I can't help but think there is more 'political' motivation than usual. Again unless a personal favor for someone this is part of a larger plot. These politicians wouldn't put their job and reputation on the line for this guy unless instructed or bribed-with ALOT. This is the normal course of business in many jurisdictions but the cases are much lower profile.

Referring to what?............the making excuses part?.....I don't, but I believe many / too many do. That is why it continues.
Sometimes it helps to have friends in the right places and Mr. Smollett must have some influential friends. The court should have ordered a mental health assessment. The emotional state of a person who would dream up an alleged hoax like this should not be ingored. Maybe a drug test would be a good idea. The police deserve to be heard because of the investigative work they did to solve the report of a hate crime. It may be a simple case of influence/money to the right place to get the charges dropped, it would not be the first time. It did get a lot of coverage, my first thought when it was reported was oh no, my thought now is wtf was he thinking.
