Jerry Springer has died aged 79 just months after being diagnosed with cancer, his family revealed on Thursday.

The legendary TV host passed away 'peacefully' at his home in Chicago after his health took a turn for the worse, a spokesman for his relatives said.

Family spokesman Jene Galvin said: 'Jerry's ability to connect with people was at the heart of his success in everything he tried whether that was politics, broadcasting or just joking with people on the street who wanted a photo or a word.

'He's irreplaceable and his loss hurts immensely, but memories of his intellect, heart and humor will live on.'

Jerry hosted the smash hit 'The Jerry Springer Show' for 27 years, becoming America's guilty pleasure wild and raucous TV moments.

R.I.P

R.I.P. For some reason his age surprised me... I thought he was in his 80s years ago! He also had a short political stint in the 70s as Mayor of Cincinnati.

I used to hear Jerry Springer jokes, but I never knew he was a real person. I guess that tells you how much TV I watched over the years.

He was mayor here for a-bit, councilman for a-bit, and even anchored one channel's new for awhile as well. He got into a little trouble with a hooker back in his early days but ... he was so well liked, it just blew over.

I was in a union then, he spoke at one or two of our meetings , and I gotta say , he was a likeable sort. Very funny in his own right.

His show, IMO was horrible ... But may he R.I.P.

I regarded his disturbingly long-lasting show as sewer TV that exhibited and pandered to the worst elements of human nature. On display were people who physically threw themselves at others in brawling, with beefy bouncers present to separate the combatants. The soundtrack had to be heavily bleeped due to expletives freely strewn. I would make haste to change the channel whenever he was on…

As I replied in another thread:
I didn't appreciate the fact that he exploited the intellectually challenged for fame and gain. I banned my husband from watching that nonsense in this house. At least he admitted at one point that he lucked up on getting a highly rated, ridiculous show that exploited people but provided entertainment. His admission, which I saw during the report of his death, made me despise him a little less. I was surprised to see that he was a former politician, but I guess I shouldn't have been.
