up to me, I'd just delete the offensive post but not ban anyone unless they were really nasty and repeatedly insulted people, but it's up to the owner of the site what the policies are.

Note, it's generally the people who can't defend their opinions with facts and logic who get nasty. There's always the "ignore" button for those people.

Politics is not the only subject which brings out the worst in people. Currently, gender and race are touchy subjects. It does mean that a discussion can get very one-sided if people are unwilling to accept that there are varying views on these matters.
Many of us are members of other chat sites and it's intriguing how many have had to close because of dwindling numbers. Judging from my own experiences, the admins tend to have their own opinions and dislike any input from those who think differently. This means that you don't get a balanced discussion, which makes the whole thing pointless.

With all due respect when you say you won't come here as often.. and that you've said over the years a thousand times that you've been previously forum admin..... you've not said it here..or been here more than a few weeks....that's not a critisism, just sayin'

That all said.. I understand your frustration about the no politics rule , and it's the same as all of ours... but I'm not going to address your post because that's between you and the Boss.. but just to remind you, that matrix owns and moderates this forum by himself..he has no moderators.. which tbf in itself can be a good or bad thing

....... bad for him because he takes on all the work and it's a LOT of work .. but good because sometimes as @Lavinia says Moderators can make or break a forum due to their own likes and opinions, and they very often do ....so given that... Moderation is the part of the forum @Matrix dislkes a lot.. he's said it often... ...so if he has to spend an inordinate amount of time in moderation .. then we're likely to lose this foum..and we definitley don't want that...

This "needs to be said" as well.... there is no "ban on all things political"... that's silly and I have a feeling you know better. We talk about all those topics you listed as well as abortion, gun control, immigration, etc. just fine. The rule is about no partisan politics and that's easy to understand the definition. I don't understand where people get so confused on that.

I don't know why you were moderated those first few times because I didn't pay attention... but I *did* see the "magazine cover" post you're talking about. The post was created for "OLDER" magazine covers as the original post #1 stated. For you to post a current cover of a political figure you know has caused controversy kinda looked .... okay, definitely looked... as if you were testing the waters to see if you'd get away with it. Pushing the envelope...

I am deeply interested in politics and read about subjects all day, and occasionally post my thoughts. When I come here, it is refreshing to not hear the partisan divisions we hold against others. That isn't going to happen here. Instead you will find a way to communicate about your divisive issue in a civil way, maybe even with some understanding of all the parties interested. There is a lot to learn about diplomacy by having a "No Politics" rule, especially knowing that it is moderated by an individual. :)

I have been banned a few times, and I probably will be again, unless I become more skillful. :) There is more than one way to build an outhouse. :)

I've been watching the news since I was a baby. My parents were partisan for people and they taught me this. During Vietnam, I was very involved. My husband was very involved in politics and this was passed on to my son. I am very political, it is the essence of my being. The essence.
BUT
It has gotten so ugly. I want to know other aspects of people. My best friend is opposite me politically. We cannot speak politically, I'm afraid I would hate my BFF. Everything else we have in common, Everything. Tis a slippery slope. I have made a promise not to make @Matrix life harder. He has so much work to do here, and he does it alone. I don't want to make his life harder. I love matrix. He has given me a gift of this forum and I don't want to F that up.

Yes, sometimes I am dying to bring up something political. These days are electrified with politics. BUT
Whatever matrix wants is my motto. He has given me a gift of this forum and I don't want to F that up.

This not something that has to be said, it is a rant! A very eloquent, constructive argument, but a rant all the same. When a forum displays it's rules and makes them clear to all that transgression of such rules will be dealt with, disregarding those rules, no matter what your opinion is of them, will be dealt with, and rightly so.

I am a middle of the road conservative and was an elected official for about 12 years from my state. Sensibly, we should be able to look at all political platforms and assess them respecting basically what they are really about. Unfortunately, most people these days tend to either misrepresent what they have read, or been told and pass that along. This can inflame others, and some nasty arguments and fights are abounding as a result.
Now, not everyone studies Political Science nor diplomacy in college, but when it comes to stirring up deep emotions when someone disagrees with your opinion, simply walk away from it.
I try to stay away from this subject along with religion, etc. Live and let live, I respect your right to conduct your life in pursuit of liberty and happiness, as well as freedom of speech.

Please try not to offend others, it isn't nice.

It happens to the best of us. I say get over it, no one noticed, and life went on. Learn what not to post on this particular forum.

Learning to “out smart the horse” is part of the fun here. Stay long enough and you learn peoples political views…but you also learn to like them. I can think of several persons who have suffered the “hand slap” that have come back over and over as valuable and thought provoking contributors. Hang in there and learn the game.

I was once banned from a forum for only suggesting members give their ages. I eventually learned that I was the oldest member. lol Also, an opinion would be given on some issue. Okay. Then I would give mine which when in opposition, I was accused of picking on the opinion starter. It was ridiculous.

It's helpful to learn others opinions/views on whatever subject, but to argue over them if you disagree instead of keeping your cool and peacefully discussing the why you have your different opinion is detriment in many ways.

Like others here I watch the news closely and keep up with politics...what happens in politics affects the well being of our country and the well being of every citizen. with all the extremism going on now people are worried and fearful and want to talk about it, so I understand the OP's post, but it is not allowed here, I agree with Aunt Bea...."I have trouble understanding it too but we are guests here, if we can’t accept it we should move on."

Everyone thinks they are original… they come and they go. ..🥱

Over the years, you are probably the 50th new member to make a post like this.

Out of a handful of senior's forums I have been a member of - this is the only one I stayed with. Some were over-moderated, others were just not particularly interesting.

This forum is well-balanced. Personally, I don't miss the vitriol that comes with politics. There's enough of it on television, and everywhere else.

Like it or not politics are a lightning rod. It has the potential to divide families and even a country, and that's not just referring to the civil war. Sadly, today there are even states that want to spit up because of political differences. It goes deeper than viewpoints to issues people are very passionate and polarized about. Often those on the other side are seen as enemies.

People have a lot of skin in the game (Agendas) with political issues, and will believe, overlook, or swallow just about anything rather than switch teams. There is a banquet of information (True or fake) to support whatever you choose to believe, and it is a very small step from wanting to believe something to actually believing it.

From what I have seen, political discussions most often turn into debates, and debates turn into arguments, and arguments eventually turn into trading insults and rude comments. Personally, I have never seen anyone change their political branding over such an exchange. So what's it going to accomplish other than venting.

In my view, the risk is great and the benefit is almost nil. JMO
