Another RI celebrity makes the news but many aren't happy with him. His tweet was about Sanders comment on China's family leave policy which is far better than ours though China promoted female infant genocide. Woods may have a point and maybe you agree, though utter moron seems a bit harsh...
 

The US does not have a paid leave law as so many countries do; thus, it depends upon corporate policy here...

Just another blatant example of how Corporate America has bought our politicians. If Congress voted for mandatory paid family leave we would have it... However, they know that if they do, their campaign funding would be pulled and they would be "Primaried" out of office.

James Wood is the moron IMO.. Using female infanticide has no connection with what Sanders was saying.. It was a strawman argument.

Yes, James is just another stellar example of some famous people (Linc now is) who have some association with RI. Well, at least we still have Debbie Messing, who hasn't messed up yet to my knowledge...
 
Paid leave? Just what does that do for the individual? If this is about paid vacation from the place you are working, that depends on where you work. It is an 'earned' benefit for the working individual, not just some cash benefit from the government just for the benefit of existing.

For me, it depended on where I worked and for how long I worked with the company. I don't remember if any of it came from my union membership or only from the employer. It varied, by employer, from one or two days after 6 months for 1 week after one year to two weeks after two years and 3 weeks after 5 years then 4 weeks after 10 years, reward for being loyal to this employer. Some employers allowed to 'bank' any over two weeks of these reward years to collect in cash when retiring.

This is part of our Republic way of leaving the federal government out of our personal lives as much as possible.
 
'China' never promoted female infant genocide. They promoted/enforced a 'one child per family' policy and the families chose to sacrifice their daughters as boys would be more likely to carry on the family name and care for the aged parents when they could no longer care for themselves.

My thinking is that while a group/individual may have made one bad call, it doesn't preclude them from later on either changing their minds on it or adopting future good ideas. And dismissing the good ones just because they made a bad one is myopic and foolish. Follow the good and ignore the bad seems more practical.

It's been a loooooong time since I had to think about maternity leave but it seems to me that when my first daughter was born, I was entitled to leave employment and get Unemployment benefits for a period of time. I can't remember how long, maybe six or eight months? In my case, my husband stated his business then so I continued to stay home and look after his office paperwork so I didn't have to go looking for a new job.

I would imagine that if a woman or man had a more senior position that in some firms, they'd have been guaranteed being able to return to the same company.

And Bob, paid leave for a new mother means she has the resources to begin mothering (one of the hardest and poorest paid jobs there are, not to mention the horrendous hours!) of that new little citizen who will grow up to support and possible guide and protect the aging population that came before them. She/he has a few months to learn to do the job right, and without concern that the family will starve. That's what paid leave does for the individuals involved.

I believe that many of those items are given as part of your employment. No need for the federal government to be in this business and obviously the more socialized or communistic the countries are the more they insist on controlling our lives. What we earn as rewards are given to all, even those that don't lift a finger to improve the general benefits of the nation get the benefits. Why work and do your best if sitting on the butt gives the same results?

It's a gov website. It's the law. I only worked here 6 years but was entitled to 4 weeks off a year from day one. No matter who you work for. Same generosity with maternity, sick, serious illness. You can even get time off for stress.

And stop using the words socialised and communist as if the terms are interchangeable.
 
Corporations are not about to give employees ANYTHING that might affect their bottom line and hinder more money moving up to the top. It should be mandated.. or it will never happen.. Bob... Is Corporate America paying you to be a shill for them?

They are interchangeable as the path of many socialist groups is to eventually become communist style. Just take time to read definitions of these political groups that are in practice these days, especially in the US, as they do intend to destroy the USA Republic style of government, where people have power, and make it socialist with long term communist goal, where the government has power over the people.

What a stupid comment to make. I speak for the Republic of the USA. That is all. I defend my right to have an opinion, which is allowed in the US by our Constitution.

Republic gives people the ability to vote and get the government to do as they wish. A power over government format by both majority and minority.

Democracy is pretty much the same but the winning group has majority control over the others. Majority sets the goals for the government with no concern to the minority.

Not me that needs a clue at all. Just a couple of locked in thinking ones that see only their way is correct and the rest of us are wrong.
