I have heard that before, of course down here [greaterCincinnati] they're thought of like little pussy-cats. Due to the one born prematurely, ignored by it's mother and raised by the zoo keepers.

This pic is from Botswana...group of hippos not pleased that our little river craft is approaching their turf. Going along the Rufiji River in southern Tanzania, in a flat bottomed boat, the hippos would go underwater at our approach and pop up behind. Someone asked what would we do if one tried to get in the boat...the answer was "Get out".......crocodiles be damned.

Major hippo related deaths though, I believe, happen at night.....they come out of the water to feed...using establish trails if available.....if a person happens to be in the way when they're rushing to get back to the water then......
 
I know Egypt is crock county, and throughout Africa, but those animal channels say hippos cause more deaths. It's an animal I wouldn't want to peeve off.
