Kentucky Derby

SeaSparkle, thanks for posting that website. I love the Derby, but since I don't get live TV anymore haven't been able to watch it.

I like to watch the pre-race show to see the trainer and jockey interviews and information on the horses really more than the race it's self.

In going through the horse's bio's, I haven't decided between Palace Malice (24-1), or Verrazano (9-1), I really like Verrazano, good trainer, good jockey. and the horse appears be well conditioned to has a huge stride that could carry him the distance.

It's hard to bet against the trainer and jockey team that Palace Malice has, even if he is quite a long shot right now.

Always put a few bucks on a real long shot, because everyone has a a good day sometimes. My LS pick is Will Take Charge(30-1). He also has a nice long stride, but from the picture he appears to have some recent suture scarring on his left knee. I could just be the picture, but it makes me wonder. Despite the long odds, he has a great trainer, and a decent jockey. D. Wayne Lucas doesn't enter dogs, so this horse could be a sleeper.

It seems like there are a lot of horses with long odds today, so it could be anyone's race.

I didn't see post positions listed, and I usually make my decisions, partially based on that as it's hard for a horse to make up the distance on a far outside position, unless they get a good break in traffic.

Rkunsaw....LOL... you rolled your favorite and long shot into one pick...I like his name, what scares me is no jockey is listed for this horse yet.

Good luck and to all the horses and jockeys, I hope everyone finishes safe and sound, even if not in the money!

TWH and TICA...would like to hear your picks as horse people.

Goldencents, partly because Kevin Krigger is a great rider and is the first black jockey to ride in the Derby in over one hundred years. Seems there ought to be some Karma and good fortune there:eek:nthego:

The other "partly" is because the horse has won four out of six starts and seems to possess a "walk silent carry a big stick" attitude; my favorite kind of attitude:sentimental:

I'm not a fan of what goes on with the treatment of race horses. But, God, I do love watching them run. So beautiful! And the pageantry of the event is fun. So . . . funny you should ask 'cause I was just logging online to see if I'll be able to watch it live on this here 'puter. Of course! It's 2013!! Yea! As for my picks . . . I like to go with the long shot just for fun. I'll pick a name I like and cheer on the front runner. Guess I just love 'em all. This year, there's a woman jockey I'm hoping runs away with it. The first AfricanAmerican guy to ride is another one I'm hoping rides like the wind. Just gonna sit on the edge of my seat for a few seconds and watch the action. As with most sports, I don't follow the names and stats. Just enjoy the competition and excitement. I really enjoy the last walk to the gates and getting them all set . . . THEN . . . run like hell, baby!

I'm with TG. I always feel sorry for racing horses (and Greyhounds), and have heard stories of them being treated poorly also. But they are beautiful animals, and I love to watch them run in more natural settings. Just going by the name, I'm picking Charming Kitten.

WOO! Orb 2:02. That stretch run was somethin'! Rosie came from behind and made a good showing. It looked she might have finished 4th or 5th. Kevin was in the running but fell back toward the end.

And DOWN the stretch they come!!!

Watching it online wasn't too bad. Luckily, there was no freezing buffering right in the middle of the race. Someday, this thing just might take off . . .

I wasn't on this site on the weekend, or I would have joined in!!! I did watch the whole show though, right from the silly hats to the end of the race. I'm quite relieved that there wasn't an accident, the track looked like soup and I held my breath the whole race. Love it when a horse comes from behind...

Was disappointed that Mike Smith used up his horse too fast by leading so far ahead right at the beginning...he was my pick to win. On a sloppy track like that, it's anybody's race.

I'm with you TICA, happy that no accidents occurred on that wet, sloppy track.

Also, I was nicely surprised to find that the whole show and race was live streamed, with very little interruption. I always enjoy Donna Brothers on horseback interviewing the jockey's right on the track. Now, why couldn't I have had a job like that??

No accidents was a good thing.

More silly hats this coming weekend at the Iroquois Steeplechase just outside Nashville, TN. I believe these ladies doll up even more than they do at the Kentucky Derby. And security has really been beefed up since Boston.

It's supposed to rain Saturday, so all that grass is going to be slicker than cat crap.

No Triple Crown Winner again this year... Gary Stevens riding Oxbow, the longshot ran gate to wire in first place and paid $32.80 to win...WOW...what a race! D. Wayne Lucas was the trainer, and this was his 6th Preakness win....Gary Stevens is 50 years young and came out of retirement this year to ride again.

Way to go Gary Stevens and D. Wayne Lucas!
