Kellog CEO Says Cash Strapped Families Should Eat Cereal for Dinner.

Why is lettuce the biggest source of food poisoning? Because it isn't cooked. Why is it so contaminated? That comes from animal factory farming practices.

I find it interesting how the conversation has gone toward what people should eat and not really touched on what a pompous a$$ self-serving statement this executive made and the sentiment it conveys.

I often have a bowl of my oat based cereal for tea…mainly because it avoids having to cook anything.
Only £1.65 a large box too!

Wow. I think this guy seriously miscalculated and could have had a good marketing strategy. How? Well, instead of "eat our expensive cereal for dinner if you're poor"... maybe "Kellogg's realizes that families all over America are struggling with food prices. Effective immediately, we are cutting all of our cereal prices by 30% so that if you choose cereal for your family as a dinner option, it will now be more reachable." People would hear that and think "Oh! Cereal for dinner... now there's a thought!" At least he wouldn't have come across as a totally clueless boob.

Raises hand. I eat it straight out of the box. Sometimes with peanut butter.
Shredded Wheat straight out of the box? You really are a squirrel aren't you, Caramel. ;)

My daily lunch is usually peanut butter on whole wheat and an apple. That used to be a cheap meal but the apple price has sky rocketed.

Does anyone remember that Dr. John Kellogg was an eccentric who believed that most diseases began in the colon, which needed to be “cleansed?” He boasted of beginning each day with an enema… 🙀

IMG_2169.jpegI guess if you begin each day with an enema, you can be fairly certain that nothing worse is likely to happen to you that day. People used to flock to Kellogg’s establishment to get “high colonics.”

Not for this boy, thanks anyways! 😸

I have to read all the labels to make certain I’m buying a high fibre/low sugar/no artificial sweeteners in the cereal for DH. There aren’t many.

Does anyone else like Shredded Wheat. It’s the only one I like. DH insists it tastes like straw, which basically that’s all it is. Eat it with a banana and skim milk.
I hate shredded wheat . I've always said the same as your husband tat it tastes like straw...

..and many doctors today agree with him re the colon.... however it's an Irony then, that the company he founded are now promoting cereal as a super food...when there's barely any fibre in it...

Sometimes I think if Le Big Mac came with an oat bun instead of sesame seeds a lot of people would proclaim it healthful.

Also, does made with oats mean there was a sack of oats on the factory floor next to the production line?

Well, really, what would you think the CEO of cereal company would say? Eat more of my cereal seems about right.
Many moons ago, when I didn't have a pay check, I ate store brand macaroni & cheese for 21 cents a box - for every meal. Years later, I still couldn't stomach the stuff.

And...who EVEN BUYS cereal anymore...
@ what...$5+🙄 a box???
Plenty of people buy cereal, but when budgets are tight (as suggested in the interview), they'll go for store brands at $2-$3/box, not pricey Kellogg's.
She's got several
There's one I'm particularly fond of

Asked her what's in it

'Oats, and this and that'

Her gravies make it much much better
(don't know what's in them, either)

She's got around a 1000 cook books
But, I do know most her vegan stuff comes from this one

Seems it's her vegan bible

Thanks, Gary. I just ordered a copy from my library. Please thank Mrs. O for me!

Boycott Kellog's.

Eat generic oatmeal with raisins and walnuts instead.

Personally I much prefer steel cut oatmeal though the brand doesn’t matter to me. I notice Trader Joe’s sells pre-prepared steel cut oatmeal in the frozen section. We find making enough for several days and just refrigerating it between servings in an airtight container tastes the same as fresh made when microwaved.

We have oatmeal nearly every morning. Does the trick in more ways than one. Haven’t tried making pancakes with the leftovers because I make a large saucepan’s worth about weekly and reheat two bowls full daily from that. We eat a lot of fruit and nuts with it.
I'm glad to see another oatmeal reheater. I find it tastes the same reheated. I thought I might be strange for doing that.

Agreed. WINCO has the bags of cereal. I once heard someone on a talk show (many years ago) that she bought those and then filled the brand name boxes she saved when the kids were not looking and they didn't know the difference.

There are many copycat cereals out there. The more natural brands I buy certainly copycat. They are processed and have sugar, which I'm not adverse to, but they don't have all the funky vitamin additives.

When I saw the headline, I thought the CEO had made an off-the-cuff remark. He didn't. He kept doubling down when confronted. He really thought that cereal for dinner for the financially strapped was making a trend. The only trend he made was showing how CEOs are out of touch.
Yup! This person doesn't get it. Got to wonder about his house(s) boat? vacations? Just let them eat cereal.

There are people who come up from nothing and unless they have some personality disorder, will remember that. Someone like this doesn't know what it's like to pinch a penny.

US Targets and Walmarts sells those in twin packs at prices that come to $4.44/$4.50 (respectively) per box as per their websites. So, prices are similar to what Tesco charges ($4.18/USD). WM store's brand "Toasted O's" are a lot cheaper, as are Aldi's Millville brand "Crispy Oats."

Sometimes I pull together an evening snack of a handful of spoon-size shredded wheat and a handful of mixed nuts. My pantry always has a box of the s.s. shredded wheat (never the big ones) and (store brand) Cheerios. I rarely eat cereal as anything but a quick snack food.

ah that's the reason then.. thanks Star, I did wonder if perhaps the US were selling much larger packs

Very true, Remy. Financial crunches help us learn tricks to trim the bills, and grocery stores are among the easiest places to economize. Like others here, I eat a fair amount of oatmeal. Costco brand rolled oats: $8.99/10 lbs.

This CEO is delusional if he thinks consumers will believe Kellogg's branded cereals for dinner are among the better economical choices, especially when near-identical store branded versions are on the same shelf and half the price.

the problem is that some people ..and there's a lot.. of people who will use any excuse not to cook.. and especially for their children. If they read that a bowl of cornflakes is nutritious then there's gonna be children getting that for not just breakfast
