Tokyo (CNN)The Japanese government has been hit in the pocket by an unusual problem -- its young people aren't drinking enough.

Since the pandemic began, bars and other premises selling alcohol have been hit hard by Covid-19 restrictions, causing sales -- and liquor tax revenues -- to plummet in the world's third-largest economy.

The government's solution? Launch a contest to find new ways to encourage young people to drink more.

The "Sake Viva!" campaign, overseen by the National Tax Agency, invites participants to submit ideas on how to "stimulate demand among young people" for alcohol.

I don't get any ads that promote drinking. I have an ad blocker and use a browser ( Firefox ). What about cell phones. Is promoting alcohol legal in the US? I know we have a huge problem with drunks and the terrible crap that happens . We try to control it, but there is a liquor store on every corner.? I guess they want to be like the great United States...what a mistake.

I was always surprised how the younger Japanese would not even use the vending machines that were darn near everywhere. But, they likely saw their slobbering drunk parents and avoided it. If you ever had the opportunity to be in Japan during Bonenkai and Shinnenkai... you know what I am talking about.

Wow. I didn't know young people had to be encouraged to drink. The government doesn't give a damn about the kids, they're just expendable commodities. So, they're going to sake it to 'em. Oh, boy.

The Japanese should look at the British and see the effect excess drinking has on our society and our reputation!
