It's interesting to check out other senior forums: It gives one food for thought.

With regard to forums who ask for First and last names ..those names are almost always not the members real names . Mine certainly isn't , I wouldn't dream of using my real first and last name on a forum!!

I don't use my real name on that forum either, Holly, but I think most members know who I am. Some are friends on facebook where there is way too much info about people.

The only other forum I participated in,the AARP website I was member for 5 yrs
They have a current events/political forum, the few times I ck'd it out, there were some really mean spirited, nasty posters there.
I'm glad I left when I did Sue

In bygone days, going back to 1995, I was involved with maybe 5 or 6 message boards over time, mostly with different themes. My first experience was running a sports board, with other local friends that I knew in person. It was very enjoyable for a heck of a long time, but I can't imagine being so involved with it these days. The 'crowd' there is getting younger and younger ..:D .. I'm just a spectator there now.
With a couple of the other boards I belonged, I made some wonderful lifelong friends along the way, some that are on SF.. :love_heart:

You kind of wonder about the flat earth people- the ones, who no matter what proof is offered, they won't change their nonconformist notions. I was wondering about the deliberate misinformation fostered on the net to stoke the flat earthers fires. There's a lot of TV devoted to "Big Foot"- space aliens and conspiracies- all fostering that flat earth ideation. We've all run into a flat earther in forums. There's no conversing with them-they have "faith" in what they believe is true because they believe it. Those other forums, ( I'm sorry, the nuns beat Latin into me, the plural is 'fora'.) offer a home for the flat earthers. There's nothing more radical that a flat earther trying to convert others to their ideology. So in a medium, which does not sensor its content, is that flat earth zeal a good thing or not? Keeping in mind that we are all flat earthers in many of our own cherished beliefs.

Years ago Comcast had a forum and I enjoyed going there. They closed down and a member started their own. I joined and I had a lot of fun and there were many nice people on there, until I went into the Political threads. I was attacked, called names including "Stupid". Even the people who had always been nice to me went crazy. So I am here most of the time because no one here has ever seemed childish. It's a much more comfortable place for me.

I remember the golden rule years ago that everyone seemed to follow. Especially in the workplace........never discuss politics, sex, or religion. Now days it’s the opposite and it has created hostility, anger, and resentment.

Social media has seemed bring out the narcissism to new levels. Now everyone wants to spew their special opinion on everything.

There used to be a wonderful forum called *Prodigy. It included all kinds of age groups and interests. I was active in it for years. For some reason, it closed; I never found out why. But I still miss it.

I just don't have time for more than one.....

I feel most times I fail on being present on this one..

I try but I miss so many things and then I feel bad that I didn't respond the way I should.....

Yea ...I need help.....:distress:

There is also a following by those in the "Hollow Earth'' thought?

Politics and religion has ruined many otherwise great relationships.

This something I can't get a hold of...

Why can't people just discuss what they believe without degrading each other for their own beliefs.

You can learn a lot from discussing..It's when it turns into a battle that it gets ridiculous...

I know you should stand up for your beliefs.. but can't we all stand up without fighting and degrading....

Just back up why you feel the way you feel....respect for one another has been lost somewhere.

Several reasons why some people can't respect others' beliefs:

It threatens their own beliefs & undermines their confidence in them.

It's a form of control - "Do as I do, Think what I think, or else you're stupid."

That...is so right on the button

Some are asking why we just can't openly discuss our differing opinions. It's pretty simple. If you're right, then I'm wrong. And that ain't gonna happen. When you consider that one of the factors in human death statistics is humans killing other humans, sitting down and calmly discussing differing opinions is not the first choice of our species. There was the Great War- oops, WWI, then WWII..........

I find it interesting that we continue to develope better, faster more lethal ways to kill other humans. When it is all said and done the epitaph to be hung on earth may read , ''Best planet at killing other humans.''

Normally, we just basically stayed within our own groups who lived with our own beliefs in what every way beliefs they are. Now with the internet, we are able to discuss, argue, whatever about our differences more than ever. We are aware so much more aware of them. I truly think that learning about the history of human beings and beliefs and why these differences emerged from our backgrounds on this planet may help for us to understand each other better. That is my hope. In the end under our skin, we really are the same.

IMO being right or wrong is not as important as being understood.

I don't care if people agree with me as long as they understand my point of view and accept it as just that my point of view.

The more we can discuss things the more chance we have of gradually forming consensus/compromise.

I decided to look around at other senior forums. I found that many of the folks who are currently in here, are in other forums, many using the same icons/avatars and names they use in here, or their actual names, first and last.

What I found more interesting, though, is that those who were banned, in here, came back, and then left in a huff, are on other forums, spewing the same nonsense they did, in here. The difference is that in those other forums they've found many kindred souls who approve of their drivel.

This, for me, confirms what (I think) we all know about the internet: No matter how whacked out you are, no matter how disgusting your take on things may be, on the internet you will always find others who share your warped ideas, as long as you do a little searching.

With the above in mind, I believe I see the internet for what it is: While it may unite us, in a very broad sense, as we communicate with each other, ultimately it stokes our divisive nature, as a species, as it lets outliers validate their twisted take on life by hearing encouraging words from other outcasts of society. One needs only to watch the nightly news, or click on a news site, online, to see the terrible consequences of that.

Yeah, we all wonder how we'd get along without the internet. Any Luddite leanings I may have, aside, and my use of the internet to communicate for business and non-business reasons bearing witness to its value to me, I actually would like to see the internet go away, although I'm positive that will not happen, until our species either destroys itself in some global conflagration, or a ruling, worldwide government does a serious crackdown. I think the former is more likely, Big Brother notwithstanding. (Yes, I know, one of the main reasons the internet was designed was to prevent a breakdown of communication, for military operations, during an all-out war.)

Obviously, I can easily choose to not be online. I'm not the problem, though, as I see it (LOL!). Most of the above hit me when I saw one of our "alums" on another forum. This guy, I really disliked, when he was in here. He posted dreck, and was banned a few times. On this other forum, though, he's a damn hero. Everything he posts, he gets praised on, including kudos from the moderator of the forum! Man - - -

(Yep, he could say negative things about me, I know. Again, here we have the internet simply shining the spotlight on how different we all are, in many ways, and keeping those differences front and center.)
"Kudoes dfrom the moderator" - doesn't sound like particularly impartial moederating.

IMO there can be no impartial moderating, only trying true to be fair to all and either side of any argument. If you think that's easy, try it on your own.

I take your point. Hoqwwver Kudoing one side hardly seems fair to all sides. Paericularly when we af talking about someone with the "power to ban.
