John F. Kennedy, Jr. was born into American royalty—and throughout his life, he remained the public's golden son.

The Kennedy boys had at least three things going against them. One, they were born into a highly dysfunctional family. Second, they had too much of their life bought for them. Third, they just weren't the brightest bulbs in life's chandelier. I do understand this may not be a popular response but it is what it is.

JFK has always been my hero. You gotta admire any man who, married to a great woman like Jackie, gets to nail Marilyn Monroe on the side. o_O o_O

The loss of JFK Jr was a tragedy.

Exactly!

I still firmly believe there is a curse on all males in that family.
Let's see: Joe Sr. makes a lot of money, cheats on his wife, lobotomizes his daughter so she doesn't spoil his image and enlists mob help to get his son elected. Joe Jr. opts to pilot an experimental bomber laden with explosives and blows himself up. John, who is the only person in U.S. naval history (that I know of) who manages to get his boat run over by an enemy vessel, botches the Bay of Pigs, nearly starts WWIII and becomes a drug-addled lethario who will get into bed with almost anybody, including a mob girl and a Russian spy. Ted, who liked to drink a lot, manages to run away and hide after leaving a young girl to drown in a car he drove into the water. Robert, like John, doesn't understand the mob and manages to get himself killed too. John Jr. tries to fly a plane he can't handle in weather he's not prepared for and plows into the ocean. The curse would seem to be lack of brains, values and self control.

Read the title.

"John F. Kennedy, Jr. was born into American royalty—and throughout his life, he remained the public's golden son."

This post is about JFK, Jr. and not particularly all of the Kennedy 'boys'. He will remain the golden son ~ in my heart.

My husband went scuba diving with John once in Hawaii while I was working as a graphic designer on a newsletter covering a week long seminar in Honolulu. My husband was free to enjoy the island the whole week while I worked, grrr.

He decided to go scuba diving, just showed up at the dock, and didn't know John was the only other diver going out. And another male passenger...probably security. It was 1975. My husband was a scuba instructor (his own business), so they were probably happy to have him aboard.

Pretty much nailed it.
But these days, most people like good-lookin' people with money. Even better if they're a celebrity. That's all that matters.

The media liked to play up the Kennedy family as royalty because, back then, the combination of good looks, money and position sold their product. The public lapped it up and many still do today. The fact remains though that JFK Jr. was born into a highly dysfunctional family. Given the assassinations and his mother's mental/emotional state and behavior, one can assume the boy didn't have a healthy, normal childhood. Also, the kid seemed to have some difficulty developing an identity of his own. As it turned out, there's not all that much you can say about junior other than we probably never saw the real person and that he died doing something stupid without ever realizing whatever potential he might have had.

btw, one of the issues of "George" is selling on amazon for >$5,000, and some others for $40. Go figure.

Some believe that JFK Jr's death was not an accident because he was planning to run for US Senate and he got in the way of some other folks.

I do not have a high opinion of JFK Jr. To quote from Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_F._Kennedy_Jr.):
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) determined that pilot error was the probable cause of the crash: "Kennedy's failure to maintain control of the airplane during a descent over water at night, which was a result of spatial disorientation."
He did not have the training or ability to be flying under those conditions, he should have known that. I believe his irresponsible actions resulted in the death of two innocent people as well as his own.

Unfortunately a lot of our celebrities are not the people we would like to think they are. Images often do not match reality, Bill Cosby is another good example (discussed in another thread recently). I guess we need heroes and people to admire, and don't seem to mind manufacturing them... Though I prefer the purely mythical kind, only they can do no wrong.

People are so desperate for heroes to worship, they'll take anybody.
