So what do you think of this? Justified? Or not?

An opinion not a resolution to this growing problem.
Not justified. Neither were posing a threat to the home owner. Understand the home owners wanting to stop the theft but was the contents in the packages really worth shooting? My preference would be to try my best to be able to identify them & call the police.

According to the video one was shot in the foot. While excessive IMO that should have been the end of shooting. The one shot in the foot not likely to run away. Why shoot the other one?

I don’t agree with it but I do understand it.

My solution has been to go back to shopping in brick and mortar stores as much as possible.

The frustration will continue to build and bubble over until the porch pirates and other petty criminals perceive the dangers and the penalty to be greater than the potential reward.

He could have shot up in the air...or shot close enough to them to scare them, but not injure them. In fact, if he yelled...I have a gun and will shoot, that would've probably scare them off. If they posed no immediate threat to him, then no it was not justified. I'm curious too as why so many police officers were still present well after the incident. And as the newscaster said, it will be interesting to see the outcome. Hopefully this incident will discourage others from porch pirating.

Exploding packages may be a lawsuit in the works or the pirates come back to even the score as they know where you live. Shooting porch pirates is not the answer. A change in the heart and minds of the thieves needs to take place. Why do people think it is okay to steal or kill?

There's a reason some cultures used to cut off a hand for stealing. Or why modern day gangsters have a death penalty for theft. No one likes a thief. A thief is thief is a CRIMINAL no matter the motivation

A rational idea would be to have a package mailbox of some kind outside your door maybe with a lock and key.
Not saying it's a bad idea... maybe a very good one. I simply don't understand how it could work. You can't bestow a key on every delivery person who may bring packages, nor can I see putting a note somewhere that tells a deliverer where the key is kept. Then too, they'd have to be sure to lock the p-mailbox up every time they left a package.

On one hand, I can understand the homeowner's anger. You're supposed to feel safe in your own home and on your property, but these porch thieves violated that safety. My home was burgled back in the '80s, so I know the feeling. It sucks and it makes you want to take some kind of action.

I can't think of anything for the other hand right now...

I can agree with @Knight and @OneEyedDiva, above. I'm trying to put myself into the shoes of someone who keeps a pistol at home... not very many of us up here do that. But I believe a warning shot or two would be better than knee-jerk shooting of the individual(s).

But if you're a registered gun owner, maybe you could keep one pistol loaded with blanks, secured someplace near your front door?

If, as well, you do feel you could be subject to an actual burglary or home invasion (and might be in mortal danger), you could save your loaded pistol for such an occasion.

I really don’t like the idea of brandishing a gun to scare or intimidate people.

You have no way of knowing what kind of firepower the porch pirate may have.

If you pull out a gun be prepared to shoot to kill otherwise keep it out of sight or at home in a safe place.

Two years ago, I had a package sent via FedEx almost stolen off my porch. I heard the doorbell ring, but couldn’t immediately get to it. Maybe 2 minutes later, I went to the door and opened it and there was a young man grabbing my box, it just so happened I had bought a new holster and was trying it on when I answered the door with a 9mm on my hip.

He saw the pistol and let go of the package and high-tailed it off my porch. I think these pirates must follow the trucks.
