this is a fact... and it's unlucky to allow a female over the doorstep on the first day of new year...so... at minutes to midnight on New years eve..one of my brothers or one of my uncles would go out the back door, and at precisely when the bells had struck 12 they would knock on the front door with a piece of coal, a glass of whisky and a piece of shortbread or black bun... to bring prosperity into the household for the New year. This tradition is called First footing. The first person over the footstep in the new year!
 

I usually watch The Sydney Fireworks first, that's always a spectacular show... and god love those Sydney folks this new year .. after their recent tragedies..

Then I'll watch the London Fireworks from home at Midnight. I haven't been into central London for the fireworks since I was in my 20's... it 's totally manic, and mostly you're freezing standing waiting for hours for it to start, so I stay home and get the best view from my chair...

I am usually still up and watching TV ... dozing off and on so nothing new for me.

Oh for the good old much younger days in Scotland when we went out to friends houses with our bottles of whatever to share a first drink with them singing Auld Lang Syne at the top of our voices.

@KSav I do enjoy my traditional Twilight Zone marathon but I wish they would do marathons for some of the other shows.
Do you remember Outer Limits, Night gallery, One Step Beyond, Tales From The Darkside, Tales From The Crypt, and Alfred Hitcock Presents.

I will take any excuse to feast. Unfortunately for me feasting has consequences. So I will behaving myself after this until Valentines Day.

@Veronica, yes, I loved all of those shows (although I've never seen One Step Beyond, I don't think). A marathon for those is a great idea.

Feasting has consequences for me, too—specifically, my waistline. I have been generally eating healthy, and exercising, BUT not exercising as much as normal, and I have devoured way too many Reese's Peanut Butter Trees. I, too, will be behaving myself going forward.
 
I'm skipping the New Year's Eve party my building has down in the party room. I've been to a lot of them and usually find them underwhelming.I'll have a much better time watching the excellent TV I'm currently streaming on Netflix and HBO, than I would have forcing myself to stay awake until midnight so I can shout, "Happy New Year!" and join the crowd rushing to the exits by 12:10 so they can finally get to bed.

I found this holiday very exciting when I was about 12. But I guess I've outgrown it.

I ended up getting into my pj's, robe and fuzzy slippers and walking across the street to my friend's house, where we snuggled up on the couch with the dog and the cats and watched a chick-flick and drank margaritas and ate chocolate cake til almost midnight when we watched the ball drop.

Came home, kissed the Spousal Equivalent, who slept through the whole thing and now I'm not sleepy.

I guess I'll go play solitaire for a while. The people behind the woods have finished with their reenactment of the bombing of Dresden and are moving on to the Battle of Britain.
 
What a party! My lady was permitted a few dances, doctor's orders not to overdo it and all that. It was fun watching the others. One thing that did strike me was when I had to go out to the car for something, all the nicotine addicts standing around in the freezing night, and it was bitter cold. They should make 2026 a tobacco free year and keep warm at next year's party.
 
I waited for the countdown on TV then got ready for bed after. No fireworks here. People here take rifles outside and shoot at the sky. One was five minutes early, another was ten minutes late. That was it. Guess the rest were too busy getting high.

You will have my late fathe-in-law turning in his grave. "No try before you buy here," is what he told me when I asked if we could share a hotel room at a dance competition that we were in. It was about saving on costs rather than hanky-panky, but it still did not wash with her dear old Dad. "If you want to sleep with my daughter you will marry her," he told me.
To his and everone else's surprise, that's what we did. She was just 18 and I was 22 and if The Grim Reaper doesn't have our number, then come 2028, we will celebrate our diamond wedding. Sixty years married, what would the nay sayers who said it wouldn't last, have to say now?
 
just an excuse for a knees up and booze up - can't see the point in all the madness? - humans behaving badly!!
